And why? I hear and see it a lot. It's not funny or cute.

All American cats are kitties.

They are?

Mine disagree.

See also "kiddo". I see this on Facebook all the time in a certain group I'm in and it rips my knitting.

Someone I know called their son Kiddo. It’s horrendous.

People that say doggo are usually the same people that say hubby, kiddo, holibob, cheeky <insert multiple non cheeky things >.

Eleventy billion times 😆🙄

dontletmedownbruce · 25/10/2025 18:38

A dog became a doggo when it stopped being a doggy. Doggo became more trending / fashionable.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/10/2025 18:41

Cat people started it.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 25/10/2025 18:46

Pedants' Corner has just become a place for moaning about the fact that people differ in the way they speak..

QueenClinomania · 25/10/2025 18:47

Its cute imo.

I also like web puppy for pet spiders.

Life is dull. Anything that chucks a moment of fun in is good as far as im concerned.

Waitingfordoggo · 25/10/2025 19:07

I can’t bear kiddo or doggo. Fine for Australians as they do this to a lot of nouns, but for everyone else, no.

Mustbethat · 25/10/2025 19:08

About the same time poo became poop.

Newdoggo · 25/10/2025 19:09

Awful isn't it? 😂

Gonksmum · 25/10/2025 19:20

Yes, "doggo" is awful but "pupper" is worse!
Another annoyance is the use of "Wowser/s!" which I've heard a lot on the radio recently.

EdithStourton · 25/10/2025 19:29

When did a dog become a doggo?

About the same time that 'dog owner' became 'pawrent'.

SirChenjins · 25/10/2025 19:33

I dunno, I often refer to ddog as doggo, pupple or pup pup - they're just nicknames.

I refer to him as dog at the vets though - that would be a step too farro.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/10/2025 16:43

It's better than furbaby.

now Imagining Gaspode’s response to someone calling him a ‘furbaby’ShockGrin

Gonksmum · 25/10/2025 19:47

@EdithStourton yes, I heard "pet parents" too on radio ads, which is also irritating!

Grin Grin Grin

Would not have gone down well. Like calling Greebo a nice kitty.

excelledyourself · 25/10/2025 20:17

I hate “convo” and “defo”.

IDontHateRainbows · 25/10/2025 20:19

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 25/10/2025 16:33

Probably around the same time as a holiday became 'holibobs' 🙄

The only thing worse than holibobs.. is wellibobs

DoAWheelie · 25/10/2025 20:23

It started in lolcat meme culture back in the late aughts. Back in the nom, fml, I can haz cheeseburger days.

It's dated and overplayed in those circles now since it's been well over 15 years so it's finally breaking through into more mainstream language since that always lags behind.

QueenClinomania · 25/10/2025 23:12

Im just popping back to chuck in the term "danger noodles" just to irritate you more. 🤣
I've been watching pet snake videos on YouTube. So cute.

dontletmedownbruce · 25/10/2025 23:20

Mustbethat · 25/10/2025 19:08

About the same time poo became poop.

Yes! Well spotted.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/10/2025 23:22

I quite like danger noodle for some reason but I can't stand snek, pupper, doggo and furbabies and pawrents.
All the baby talk makes me cringe.

HelenSkeleton · 26/10/2025 00:12

EdithStourton · 25/10/2025 19:29

When did a dog become a doggo?

About the same time that 'dog owner' became 'pawrent'.

And a woman with one or more cats is Meowmy.

Never mind doggo, why the fuck do people type ddog.

It really grates on me. The only reason the whole DH, DD thing started was to make it less to type. Adding it in front of dog just makes it a longer word to type

Oh I agree. Just put dog ffs.

But as to the question- we had a toy dog called Doggo in the 70s , so it goes way back.

Ladamesansmerci · 26/10/2025 00:27

I say doggo because I'm a millennial 🤷 I associate it with the doge meme/good boi type speak, as well as stuff like 'can I haz hamburger plz'.

Just part of my generation's internet culture tbh!

Much negativity in this thread. Much wow.
