And why? I hear and see it a lot. It's not funny or cute.

Is it better or worse than 'pussy'?

Kitty is worse. People snigger at pussy, but "puss" is fine. Kitty sounds like something you say to a three year old.

I dunno.

I think Kitty is lovely! When I was a child our cat was actually called Kitty. TBH it may have been because 'Kitty' as a generic term of address for cats just took over.
This was over 50 years ago and people were much less intense in their relationship with cats than they are now: My mum was probably too hands-off to make a more individual name stick in her brain.

I also use 'pupper' Grin , I think because of my Nana's use of it. But my main affectionate term for my dog is The Mighty Cwtch (a squishing together of The Mighty Boosh and a word from my west country childhood meaning something like 'cuddle')

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 23/11/2025 08:11

What I really dislike is when people refer to their dogs as their 'boys' or their 'girls'.

Periperi2025 · 23/11/2025 08:12

I've never called mine doggo, he's 'pup' or 'puppers' to me and always will be...he's 9 years old.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/11/2025 08:14

Kitty is perfectly nice as a traditional cat name @ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird . Same with Tom as a male cat name. It's just that referring to every cat as a kitty and every dog as a pupper/doggo sounds a bit pre-school to me😬

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 23/11/2025 08:20

Yes, actually, I take your point @CoubousAndTourmaIet that saying "a kitty" sounds like you are talking to a small child! I hadn't really thought of it in that way. For me, it isn't a noun in that sense; it is the actual 'name' of every single cat that I meet, and I will call them Kitty as I beg for affection from them on the pavementGrin

Never mind doggo, why the fuck do people type ddog.

It really grates on me. The only reason the whole DH, DD thing started was to make it less to type. Adding it in front of dog just makes it a longer word to type

I think its a joke . Ddog and Dcat makes me smile.

Pup/Puppy/Pupper for an adult dog is American, Doggo is apparently Australian, so maybe it depends where you're from.

I do this, because the word 'dog' can refer to either canine sex and it doesn't always seem appropriate to say "my bitch" in conversation.
In part it could be because she's huge and people who don't know us will constantly refer to her in the masculine. So she is always "my girl".

Must be a regional thing then, like mom in the midlands...?

I refer to mine as 'not a real boy'!!

I think that might be right. My Nana's use of pupper probably reflects the fact that she was from the west country, just a hop over the Bristol Channel from Wales. We have quite a few Welsh words in our family lexicon (including 'cwtch' that I mentioned above.)

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/11/2025 11:39

Ah, thank you @ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird , I've learned something new and will be less judgmental about pup or pupper in future.

I was asking about the reference to female genitalia as 'kitty'.

I've never come across that. I thought you were asking which was worse in relation to an animal, not just as a slang word.
Both are equally offensive as a term for female genitalia.

Anyone else now thinking of Mrs Slocombe’s pussy…

mamagogo1 · 23/11/2025 22:18

My mid 20’s dd says all these things, I do not - generational thing? Influencers maybe?

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/11/2025 22:22

I think it must be. My cousin's kids do it.
