And why? I hear and see it a lot. It's not funny or cute.

Kind of related subject.
Some people will say that they have a puppy, even if it's a grown-up dog. An adult dog. A dog.
I understand that when you are cuddling with your dog at home, you call it a puppy, a pup, etc.

But then you are going to describe your pet to other people, and you still call your 5 year old dog a "a puppy" or "my puppy". "This is my pup", "I have a puppy at home".
Your dog is 5 years old. It is a dog. It's super cute and adorable. But it's still a dog. Not a puppy.

I say doggo because I'm a millennial 🤷 I associate it with the doge meme/good boi type speak, as well as stuff like 'can I haz hamburger plz'.

Just part of my generation's internet culture tbh!

Much negativity in this thread. Much wow.

Edited

What the absolute hell does much wow mean? It deserves its own Pedants Corner thread!

Look up the doge meme 😂

You just had to be there. Some internet culture won't ever make sense unless you were part of it lol. I don't understand Italian brainrot, which is popular at the moment! But I did grow up with Salad Fingers and Llama with Hats.

Sux2buthen · 26/10/2025 07:25

Hahaha the memories Grin much wow made me smile

ZBFan · 26/10/2025 07:25

It’s just an affectionate term.

EdithStourton · 26/10/2025 07:27

HelenSkeleton · 26/10/2025 00:12

And a woman with one or more cats is Meowmy.

To use another Internet term, FML.

I'm also not keen on 'my boy's sister' when the person means, 'my other dog, who is entirely unrelated to my other dog'.

notacooldad · 26/10/2025 07:31

It’s an internet thing
Its a word thats been around along time. My grandad used to refer to his dogs as the doggos when I was a kid(o)

I call my three that just as a affectionate nickname

Giggorata · 26/10/2025 07:35

I quite like “doggo”. Not “pupper” though.

saraclara · 26/10/2025 07:41

I hate 'my boy' or 'my girl' for pets. I've lost track of the number of thread titles 'my boy died today' where I've thought that someone's child had died.

About the same time poo became poop.

Or pooh. Poor Winnie.

sashh · 26/10/2025 07:55

It's lolspeak.

A dog became a doggo when it stopped being a doggy. Doggo became more trending / fashionable.

Good. Doggo doesn't bother me. Doggy is truly clenchworthy.

Twistedfirestarters · 25/10/2025 16:42

Never mind doggo, why the fuck do people type ddog.

It really grates on me. The only reason the whole DH, DD thing started was to make it less to type. Adding it in front of dog just makes it a longer word to type

Well not really because H is quicker to type than DH. Ddog is still daft though. But I find it quite funny. It's meant to be tongue in cheek I think?

muddyford · 22/11/2025 06:54

About the same time as 'frightening ' became 'scary'.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 22/11/2025 07:28

I loathe doggo, pupper, furbaby. They all seem to be mainly used by people who don't even have a dog. Doggy is okay if it's said to a small child.
It also grates on me the way Americans refer to an adult dog as a puppy and all cats as kitties.

Silverbirchleaf · 22/11/2025 07:32

I never hear people saying Doggo.

Me too. That irritates me. My instragram algorithm has lots of ‘ Teddy meeting his baby sister Lola, for the first time’ and ones a fully grown Great Dane, and the other is a chihuahua.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/11/2025 07:42

I don’t mind doggo.

The worst thing is people pretending their pets refer to them as hoomans.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 22/11/2025 07:43

Silverbirchleaf · 22/11/2025 07:32

I never hear people saying Doggo.

I never did until recently but some of my relatives started using it for my puppy last year and now I'm seeing it a lot elsewhere.

When I collected one of my cats, who was then 15 weeks old, she was living with exactly this! A great dane called Steve and a Chihuahua called Charlie.

Yy to puppy for anything canine, regardless of age.

even worse I’m seeing an increasing trend (or the algorithm is showing me more US stuff) for “kitty” not only being used to refer to any feline, but also female genitalia.

notacooldad · 23/11/2025 00:21

I never hear people saying Doggo
I say it.
The context is 'hey Dh, I'll take the boys out. ( our three dogs) and then say ' right doggos, whose coming with me! ( of course its all three of them and they do a 'pick me routine'!

Crucible · 23/11/2025 00:27

Someone has probably said it however i also detest 'pupper'
It's a puppy.

mathanxiety · 23/11/2025 06:05

Is it better or worse than 'pussy'?
