Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

Joining this thread. I am 53 and a writer. I am in pain daily. Latest on Mumsnet, twice in a day - low and behold. Jesus Christ, in every way.

Mooooo

This afternoon I saw a mini bus with coachwork ‘Pine Martin Grange’ it’s a care home nearby I googled it when I got back, owned by a corporation and not someone called ‘Martin’

does anyone have any thoughts how this could possibly be correct ?

Edited

Pine Martin is actually correct. The pine marten was named after a forester in Assynt, who was known as Pine Martin, to differentiate him from Stone Martin, the mason. Pine Martin was a bit of a wildlife buff and was the first person to realise that the pine martin was a separate species to the weasel. Later the martin was changed to marten to ensure that no-one confused the two (weasel and lumberjack)

QED

I'll get my coat...

@Cathandkin our local chippie is called the ‘Phat Fryer’ but that’s ‘hip-hop’ originated

Probably decorated in a tasteful Farrow & Ball palate of soft plaster pink and grey.

(Seen on a lifestyle article describing a restaurant.)

Currently at another tastefully decorated restaurant, where the menu says we can make a donation to one of their designated charites by buying an invisable dish

Being somewhat of a pedant myself, I still cringe at my lifelong error and misunderstanding about the word Albeit. I always pronounced it as ‘all bite’ and believed it to be a Latin word. I often used it both spoken and written, as well as sometimes also using the phrase ‘all be it’ not realising they were the same. One day only a few years ago I googled the word to double check its etymology and was absolutely floored to discover how wrong I’d been, and still blush at the times I must have mispronounced the word over the past fifty years.

Mind you I do have a track record, as a child I read a book out loud to my older brother - it described a character as the ‘Belle of the ball’ and he still laughs about me describing her as ‘the belly of the ball’.
Being well-read doesn’t always help!

Edited

This and a few other posts have reminded me that I'm the verbal equivalent to all this shocking spelling. As a child I was an avid reader but a very reticent talker, so my vocabulary and spelling is great but I mispronounce many, many things. I seem to have a particular skill at misinterpreting vowels sounds. Some of it is possibly regional - I worked with a Clancy and pronounced her name as Clarncy for ages. There's no r in Dance as they say!

@SomethingUniqueThisTime @LightandBreezy

there is an episode of steptoe and son, I’m really digging into my memory now, but the son wrote a play and it’s hilarious, I seem to remember polo ponies being pronounced ‘polloponees’ and albeit as Al-bait, I could be wrong though and it’s hard to find those old episodes now.

ETA it’s called A Star Is Born

  • Harold has joined an amateur dramatics group who use the Steptoe house as a rehearsal room for their play set in Afghanistan during the days of the Raj. Initially mistrustful of actors Albert changes his mind when given a part in the play but his snide interruptions during Harold's scene with leading lady Nemone, plus his inability to read his lines correctly, get on Harold's nerves. Come the performance however a nervous Harold is a flop whilst his father is the star of the show. Leaving the stage door Harold is asked by a young boy if he is an actor but replies he is a rag and bone man and will never be anything more before throwing a bottle through the dressing room window.—don @ minifie-1

PendantScorner · 13/09/2025 08:50

@Happymover , it's an S&B campaign group for fans of sleeveless dresses.

TerminalMoraine · 13/09/2025 13:49

I read earlier on a different forum….this might not suite you.
it was written twice so not a typo.

Catpiece · 13/09/2025 13:52

I saw earlier “new carpets all frew”. People just write how they speak don’t they x

Some do. My parents and some of the teachers who taught me were strict with grammar, enunciation and pronunciation.
