Well that's a new one on me. I've just found it in the description of an item on a well-known auction site.

@Pedant5corner - excellent! I may have to consider creating this year's nativity in a cool bag :-) We could have Quorn of Copia for the vegans.

@StanfreyPock I may have imagined it, but didn't St Shula also say "Daniel, why is the baby Jesus hidden under your bed?" - or words to that effect.

How do people not know these things?

I ssw 'persay' on a thread yesterday. Why do people use phrases that they have only heard (or read on SM sites)?

They never read, so it never occurs to them that they have heard it wrong.

I blame phonics. Hear a word, write what they think they hurd herd heard.

This is wonderful! Where have you pedants been all of my life?

the absolute best (worst?) thing I’ve read recently is someone being described in a professional report as being made an ‘Escape goat’ in a situation.

I chuckled at the thought of an escaped goat all day!

QuornPlaster · 06/08/2025 23:32

I think you’ll find it’s Quorn of Copia. The lesser known brand.

<gets coat>

But it is an (e)scape goat! ‘Scapegoat’ comes from William Tyndale’s first English Bible, that’s how he translated the Latin ‘goat that was sent out’.

I tried to eat a pie but I choked
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
I eat crumbles when you are not near

upinaballoon · 07/08/2025 19:08

Did the scapegoat carry all the sins of the world? I guess it's Old Testament and I can google. I know a picture of it. I have it in a book.
