Well that's a new one on me. I've just found it in the description of an item on a well-known auction site.

I saw ‘bakerlite’ on a thread today

Pedant5corner · 05/08/2025 21:57

@CalzoneOnLegs , bakerlite for Bakelite is not too bad if you have a non-rhotic accent. It's still wrong.

That's brilliant. I saw "sweet baby cheeses" on here the other day Grin

I'm fairly sure that's a joke.

soupyspoon · 05/08/2025 22:28

Yes I say the sweet baby cheeses at Christmas. Blessed are the cheese makers and all that

I also say devils avocado a lot. So much that the joke is completely flat now

Didnotnailit · 05/08/2025 22:32

Bare instead of bear with me is my current absolute annoyance Corn of copia is quite sweet. But I too didn’t know ir meant horn of plenty. Interesting.

soupyspoon · 05/08/2025 22:35

Whenever I hear cornucopia, it always makes me think of junk shops overflowing with tat. A cornucopia of tat.

I dont know where I got that impression from, that its an excess of this and that.

Omg, I’ve just realised what they meant, lol. I assumed it was a deliberate, maybe local saying, from the poster, lol. My friend just sent me a picture of an attempt at a posh looking chair for sale - it’s a ‘thrown’ apparently… nearly spat out my drink. Especially when someone who clearly didn’t like it remarked it should ‘thrown’ out..

RaininSummer · 05/08/2025 22:42

Love it. A Chester draws filled with corn of Copia.

Love it. A Chester draws filled with corn of Copia.

I would love to set up a shop just for this purpose

To have a range of chester draws, some chairs lounges, a corn of copia of other things, a couple of upholstered throwns, some antique pots to grow potatoe's and tomatoe's in

I would hand paint all the signs myself.

RaininSummer · 05/08/2025 22:50

You have really upset me with the idea of the potatoe's and tomatoe's. Too far. Need to lie down in a dark room now.

ArmySurplusHamster · 05/08/2025 22:51

Pedant5corner · 05/08/2025 11:08

How do people not know these things?

I ssw 'persay' on a thread yesterday. Why do people use phrases that they have only heard (or read on SM sites)?

Point persay at the porcelain.

Pedant5corner · 05/08/2025 23:11

Persay could be a diminutive of Persephone.

Corn of Copia
A very unique soupyspoon of Antique's and Brick-a-brack

Pedant5corner · 05/08/2025 23:26

I could open Pendant's Corner. I'd sell chester's, cheese lounges, walldrobes, footstalls, dinning table, throwns, filling cabinates and stationary items.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/08/2025 23:32

@Pedant5corner Would you stock:
Poof
5 birth caravans with hornings.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 05/08/2025 23:36

I saw a bizarre (in every way) reel on insta yesterday, one of those slightly icky dress-up excuses disguised as a vintage fashion special interest account. The young woman (PollyDolly or something) was describing in great detail the ‘busk’ that she was wearing, and not one of the many commenters seemed aware that the thing was anything but a ‘busk.’ I managed to refrain from being That Person. 😇

Agoddessonamountaintop · 05/08/2025 23:37

@Pedant5corner you could have mannykin wearing a busk.

Pedant5corner · 05/08/2025 23:48

I couldn't decide if it was a puff or a poof.
Where would I put all the birth caravans?

trainedopossum · 05/08/2025 23:48

Borka · 05/08/2025 22:06

I'm fairly sure that's a joke.

Kath and Kim I think, unless they got it from somewhere else.

I say “that’ll learn you” but it’s from Laurel and Hardy and deliberately wrong.

slightlydistrac · 06/08/2025 00:23

Language is an amazing thing. Lots of people on the thread have misread the title and typed 'corn of copia', and others have read their posts and copied their spelling. The spelling I found is what I put in the title. With the extra 'R' in it.

Not that I'm being a pedant or anything...😂

I saw a soot case on marketplace the other day. It amused me.
i sometimes waste too much time on a FB page illiterate Britain and my favourite for a while has been someone whose friend works in a furniture whorehouse.

You will need some pedal stools to display them. If the shop gets to busy, you might need to close for a rest bite 😀

And those old bakerlight phones.
