When (and why) did it start being pronounced mischiev-ee-ous?

OP posts:
GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 22/12/2024 13:45

God knows! But even respectable BBC news presenters do it.

I gave up hope long ago.

Words · 22/12/2024 13:54

The Beeb's younger news presenters mash up their tenses - "I was sat" also.

I recently heard on the world service the 'Aegean Sea' being mispronounced as the 'Egan Sea.'

How are the mighty fallen.

PureBoggin · 22/12/2024 13:55

It is horrible!

MostHighlyFlavoredGravy · 22/12/2024 13:58

Probably said by people who also say "pronounciation" Confused

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 22/12/2024 14:33

I shrug my shoulders at ‘restauranteur’ - except when I hear it on MasterChef. Hmm

Words · 23/12/2024 12:11

And from the same stable:

Chocklit
Spinnidge
Celery-ack
Tumouric
Consume-ay

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 23/12/2024 12:13

The worst offender is Laura Miller on BBC Scotland.

She says SEKKER - TREE.

WinterFoxes · 23/12/2024 12:17

And weather people who say Temchuh. I know 'prch' is a difficult sound but you are tv presenters so make an effort.

upinaballoon · 25/12/2024 12:07

..and those presenters who call a picture a pitcher.

Seymour5 · 09/01/2025 18:06

Aaaargh.

And prostrate. My DH has prostate cancer. One R only. People tell us about others who have had prostrate problems. Were they lying face down and unable to get up? I haven't actually said that, but I want to.

LouisvilleSlugger · 09/01/2025 18:12

Yes, to all of the above.

And my friend pronounces ‘worry’ to rhyme with ‘sorry’. It’s irritated me for decades.

LouisvilleSlugger · 09/01/2025 18:17

I’ve just thought of another - people who pronounce jewellery ’jewlery’ 🤨

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2025 18:20

I had schoolfriends in the 60s who mispronounced 'mischievous' like that. And one who complained of someone else's bad 'pronounciation'.
It's not new.

tailinthejam · 09/01/2025 18:23

My pet hates are 'nucular' on science programmes and 'anenemy' on wildlife ones.

Not to mention HEETH-row airport.

'Nucular' puzzles me. I'm a chemist, I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone who actually works in the field mispronounce it. Possibly because we also use 'nucleus' which isn't liable to being similarly mangled.

I wonder if saying the latter a few times would magically enable people to then say 'nuclear' properly?

DeanElderberry · 10/01/2025 08:12

Every week during the Confiteor I think of my sins, resolve to do better and be less judgemental, and then before the prayer is even over almost everyone, usually including the priest, says 'though my most grieve-ee-ous fault' and I'm back to normal.

So sad.

MyrtleLion · 10/01/2025 18:32

or they say mis-cheev-ee-us rather than mis-che-vus.

GretchenWienersHair · 10/01/2025 18:33

Wait… how else would you pronounce it?

Also Heathrow - what’s the alternative?

beccahamlet · 10/01/2025 18:35

What's wrong with HeethRow? Do you mean the stress should be on the second syllable?

CharlotteSometimes1 · 10/01/2025 18:37

Last night’s episode of the Traitors was painful to watch, with all the talk of being in a click and people being clicky.

CharlotteCChapel · 10/01/2025 18:41

I've always pronounced it that way, I find it too difficult to pronounce mischievous. However I also pronounce owl ow-ul, schoo-ul and ever takes the mickey out of the way I pronounce cupboard.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2025 19:05

Wait… how else would you pronounce it?

Afaik most people pronounce 'worry' as 'wurry' whereas the 'or' in 'sorry' is like in 'orange'.

LouisvilleSlugger · 10/01/2025 19:22

GretchenWienersHair · 10/01/2025 18:33

Wait… how else would you pronounce it?

Correctly, it should rhyme with hurry.

Canyousewcushions · 10/01/2025 20:22

This depends on your accent surely- I think "wurry" may be northern? I've only ever heard it pronounced like that by northerners.
