When (and why) did it start being pronounced mischiev-ee-ous?

God knows! But even respectable BBC news presenters do it.

I gave up hope long ago.

The Beeb's younger news presenters mash up their tenses - "I was sat" also.

I recently heard on the world service the 'Aegean Sea' being mispronounced as the 'Egan Sea.'

How are the mighty fallen.

It is horrible!

Probably said by people who also say "pronounciation"

I shrug my shoulders at ‘restauranteur’ - except when I hear it on MasterChef.

The worst offender is Laura Miller on BBC Scotland.

She says SEKKER - TREE.

And weather people who say Temchuh. I know 'prch' is a difficult sound but you are tv presenters so make an effort.

..and those presenters who call a picture a pitcher.

Aaaargh.

And prostrate. My DH has prostate cancer. One R only. People tell us about others who have had prostrate problems. Were they lying face down and unable to get up? I haven't actually said that, but I want to.

And my friend pronounces ‘worry’ to rhyme with ‘sorry’. It’s irritated me for decades.

I’ve just thought of another - people who pronounce jewellery ’jewlery’ 🤨

I had schoolfriends in the 60s who mispronounced 'mischievous' like that. And one who complained of someone else's bad 'pronounciation'.
It's not new.

My pet hates are 'nucular' on science programmes and 'anenemy' on wildlife ones.

Not to mention HEETH-row airport.

'Nucular' puzzles me. I'm a chemist, I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone who actually works in the field mispronounce it. Possibly because we also use 'nucleus' which isn't liable to being similarly mangled.

I wonder if saying the latter a few times would magically enable people to then say 'nuclear' properly?

Every week during the Confiteor I think of my sins, resolve to do better and be less judgemental, and then before the prayer is even over almost everyone, usually including the priest, says 'though my most grieve-ee-ous fault' and I'm back to normal.

So sad.

Last night’s episode of the Traitors was painful to watch, with all the talk of being in a click and people being clicky.

I've always pronounced it that way, I find it too difficult to pronounce mischievous. However I also pronounce owl ow-ul, schoo-ul and ever takes the mickey out of the way I pronounce cupboard.

Afaik most people pronounce 'worry' as 'wurry' whereas the 'or' in 'sorry' is like in 'orange'.

Correctly, it should rhyme with hurry.

This depends on your accent surely- I think "wurry" may be northern? I've only ever heard it pronounced like that by northerners.
