When (and why) did it start being pronounced mischiev-ee-ous?

I was listening to the radio earlier and a chap rang in to complain about all the woke and pvc (instead of pc) people on the left. It gave me an odd image in my head!

I'll add t'yoomeric and Isree-el.

Why?

How do you even get t'yoomeric from turmeric? And can people not see the individual vowels in Is-ra-el?

My t'yoomeric pronouncer also says c'yoomin for cumin. I use the short oo sound, as in book. But I am from the SE, and his family are from Cheshire. Is it a regional thing to say c'yoomin?

I’m from the South and say c’yewmin. Coomin sounds odd to me. I also say tur-mur-ic. If turmeric were to be spelled tumeric (as some seem to think), I would pronounce it t’yewmeric, not toomeric.

C'yoomin makes phonic sense: split vowel digraph rule. But English often ignores English phonics rules when absorbing non-English words - eg cafe - so coomin is also plausible.

And weather people who say Temchuh. I know 'prch' is a difficult sound but you are tv presenters so make an effort.

‘Prch’ is unnecessarily complicated too - there’s a whole ‘erat’ between the p and the ‘ch’ sound……. If we want to be really pernickety 😄

I think I say both mischievous and mischievious - I remember asking my mum when I was tiny which one it is, so has been a thing for at least a couple of decades!

To me, mischievious sounds much more onomatopoeic, whereas mischievous sounds very pompous and like somebody who would never be mischievious.
