...not draw.

Aaarrrggghhh!

Didn't want to be the arsehole and put it on the thread but I scream inside every time I see it. Feel a bit better now.

I’ll contribute.

On lost words, I particularly like ‘overmorrow’ for the day after tomorrow. A concise, pleasant-sounding, useful word.

Like the German übermorgen.
I love that word too.

Zonder · 03/08/2024 10:26

I'm going to start a thread on lost words now!

I gifted a chest drawers on my local Facebook recently, spelt correctly. Someone then asks if they can have the "draws"! I mean, the correct word was in the title, so surely you can at least get it right!

The other one I see more and more is "been" instead of being. It drives me mad, it means something completely different. I work on a rehab ward, and above the patients bed there is a board which they right what the patient expectations are. One of the nursing staff wrote for the patient " been able to walk"! It totally changes what the patient actually wants

patient's bed, there is a board on which they write

Sorry not sorry, considering context Grin

I am a member of caravan FB pages, don’t judge and the number of people selling 4 / 5 / 6 Birth caravans is outstanding. I yearn to post BERTH but refrain from doing so.

It's a novel, not an actual dictionary, but still worth a read!

So I’ve discovered! And that it’s a “Reese Witherspoon book club pick”.

It does sound very good. I’ll give it a go.

Aloud/allowed is another favourite on FB. Last time I saw someone saying, 'delete if not aloud' I said, 'I can't hear it Hun so I will get it deleted for you'. It caused so much confusion with others on the thread so I assume lots of people struggle allowed/aloud.

Girls Aloud have much to answer for.

Wasn't that supposed to be a play on words?

I believe so.

Years ago, I worked with a person whose letters were almost as though she had just spoken them. So:
Could of
You should of.
What you should of done is
The problem was that the letter and her notes, which were of a similar ilk, could have ended up being read in court by a judge.
The notes were not grammatical at all and consequently I often found it hard to distinguish what she meant. She really had no clue that the spell checker was indicating the mistakes.
Rant over.

I've been looking for a second hand one so my current bugbear is standing lamp instead of standard lamp.

A standing lamp, though, is just another (interchangeable) name for a floor lamp.

This is a listing on Next:
Floor Standing Lamps
Brighten up your home with classic floor lamps. Find modern tripod and floor standing lamps from our collection. Next day delivery & free returns available.
£110 to £220

I really wanted to have a look at those lamps. But the site’s down. (Probably been sabotaged by Pedants’ Corner shock troops.)

A gradual return to work is "phased". Being bothered about something is "fazed".

I’m very aware. Hence my post. I was saying to PP, a phased return to work is correct, but phased is not always correct. She was acting like ‘fazed’ is a made up spelling of ‘phased’.

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2024 12:07

I'm seeing Now spelt as Naw a lot lately. It's driving me batty. And brought instead of bought. I brought it in Tesco. No you fucking didn't! You BOUGHT it in Tesco then you BROUGHT it home!

RaraRachael · 03/08/2024 12:15

I saw someone being accused of writing a review "under a sudonim" yesterday 🤣.

Also an instagrammer "having an epitome"

ChockysChimichanga · 03/08/2024 12:23

People saying or writing ‘3am in the morning’. So annoying.

ChockysChimichanga · 03/08/2024 12:26

This has just reminded me, there’s a poster who always types ‘an’ instead of ‘and’ and it drives me crazy.

This really annoys me. It's in some song too. I can't remember which but whenever I hear it I have to comment out loud.

I don't understand your snark.

This whole thread is ppl discussing things that really bother them, followed by other ppl helpfully explaining why those things are, in some cases, correct.

I was just explaining that standing lamp is an actual thing, not an incorrect use of "standard lamp".

Maybe get out and enjoy some sunshine.

There was no snark. I was being genuine. The site’s down.

The ‘shock troops’ comment was a joke. I am a pedant. That’s why I’m here.

Kioki · 03/08/2024 12:52

Not as bad as when people say "quite" when they mean quiet!

GlobalCitz · 03/08/2024 12:54

"It was a present for John and I"

"John and I's relationship"

Ah very sorry, my bad. My snark detector must be broken.

I literally copied the first link I saw with the word "standing lamp" in it :)

For me it's the word regard.

It's bugs me when people say "in regards to", it's WITH REGARD 🥲
