...not draw.

Aaarrrggghhh!

Didn't want to be the arsehole and put it on the thread but I scream inside every time I see it. Feel a bit better now.

Also fazed instead of phased.

Yes, people mix these two up all the time 🙄.

Agree - I'm Scottish and it's definitely draw-err here. So you see it less. However people here pronounce "definitely" as "deff-in-ATE-ly" which accounts for so many misspellings as defiantly.

Scottish too, definitely drawer and not draw. 😁
I grew up near Glasgow and lots of Glaswegians say de-fin-ET-li. Drive me nuts. 😬

RaraRachael · 03/08/2024 09:59

Where I live, people don't know the difference between roof and ceiling.

My mother would say, "I'm going to get my roof wallpapered"

Wait a minute - people wallpaper their ceilings? 🤔

The definATEly is definitely a west of Scotland thing, I grew up in Edinburgh and don't remember it being said so often on that side of the country.

Flawed and floored also sound very different when I say them.

Zonder · 03/08/2024 10:03

Werweisswohin · 03/08/2024 09:56

Yes, that's wrong.

I know. Took me a few pages to get over it.

ThePoshUns · 03/08/2024 10:03

Except I saw a company ( yes you Eleven Loves) offering a prize drawer of £50 in vouchers in an email yesterday!

It was 'ET' and not 'ATE' among my Glasgow friends

Of course that's meant to say drove and not drive....damnyouautocorrect.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/08/2024 10:06

I hope you are not referring to my use of the word "draw" in my post about Olympic archery, @OP. In that context "draw" is correct.

SudokuMania · 03/08/2024 10:07

I don't mind the Chester in Chester drawers.
If you hadn't seen it written down before it could make sense.
We have Worcestershire sauce, Edinburgh rock, Manchester so why not a style of drawers that originated in Chester?

KnickerlessParsons · 03/08/2024 10:08

I've been looking for a second hand one so my current bugbear is standing lamp instead of standard lamp.

Rummly · 03/08/2024 10:11

RaraRachael · 03/08/2024 09:54

@Rummly

"This athlete is hoping to medal in her event" or "podium in her event"

That’s terrible.

I know language evolves, and I’m all in favour of that. But that’s just lazy and crap language.

Readinstead · 03/08/2024 10:12

Verify being pronounced varify. Two different bloody words with different meanings.

RaraRachael · 03/08/2024 10:13

Agreed - as you say language evolves but there are some things I can't bring myself to say!

@Werweisswohin we live in fairly old houses and all the ceilings have wallpaper on them - not at all odd here

viques · 03/08/2024 10:13

I get annoyed when I see/ hear

“She sang beautiful.”

”He swam amazing.”

I am thinking of setting up a Go Fund Me page to provide a loving home for discarded adverbs, with the hope that one day we will be able to release them back into the world where they belong.

I’ll contribute.

On lost words, I particularly like ‘overmorrow’ for the day after tomorrow. A concise, pleasant-sounding, useful word.

Helloworld56 · 03/08/2024 10:19

It drives me nuts too. I take it as a sign that the majority of people are only half educated. My granddaughter's teacher recently wrote 'thunder and lightening' and wasn't best pleased when a few of the children pointed this out to her.

Have you read the book Dictionary of Lost Words?

No, I didn’t know there was one.

I’m off to Google right now!

Using medal as a verb isn't lazy.

Ceilings tend to be textured or just smooth around here - I'm open to 'you live and learn' though. 😬

It's a novel, not an actual dictionary, but still worth a read!
