Pedants' corner

It's unread not "on read"

I'm seeing this more and more on here and it really irritates me more than it should but here we are. "On read" doesn't even make sense! It's "unread"...this post will probably be unread but at least I've had my tiny rant Grin

I think it is “on read” - when you see two blue ticks it means the other person has read your message - the status is “on read” if they don’t reply then they’ve “left you on read”. I.e. obviously seen your message but not bothered to reply.

DowntonCrabby · 31/07/2024 20:49

I always took “on read” to mean read but not replied rather than actually unread as in they haven’t opened the message.

ToriMJ · 31/07/2024 20:49

Haha, it means they have read it and not replied. Left you on read, not unread Grin

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 20:49

It's really not unread. They've left you on the status 'read your msg but not replied' is what it's saying. Different thing.

Priggishsausagebore · 31/07/2024 20:50

Yes, it's on read because they've read the message but not replied. It's not unread.

BusyCM · 31/07/2024 20:50

No they aren't the same thing at all.

Unread means it hasn't been read.

Left on read means they've read it and failed to reply.

EveryKneeShallBow · 31/07/2024 20:50

Yeah, sorry, I agree. Left on read, although I guess left unread is even worse.

deviantfeline · 31/07/2024 20:50

It is actually meant to be 'on read'. You've sent a message, you can see the person has read it and you are expecting a reply but you get no response. Hence you are 'left on read'

brainexplorer · 31/07/2024 20:50

As everyone else has stated, 'on read' does not mean the same as unread. Quite the opposite.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 31/07/2024 20:51

On read is when someone has read the message but won’t/hasn’t replied. The message status remains on “read”

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 31/07/2024 20:52

What everyone else said!

Georkkardnoir · 31/07/2024 20:53

As others have said, it’s “on read”. Messages can display “read” underneath when the recipient has read it. When they read it and don’t reply, this is being “left on read”, meaning they have ghosted you etc.

TonyeKnausgaard · 31/07/2024 20:54

It's definitely on read. It describes the act of reading someone's message and then 'airing' them i.e. failing to respond.

loudbatperson · 31/07/2024 20:55

Unread and "on read" have different meanings, pretty much opposite of each other.

Although I do hate the phrase "left on read". It's poorly put together and sounds horribly clunky. I don't see what is wrong with a simple "didn't respond"

HotCrossBunplease · 31/07/2024 20:56

OP, you haven’t yet replied. Have you come back to see what answers you got, but then left everyone who has responded on read?

😀

“My message was left as read “ sounds better than “on read” to me.

I hate the phrase too. I'd say they "didn't reply" or "haven't replied"

Rycbar · 31/07/2024 21:08

But it’s not…unread means they haven’t read your message. When people say they’ve let the ‘on read’ it means they’ve opened your message, looked at it (or read it) and then ignored it or not replied.

RainintheDesert · 31/07/2024 21:09

If it was unread the tic jk s would be grey not blue. Being on read is anxiety inducing for some because it could mean being ignored. Kind of like sending a letter to someone and the recipient reads it and simply puts it away without replying. It's an etiquette minefield in the digital era.

RainintheDesert · 31/07/2024 21:09

Sorry for the typos

So do you continue conversations indefinitely?

Otherstories2002 · 31/07/2024 21:22

It literally doesn’t mean that.

unread means it’s delivered but not read.

on read means it’s been delivered and read but the person hasn’t replied.

completely different.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/07/2024 21:32

The poor OP - they’ve probably left the country!

Do come back and tell us whether you’ve left us ‘unread’ or ‘on read’!

MonsteraMama · 31/07/2024 21:33

OP how you going to leave us all on read like this. Come on.
