Pedants' corner

It's unread not "on read"

I'm seeing this more and more on here and it really irritates me more than it should but here we are. "On read" doesn't even make sense! It's "unread"...this post will probably be unread but at least I've had my tiny rant Grin

OP posts:

Unread and on read are two completely different things.

Fullyflavoured · 31/07/2024 21:36

OP has left us all on read.

User364837 · 31/07/2024 21:37

I’m a bit embarrassed for you because you’re actually wrong, as many others have pointed out. Awks!

Cysco · 31/07/2024 21:38

Awkward !

21ZIGGY · 31/07/2024 21:38

🤣 brilliant

Fullyflavoured · 31/07/2024 21:40

MaltipooMama · 31/07/2024 21:42

OP you've left everyone on read 😂

WaitingForMojo · 31/07/2024 21:43

😂

What the others said. ‘On read’ is like ‘on hold’

WaitingForMojo · 31/07/2024 21:43

Can you leave someone on unread?!

taylorswift1989 · 31/07/2024 21:44

Probably!

Bournetilly · 31/07/2024 21:46

Like everyone else said on read means they have read it and not replied. Unread means they haven’t read it.

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 21:52

OP has left the chat

pimmpomm · 31/07/2024 21:53

Eeep awkward!

SardinesOnGingerbread · 31/07/2024 21:53

Embarrassing

Unread and "on read" have different meanings, pretty much opposite of each other.

Although I do hate the phrase "left on read". It's poorly put together and sounds horribly clunky. I don't see what is wrong with a simple "didn't respond"

"Left on read" makes it clear that the second party has seen the message and has chosen not to reply, rather than not replying because they haven't seen the message yet.

"Didn't respond" doesn't convey whether the second party read the message or not.

Because "didn't respond" could be because they haven't read/seen the message yet. "Left on read" provides better information about what has happened.

So do you continue conversations indefinitely?

That's when you just thumbs up their last comment. That's the equivalent of saying "mustn't hold you up, lovely to talk to you, bye".

Not if you don’t use emojis.

Not if you don’t use emojis.

You reply to the message as polite and appropriate.

Really just here to see if OP ever returns. Pedants being wrong is my absolute favourite thing on MN. <chef's kiss>

DontBiteTheCat · 31/07/2024 22:20

It’s definitely “on read”

Message status is “read”. They’ve left you on it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/07/2024 22:20

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 21:52

OP has left the chat

Do you think we're on read or unread?

vanana · 31/07/2024 22:24

One person leaves another "on read" because they have read the message, but not yet replied.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/07/2024 22:27

It might make more sense if you put the inverted commas elsewhere, OP - i.e. to leave someone on 'read'.

OolongTeaDrinker · 31/07/2024 22:28

OP you have completely misunderstood what 'on read' means. A bit embarrassing for you!

BikesIHaveLost · 31/07/2024 22:17

Not if you don’t use emojis.

That's why you have to use them!

People even use them at work in teams chats, I can't imagine but using them at all, they are so useful.
