Mourning the apparent demise of electricity

... but taking some small comfort in the thought of getting a shock from an electric bill.

Anyone else?

OP posts:

I think a more serious loss are the two words no one, which has become one.

Noone is an Irish surname and I cannot read it any other way.

I’m still wondering about the poster, on a thread I saw this morning, who had got off squat free from something or other.

Had a little look at the Facebook page of a favourite dog rescue, only to discover one of their long term residents had been sent to a foster home for some restbite. It’s been an interesting day, Granville.

Pret have a chocolate moose on their menu.

Pret have a chocolate moose on their menu.

That's shocking!

Did they have to chop the antlers off to get it to fit in the pot?

PinkFootstool · 13/10/2023 15:54

Electric is a common regional idiom.

See: most of the South West of England. "Gas and electric".

QuestionableMouse · 13/10/2023 15:55

We say gas and electric in the North East too.

Nothing wrong with it, imo. Language is and should be fluid.

veralo · 13/10/2023 15:56

I can't imagine the size of the pot!

CesareBorgia · 13/10/2023 16:05

I don't mind 'electric' but I dislike 'invite' for 'invitation'. A lone drum I tap quietly rather than bang.

Words · 13/10/2023 16:15

I hate 'invite'.

It's amusing that people - often fairly young people- still refer to the 'gas board' - decades after privatisation.

Others:

Works do ( nearly always plural) but also
Work colleague
Come round to mine
I was stood
I text her yesterday

Oh I tap that drum too. Plus 'party' is not a verb - I shudder when I hear it. Even my 89 year old mum used it!

muddyford · 13/10/2023 16:22

I'm with you, OP. It's used in the Home Counties and East Anglia too. Also fed up with 'ect' for 'etc'.

That is awful. Doesn’t anyone employ people who can proofread any more?

SquirrelFan · 13/10/2023 16:27

I work in a school. The number of children and young staff members who say, 'I need to go toilet,' or even, 'I need go toilet,' astonishes me.

Rabbitcar · 13/10/2023 16:28

My lovely new boss wrote the following today:

Changing tact instead of tack
I’m not adverse to instead of averse to
Rational instead of rationale

I hate myself for noticing. I would never say anything of course.

SquirrelFan · 13/10/2023 16:30

@Rabbitcar I don't hate you for noticing! I'm glad someone does!

Smidge001 · 13/10/2023 16:31

You are not alone.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 13/10/2023 16:34

I dislike the way that books are now authored, rather than written. I hate the way students, or pupils, of tutors are now tutees. I was amused when a fashion expert suggested that one might brighten up a jumper by wearing a broach not a brooch.

Pretty sure this is on purpose - there are antlers on the packaging!

Off topic, but I've just Googled this - £3.90 for a tiny pot of mousse!

DistrictAndCircle · 13/10/2023 16:52

I love this thread. If pedantry was an Olympic sport we’d all medal.

veralo · 13/10/2023 16:52

Oh that explains it then, I haven't seen the packaging just the pot on their website, thanks for the update.

It’s a lovely desert, though.

mumda · 13/10/2023 16:53

Felicity Felicity you fill me with electricity.

Always makes me smile thinking of that line.

It is my job to be a pedant and I love it.

My pet hates at the moment that I keep seeing on my company intranet are trainings and cross-boarder.
