I'm fascinated (and irritated) by the variety of uses for the word "of" that I see on MN (I assume it's also happening elsewhere, but MN is the only social media I use).

In particular, many people seem confused about when to use "by", "to", "from", or "with" and just use "of" as a catch-all substitute. For example, "I was embarrassed of him".

In real life BIL insists that should of is correct. SIL gives me the rage with we’re go to (insert location)

DH isn’t much better are you ready go? when we leave the house 🤦‍♀️

I'd have to divorce my BIL for that one.

I find the opposite. So many people (Americans usually) say woman for women. Like trans woman are woman, or they talk about woman's rights. You hear this a lot in debates on YouTube.

Yes! This YouTuber in particular misuses "woman" in exactly the way you describe. It's physically painful to watch her as my body is poised in cringe mode, just waiting for the inevitable misdemeanor 😭

My lovely boss always types his instead of he’s in her messages.
Makes me cringe but I would never say anything

Cuppa tea! Drives me nuts
Lots love. Rage! Just put in the fucking of!!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/01/2023 22:06

Generally instead of genuinely.

'To which' used in a really odd way. I see it a lot on here. Like 'the dog came in with muddy feet to which I had to clean the carpets before the Pope came for tea'

liveforsummer · 04/01/2023 22:13

Defiantly is auto correct, brought is regional. It's actually pronounced that way in certain parts of the country. It annoyed me too til I realised. I'll give you bare though 😆. I love Chester draws and walldrobe. It's like a whole new take on the real language 🤣.

Ah, yes. Our old friend, bad syntax.

"Generally instead of genuinely."

I noticed a few of the contestants on 'The Traitors' said this. "I generally think you're a great guy, generally mate."

Walnutwhipsarenothesame · 04/01/2023 22:46

Grammar doesn’t seem to be considered important at school anymore. Half the teaching staff don’t use good grammar these days.

Justkeeprollingalong · 04/01/2023 22:51

We have a local tattoo parlour with the following sign:

Piercings and Tattoo's

Not on my body, thank you!

Justkeeprollingalong · 04/01/2023 22:54

And another one,
Tea's and Coffees
Or
Teas and Coffee's

Why? If you're going to get it wrong, at least be consistent!

SaintLoy · 04/01/2023 23:04

It's when its is the right thing.

TheShellBeach · 04/01/2023 23:47

What is worse than tea's and coffee's is "potatoe's"

Makes me want to throw a brick through the window of the shop. Or should that be threw the window?

Per say!

People are always using this expression on here. Makes me so mad.

Probably they were not taught grammar at school themselves.
What a country.
