"Per say"

I've just seen it on here yet again.
It should be 'per se', borrowed from the Latin.

Not per se but ect for et cetera drives me mental

So many people actually say 'ecsetra' as well when saying it out loud.

I know IABU for allowing these things to annoy me, but they do!

TheChippendenSpook · 07/06/2021 10:08

Another one is high rate. It makes me irate just thinking about it.

Zarene · 07/06/2021 10:11

My DM keeps texting me that she's 'On route'. I might have to say something.

Amrapaali · 07/06/2021 10:18

I've always wondered about "impact" as a verb. Have always been taught to say "Have an impact on" not "impacted on". The onlyncorrect usage for "impacted" is when talking about a wisdom tooth.

Has any one else heard this? Or am I some.ancient crone muttering about "back in the day" Grin

Anyway using it as a verb makes my (wisdom!) teeth itch

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 07/06/2021 10:19

On route really annoys me. And persay and some others I can't remember

dementedma · 07/06/2021 10:24

Waiting on, instead of waiting for. Unless you are a waiter/waitress.

Tlollj · 07/06/2021 10:26

On suite I saw the other day.

SpindleWhorl · 07/06/2021 10:28

Why do we say words are 'borrowed from' Latin when they are Latin?

Jocasta2018 · 07/06/2021 10:33

Prostate/prostrate cancer.

An oncologist friend told me he goes along with whichever one the patient uses during their first meeting.
He considers it bad form to correct a newly-diagnosed cancer patient.

Anyone who does that should be made to watch The King and I, on loop Grin

AIMummy · 07/06/2021 10:38

SpindleWhorl different pronunciation from the original language perhaps? I can spot many words in the English language that are words from the Indian subcontinent, however they pronounced differently (pyjama or bungalow for example).

flowery · 07/06/2021 10:40

Excited for something when it should be excited about .

You can be excited for a person, not a thing.

AndeanMountainCat · 07/06/2021 10:49

Zarene

And if she stopped at the pie shop on the way, would that be “on” croûte?

(I expect a kicking for starting a sentence with “and”.)

squishee · 07/06/2021 12:45

@SpindleWhorl

You have a point there, as we can hardly give the word back...

I think that one has been lost. ‘Affect’ has almost gone because everyone says ‘impact’ instead. I think it has happened during my lifetime. Somehow I overlooked the advent of ‘oversight’ as a synonym for supervision, and that ship has sailed as well. It seemed to happen very quickly.
Clymene · 07/06/2021 16:56

It's extraordinarily rude to correct someone else's grammar/pronunciation at the best of times. It is not 'very kind' to stop yourself doing it when you're giving someone a cancer diagnosis.

FawnDrench · 07/06/2021 19:45

"I'll be driving veer the motorway".
That is all.

Self-paste learning. Makes me wince just thinking about it.

Geordieoldgirl · 07/06/2021 20:54

‘Concerning’ used instead of ‘worrying’ or ‘alarming’ grates on me.

TaVeryMuchLove · 07/06/2021 20:55

Visa versa
