I have just discovered this section - I am now officially addicted to MN. I will be on here all the time, day and night. I am a pedant and proud! In fact I might make a badge saying that. I would begin by stating my pet hate - but there are so many I don't know where to start... After a think I it has to be 'could of, should of, would of' Angry

OP posts:

It's not dialect.
In part of this country, people will loan something from you and fetch it back later.
These people went to a shop and brought some things then bought them home.

To feel uncomfortable with regards to Drag

Thread title from this evening.

Are you sending greetings to Drag, OP?

It's "with regard to" you stupid, uneducated moron.

Oh well.

It looks like I have been severely reprimanded for being a pedant.

MikeUniformMike · 20/09/2019 09:12

May I add actual and literally to the hated words list?
I literally am sick of hearing or reading the actual word literally in nearly every actual sentence. It's not the actual word that annoys me but the fact that it literally is overused.
It is creeping into everything. The actual creep of the actual words into literally every actual sentence. The actual word is just making me literally read a pointless actual word that literally adds nothing to the actual sentence.
Aaargh!

friskybivalves · 20/09/2019 09:17

'For free'.

BikeRunSki · 20/09/2019 09:20

I recently saw a notice in a car park advising users that the building adjoining the car park was a “private resident’s”.

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 09:39

BikeRunSki

Was it a large, luxurious building?

What a fortunate resident.

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 09:41

But unpleasant sneering and calling people 'uneducated' and 'moron' is very unedifying and really says more about you than them

It also says a good deal about your apparent lack of humour.

Setting a president?

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 09:52

You need to name and shame the thread, MikeUniformMike - who mentioned setting presidents?

We should be told.

MikeUniformMike · 20/09/2019 09:58

I think I would need councilling.

MikeUniformMike · 20/09/2019 09:59

Like with could of etc, do these people understand the language they speak?

In tact, high rate ...

I could do with some councilling myself this morning.

I have another sleepless night so I frittered away my time spent most of it on MN.

I found too many errors to document here.

I am considering starting a Pedants' Club. Anyone who wishes to be considered for membership should send me a hundred quid.

Go on. You know you want to.

MrsApplepants · 20/09/2019 10:04

Chester draws for sale. A favourite.
Ex boyfriend pronounced ‘perhaps’ as ‘prehaps.’ It irritated me so much.

DadDadDad · 20/09/2019 10:05

It looks like I have been severely reprimanded for being a pedant.

Your pedantry was correcting "with regard to" - I don't think anyone has a problem with that on Pedants' Corner.

Your reprimand was for calling someone a "stupid, uneducated moron" - I can't see the humour in that at all, and it jars with the usual respect shown on this board.

In any case, many of us make mistakes or fall short of using formal English when typing on a forum like this. I don't believe you can infer stupidity or lack of education from one slip (or even a few slips), so I think it's reasonable to ask for a bit more graciousness to other posters.

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 10:09

Bloody hell.

I definitely need councilling now.

MrsFezziwig · 20/09/2019 11:01

councilling

Are we back in the Middle Ages?

BikeRunSki · 20/09/2019 11:03

Grin @TheMustressMhor

It was quite the opposite!

MikeUniformMike · 20/09/2019 11:38

Chester draws is quite a common one. I say drawer as draw-uh and layer as lay-uh, bit some people say drawer as draw and layer as lair.

TheMustressMhor · 20/09/2019 11:43

I had an insane vision of MikeUniformMike making a lair in layers of underwear, for some reason.

DH has dissuaded me from having councilling. He reminded me that the last lot was a sad waste of money, and rolled me a fag instead.
