I have just discovered this section - I am now officially addicted to MN. I will be on here all the time, day and night. I am a pedant and proud! In fact I might make a badge saying that. I would begin by stating my pet hate - but there are so many I don't know where to start... After a think I it has to be 'could of, should of, would of' Angry

LaMarschallin

I accept your exception. Grin

Ohyesiam · 17/09/2019 08:53

I hate sentences with “ hence why” in them.

GBroGal · 17/09/2019 08:55

Or should that be Grocers' Apostrophe?
Or, as Mr. Terry Pratchett once had it: "the Grocer's Apo'strophe".

LaMarschallin · 17/09/2019 08:55

Yet you’ll call the principle if someone is bullying your child

I went to an American school for a couple of years and was taught that a "principal should be a 'pal' ".
Slightly nauseating sentiment, but helpful with spelling.

Ooh! Re: "nauseating" - one of my favourite bits of pedantry is "nauseated" Vs "nauseous".

If someone on whom I'm not keen goes on about how "nauseous' they are, I get awful, childish delight in agreeing strongly with them.

(Just thought: is the "principle" referred to the principle of "Do as I say, not as I do"?
That might work.)

I TRY to think the best of people and assume they have a badly behaved iPhone like mine!

Honest to god, it makes some of my posts look like i have never seen the inside of a classroom!

But non/none lose/loose do drive me a bit batshit!

I have to own up to typing our instead of are - there’s a name for this, but I can’t recall it just now! Basically typing what you hear. I need to work on my diction!

"signal" and "single"

DH does this. If we had a patio he would be buried under it.

AngusThermopyle · 17/09/2019 12:29

His coming round later.

Angry😡

TheMustressMhor · 17/09/2019 12:33

Onto

Onto

Onto

Does not exist in the English language.

iklboo · 17/09/2019 12:34

I hate sentences with “ hence why” in them.

My ex boss used to say 'hence because'.

I keep seeing game adverts saying 'this is so addicting'

TheMustressMhor · 17/09/2019 12:36

"With regards to" and "in regards to" make me angrier even than "onto" does.

Do I win ten pounds?

TheMustressMhor · 17/09/2019 12:37

Incorrect use of the gerund as a noun annoys me enormously.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 16:08

"Eye site"

Topseyt · 17/09/2019 16:29

I'm a fan of Pedants' Corner although I read it more than I post.

All of the examples people have given drive me round the bend. Particularly would of / could of and should of.

It makes people seem determined to butcher the language. Why?

Rachelover60 · 17/09/2019 16:35

Excellent, Ijustwantotretire.

So - I hope you don't get bored of Mumsnet too soon. If so, wouldn't of been much use joining, you should of had a good look before registering.
Hope you have a good BLT.

Love from,
me
Wine hic!

one huge bugbear of mine, which I think is actually taught in schools (would love to hear a teacher contradict me on this) is that 'ize' spellings (eg organize) are American and thus incorrect in British English. Not so!!! Both 'ise' and 'ize' spellings are correct ('ize' being the older version, I believe) whereas in US English, only 'ize' is correct.

Drives me round the twist!!!

MikeUniformMike · 17/09/2019 16:59

Not a written one, but a spoken one, and dictionaries accept the newer pronunciation.

Dissect.
How did that become Die Sect?

DH is dyslexic - he's mellowed me so much. My favourite was when he asked me to look over a job application and he'd put that he works well on his own 'or as part of a grope'.

Shoutymomma · 17/09/2019 17:36

I could care less.☕️

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/09/2019 19:56
