I have just discovered this section - I am now officially addicted to MN. I will be on here all the time, day and night. I am a pedant and proud! In fact I might make a badge saying that. I would begin by stating my pet hate - but there are so many I don't know where to start... After a think I it has to be 'could of, should of, would of' Angry

OP posts:

Welcome, I love coming to read stuff in pedant's corner. It releases some frustration so that I can go back into the real world and continue to ignore the things that are driving me slightly nuts inside. Particularly 'free reign', that's so common now that I'm expecting to become the correct usage in the next decade or so.

I admire your bravery in using TWO exclamation marks in pedant's corner. Grin

I've just found it, too, thanks to a post on another thread.

My life is now complete, my soul, awoken!

I have found my people . . . . . . . . .

Harls1969 · 07/09/2019 09:53

Yes! 'Could of' really grinds my gears. Your and you're? There, their and they're? 🤦

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/09/2019 12:19

"imply" and "infer"

iklboo · 15/09/2019 12:27

Welcome. Pull up a comfy chair and have some cake.

I'll add:

Alot
Abit
Are (instead of our)
Itched instead of scratched

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/09/2019 16:36

"Less" vs "fewer"

The Grocer's Apostrophe in all of its hideous incarnations . . . .

iklboo · 15/09/2019 16:39

Or should that be Grocers' Apostrophe? Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/09/2019 16:39

Ect.
Why?

villainousbroodmare · 15/09/2019 16:40

Rob vs steal. Enormity.

Sorry to say, though, it's Pedants' Corner.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/09/2019 17:27

I noticed that I had made a mistake re pedant’s/pedants’ as soon as I’d pressed post villainousbroodmare, but I didn’t mention it in the hope that nobody else would notice. A rather vain and stupid hope considering the topic I was posting under. 😄

lazylinguist · 15/09/2019 17:30

I find 'ect' really annoying. I think people write it that way because so many pronounce it 'eck - cetera' rather than 'et - cetera', so I guess it seems logical to them that the 'c' comes after the 'e' in the abbreviation.

villainousbroodmare · 15/09/2019 17:32

Grin BlackAmericano

CarrieErbag · 15/09/2019 17:35

May I be so bold as to suggest anyone using a myriad of needs shooting?

"hung" vs "hanged"

All the time on news reports about suicide/ historical programmes etc.*

Pictures are hung. People are hanged.

(Sorry - I know this isn't nice but it grates on me)

I hope this is okay lazy* - I'm always careful to use etc., but sometimes miss the full stop to indicate an abbreviation. Please forgive me.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/09/2019 20:41

Or should that be Grocers' Apostrophe?

I honestly didn't know, Iklboo.

One of the worst instances I've seen of the Grocer's/Grocers' Apostrophe actually said "potatoe's"

I almost cried.

iklboo · 15/09/2019 20:42

A shop near us advertised

Bed's
Sofa's
Mattresse's

I needed a stiff drink after witnessing that.

WombleOwl · 15/09/2019 20:50

I've been known to post SPAG memes on Facebook, but don't correct people directly. People 'like' them, but no one says anything. I suppose I should be grateful that they're aware that I silently judge them Grin

user764329056 · 15/09/2019 20:52

‘Irregardless’ anyone?
And ‘peaked’ my interest instead of ‘piqued’
((Gnashing of teeth))

ALoadOfTwaddle · 15/09/2019 20:59

Accept and except
Specific and Pacific
Incorrectly placed apostrophes and commas

I don’t, and I have Yul Brynner to thank for that! Grin

WombleOwl · 15/09/2019 21:40

There was a thread today were the OP consistently wrote 'que' when she meant 'queue', even after other posters spelled it correctly and one poster mentioned it. Maybe she thought she was right and the others were wrong?

iklboo · 15/09/2019 21:40

I try not to loose my temper. I tow the line and give it free reign off my own back.

Crockof · 15/09/2019 21:46

Overuse of exclamation marks...

missmouse101 · 15/09/2019 21:47

Breath and breathe. Your and you're. Past and passed. They are incredibly straightforward to get right. I can't take much more of seeing them used incorrectly!
