I have just discovered this section - I am now officially addicted to MN. I will be on here all the time, day and night. I am a pedant and proud! In fact I might make a badge saying that. I would begin by stating my pet hate - but there are so many I don't know where to start... After a think I it has to be 'could of, should of, would of' Angry

I've been told off in Pedants' Corner - for being too pedantic!

Oh, so have I. More than once, as it happens.

RaymondStopThat · 02/10/2019 00:40

Another one to add to the list. Just had a survey from MN using the word discrete in place of discreet Angry

PierreBezukov · 02/10/2019 12:27

Upmost instead of utmost.

I'm seeing this all the time! I last saw it on the BBC website and on the Guardian!

MikeUniformMike · 02/10/2019 14:58

Spellchecking has meant less proofreading.
A word that is spelt correctly but not the write rite right word will be overlooked. Smile

No-one picked me up on my use of "affect".

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 02/10/2019 16:45

I find farming terms fascinating. We used to stay in a pub in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and each bedroom was named after something to do with sheep - the Yan Tan Tethera counting system I think but it was a long, long time ago.

A little something for you, @fourquenelles

fourquenelles · 02/10/2019 16:53

@Myimaginarycathasfleas that's a blast from the past. Thank you.

LifeIsGoodish · 02/10/2019 16:57

Oh, I noticed, Myimaginarycat, but I thought Schadenfreude had picked up on it. No need for a pile-on. After all, here in Pedants' Corner we're gentility personified.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2019 19:12

No-one picked me up on my use of "affect".

I did, fleas, I did! I swear I did!

I had a little laugh and warned you the you were playing a dangerous game ! I thought your subtle little joke was excellent!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2019 19:15

I did Life. I did pick up on it.

I did,

To change the subject - whatever happened to Jake Thackerey? I used to have some of his LPs

One minute he was all over the telly - the next he was gone.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 02/10/2019 20:20

I wasn't sure I got it right. I had to check.

MrsFezziwig · 02/10/2019 21:53

whatever happened to Jake Thackerey?

Actually it’s Thackray and he died in 2002.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2019 22:12

Thank you MrsF (and I hope you are grateful that I generously gave you an opportunity to correct me Grin Did it on purpose obviously not because I'm not bright enough to remember his name, or look it up before I posted).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2019 22:13

And I don't know why my strikethrough failed either.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 17:38

Can I just share this? "cheated on". It makes absolutely no sense. I do love our American cousins and some of their linguistic inventions are genius.

But please can they take "cheated on" back. It makes my ears itch.

bookwormsforever · 06/10/2019 21:44

@TheMustressMhor - but what’s wrong with ‘onto’? It’s a perfectly valid word and has been in use since the 18th century - www.lexico.com/en/definition/onto

TheMustressMhor · 09/10/2019 08:42

@bookwormsforever

Oh, I just prefer to see "on to" as I am old and was taught that "on to" was correct.

Most books have the form "on to" - other than American ones, of course.

It doesn't enrage me as "with regards to" does.

That really pisses me off.

TheMustressMhor · 09/10/2019 19:50

I've done a lot of research on polyamoroury since finding out, I'm afraid of being called a biggot

Splendid. This has made my night.

EntropyRising · 11/10/2019 15:12

Upmost instead of utmost

Really? I've not seen this.

My current bête noire - massive. Everything is now massive rather than just big. I accept this is not pedantry and probably just plain unreasonable of me, but I really hate it.

A recurring theme - the myself hypercorrection shows no signs of slowing.

A colleague of mine often uses illicit instead of elicit. There's really no polite way to correct an adult's SPAG, so I haven't.

KayakingOnDown · 12/10/2019 22:25

Upmost instead of utmost

Yes, as in 'Boris Johnson says he will do his upmost to get a deal'

I've seen it a few times on mainstream media outlets.

Wombleish · 16/10/2019 12:37

Since when did x become punctuation? There's a poster on a thread I've just clicked on who uses it at the end of every sentence! It's driving me up the wall Shock

Wombleish · 16/10/2019 12:37

I'm this >< far from asking about it Grin

TheMustressMhor · 18/10/2019 14:45

Ask, Wombleish.

EntropyRising · 18/10/2019 15:35

I always assume these people are idiots, perhaps unkindly.
