I'm sure you've all got your particular teeth-clenching, fingernails-on-blackboard nemesis.

Today's offering: they did "drawring" in Art.

I will break him of that habit. I will!

"I can't be asked is a common phrase in the UK for I can't be bothered."

This quote seems to come from a shop selling t-shirts.

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 21:24

Your 60s example didnt seem to appear on the Mumsnet message thingy. But anyways, what about I SHOULD OF ....... no takers???

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 21:25

You need to click the link Gerty.

fruitbrewhaha · 19/03/2017 21:30

Gerty
"Can't be asked" is a corruption of "can't be arsed"

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Cant%20Be%20Asked

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 21:30

It doesn't mean cannot be directed Ivy!

Pemba · 19/03/2017 21:32

Gerty it's been proved you're wrong about a common phrase. You misheard it, like a lot of people. Hardly the end of the world now is it? - so how about being gracious and open-minded enough to admit it?

Unless you are on a wind-up? Hmmm.....

BTW it's anyway, not anywayS. Unless you are in North America.

moonchild77 · 19/03/2017 21:33

My oh adds a 't' to the word apprentice. He works with a few so will often talk about them. It bugs me every time. I've tried correcting him but to no avail!!

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 21:34

It doesn't mean cannot be directed Ivy!

If you read the article you have taken the quote from that is exactly what it means.
The Centre on Monday told Supreme Court that it cannot be directed to set up the Cauvery Water

MiniMaxi · 19/03/2017 21:36

Phil Spencer says "desizzins" instead of decisions. Could almost do a Location location drinking game with that one Wink

Colleague says "procent" instead of percent

And my personal bugbear, "labtop" instead of laptop. Mostly used by scientist colleagues who spend too much time in labs!

MiniMaxi · 19/03/2017 21:38

Ooh and - this will out me if any former colleagues on here - an old boss says "nweeeonce" instead of nuance. Other old boss says "aww-ree" for awry

Argh!

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 21:44

Got your screenshot - ta ! Yes if you notice it is a quote from someone speaking. That is, it's how they are saying it, not that it is the correct idiom. And Fruit, Urban Dictionary? Of COURSE it says arse, its an URBAN DICTIONARY! Ok I was an English Language (O level) teacher for many a year and I have got bored now. I particularly like pitcher for picture. Or particulary - other pismonunciashun I like!

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 21:47

I know the quote is from someone speaking, however the book was published in 1968 so whether it is 'someone speaking' or not then it proves that it was around before 1990 as you claim.

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 21:50

And Fruit, Urban Dictionary? Of COURSE it says arse, its an URBAN DICTIONARY!

Yet quoting an Indian Newspaper, which is using it in the meaning 'cannot be requested', a random forum and a t-shirt shop is fine is it?

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 21:51

Pemba - do you not understand when I put Anyways its a fudgin joke?!? I am gracious - graciously so fudgin brainy, me brain cells acksherlee hurt me. Yep thats me joking about too! And Ivy that is another sentence with the word "directed" in it! I am totes bored! BUT NOT WITH THIS FAB TOPIC OF PISMONSSS!!!!

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 21:54

Gerty I am going to have to assume that you are being deliberately obtuse here.

I know that is another sentence with the word directed in it. That is because it comes from the article that you quote as using the phrase 'can't be asked' which is not using it to mean 'can't be bothered'.

AirandMungBeans · 19/03/2017 21:54

My (adult) SIL says "supposably" instead of supposedly. It gives me irrational rage!

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 22:14

Obtuse? Annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand? (Oxford Engl Dic) I am neither insensitive nor slow to understand. Or Collins Dict - has difficulty understanding things, or makes no effort to understand them.
I don't have difficulty, nor do I make no effort. I just got bored "of" it!!!! Or is it "with" it?!!!! Mumsnet is good and so is : Supposably, that is a good one AirandMung!!! S T I L L NO TAKERS FOR "SHOULD OF" ????!!

gordonjacob · 19/03/2017 22:21

Ooh, I have some I need to get off my chest! One (very lovely person) I know says 'witherspoons', wait-rose, and does that thing of adding a 's to every supermarket, I went to Tesco's, Lidl's etc. why to people do that? Do we blame J Sainsbury for making it Sainsburys?

Also pin-interest instead of Pinterest!

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 22:23

I am neither insensitive nor slow to understand

You seem to be deliberately failing to understand what I, and others are saying.

Oh and you claimed that 'arsed' isn't a word?
www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/arsed

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 19/03/2017 22:25

Oh, and look what is in the OED under 'arsed'

Pismonunciations that drive you nuts
ozymandiusking · 19/03/2017 22:33

There is such a word as Bronchitis, Goggle it!

DanyellasDonkey · 19/03/2017 22:38

Deteriate and vunerable are often being used by news presenters.

Secketary seems to be the norm these days as is Feb-you-ary.

Ontopofthesunset · 20/03/2017 07:39

Also 'pleece' as in 'the pleece attended the scene of the crime'. I don't expect 'poh-leece' à la southern US but some small schwa would be nice.

FreeTibet · 20/03/2017 07:44

I work with a v intelligent professional woman who "aks for something" instead of "asks". Drive me nuts.
