Ooh - and meant to say - it also depends on the sort of wedding/amount of guests you're having. We're having about 80 people and they're a fairly well dressed bunch on the whole .... I really didn't want to risk anyone "out dressing" me and didn't just want to feel like a well dressed guest at my own wedding iyswim...

Having said all that, I saw the most gorgeous green cocktail dress in Debenhams the other day and did wonder whether I'd have preferred it (I had my heart set on an emerald green dress but couldn't find anything)

There's no pic of the actual dress in the scarlet colour but this is the dress and this is the colour

I'm having some straps put on and some of the train taken off the bottom

TillyScoutsmum · 29/08/2008 22:26

this was the one I saw in Debenhams the other day. I probably haven't got the figure for it though tbh.... The corsetry on wedding dresses really helped my pudgy middle

OP posts:
flamingnora · 29/08/2008 22:29

Oh WOW! That is beautiful and will look so dramatic in scarlet. I bet you bloody well don't have a pudgy middle either, I'm sure it's the whole wedding thing that makes us feel podgy!

TillyScoutsmum · 29/08/2008 22:37

No - it was having a 10lb baby thing for me

flamingnora - look back on the thread for some ideas - Hoochiemammafeelgood wore a cocktail dress and looked fab - there are also some pictures of proper wedding dresses too. Lots of people have chosen different versions of a film star style dress - corsets and then a dress that goes out a bit at the bottom.

We had a very small wedding with a few close friends. I wore a blue cotton halterneck maxi dress. It was from Next's summer camp range in the summer catalogue.

On the day I felt really comfortable. My dh wanted me to wear jeans but I wanted something with a hint of wedding dress about it. It was very simple and relaxed but I felt special.

However, we had a family bbq and a few of the guests, although the invites said casual turned up in quite formal clothes - one person arrived in a beautiful long painted silk dress - much more 'stunning' than my dress!

But - they are the kind of people who like dressing up and I am not. The day was the real them and the real me - and we had a fantastic time!

Today if I had the choice I would still go for the dress I chose and in 20 yrs time.... well I think we will all be saying "Oh you should have seen the dress I got married in..." - just like our Mums do!!!!

Have you seen any dresses you like the look of yet? Perhaps you can make a few links?

teafortwo · 30/08/2008 11:05

Jut another thought, Flamingnora - I live in walking distance of Paris. People get married in the town hall here and I often see wedding parties going in and coming out. I have noticed that there is a trend for short off-white dresses with "wow" heels... like petiteanglaise wore on her wedding day -

Maybe this is a style you would find interesting!

TillyScoutsmum · 30/08/2008 12:10

Have a look at Candy Anthony dresses as well Nora - gorgeous 1950's short wedding dresses. A bit different but massively WOW

Stunning dresses on that link.

I need help !!!!!!!

I purchased my dress off ebay.

Just realised I need a hoop to go under it. Phoned up a wedding hire shop close to where we are staying and they said they dont hire, I have to purchase and it costs £70!!!

Any ideas?? That is a hell of a lot of money for us.

hughjarssss · 30/08/2008 15:57

Oh and she said its a full two tier hoop. whatever that means

hughjarssss · 30/08/2008 16:24

Found these on Ebay

Any good or do I need hoops? I cant find a picture but its very similar to the other ebay dress that was posted on this thread a while ago

I ordered my hoop from ebay. a proper shop not 2nd hand just in case they had lied about the quality of it!! mine is a one hoop one with net but then i just want a little flump as i call it.

Tily, i LOVE your dress and would also have had that if i could have afforded it (and if i could have found it and it look nice on!) i didn't know you were having t in RED though! WOW!!!

Wonder how Ooops got on today ?

hughjarssss · 30/08/2008 21:12

Great shout out T42!

I purchased one so panic over, I brought a new one from an ebay shop as well MOM.

LoveMyGirls · 30/08/2008 21:36

Hi all,

HJ, hope you can get one soon! Try not to panic.

I went wedding dress shopping today, I'm still so confused! Hoping the right dress comes along soon!

hughjarssss · 30/08/2008 21:39

did you see any you like LMG?

TillyScoutsmum · 30/08/2008 22:21

MoM - thanks re: dress.... Can't wait for my dress to come. I haven't actually tried it on yet in red so just hoping I can carry it off

LMG - still not found "the one" ?? If it helps at all, I'm not convinced everyone has the "the one" feeling. I don't think I did (either this time or last time). I think if you've got self esteem "ishoos", you'll always find something negative about every dress you try (not saying that's necessarily the case with you but I know I was never the type of person to be able to look at myself and think "wow, don't I look amazing"). Not sure if that makes sense but I reckon I tried on over 100 dresses when I got married the first time. I was happy with the way I looked on the day but I reckon I could have worn quite a few of the dresses I tried on and felt just as good.

Hugh - glad you got the hoop. Let me know where you got in from and whether you're happy with it. I'll need to get one sorted at some point and will probably go to ebay as well. £70 for a bloody underskirt that no one sees is ridiculous !

OP posts:
teafortwo · 30/08/2008 22:30

OH... ok TSM.... you are talking about dresses to LMG.... phew - you had me worried with those first few sentences!!!

flamingnora · 30/08/2008 22:30

Wow, wow, wow! I have just logged on and am utterly thrilled at all the fabulous words of wisdom on the dress! I can see me spending hours online perusing!

TillyScoutsmum · 30/08/2008 22:37

T42 . I could well have been talking about the groom at my first wedding . Sorry - shouldn't joke about it but on a serious note, comparing it to now, it was soooooo obviously not the right thing to do . I put it all down to nerves and cold feet instead of listening to my very astute women's intuition ...

Right - enough of the deep stuff - back to dresses. Let us know what you think Nora
