Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Happy Mother's Day everyone! My DCs colluded in sending me flowers through the post which arrived on Friday. First time they've ever done anything like that, so feeling rather chuffed. Hope you all have a lovely day, with or without your DCs. I'm planning on watching the rugby 😁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/03/2024 15:11

Happy Mother’s Day everyone! I hope you’ve all had a lovely restful day.

@crazycrofter how frightening for you to hear about the motorbike accident. Drivers are often oblivious to bikes so you can see how easily it happens. I’m glad your DS isn’t too badly injured and relived for you that he has made a sensible decision to give up the bike - even if it means a loss on the cost of the bike.

Shimy · 10/03/2024 15:17

Happy Mother's day to all you lovely ladies. I hope you're all having a lovely day being spoiled because they're old enough to do that now Grin. I'm going out with ds1 for lunch/dinner? and unfortunately ds2 cancelled his visit because he's caught the flu.

Shimy · 10/03/2024 15:19

@crazycrofter Just read your post about your DS! Shock. I'd be shaking, I hope this is the end of his bike riding fix.

Oblomov24 · 10/03/2024 16:34

Happy Mother's Day everyone.

Seeline · 10/03/2024 17:04

Had a phone call from my eldest - Happy Mother's Day, erm I've mislaid my wallet - what should I do?
😆 He's 22 - always a Mum though!

EwwSprouts · 10/03/2024 21:01

Happy Mothers' Day to one and all. Had a lovely call with DS (sent some chocs via DH) and went on a charity walk with friends. Saw my Mum yesterday. She has aged a lot recently and is railing against needing a stairlift.

Seeline · 12/03/2024 12:26

Any one knows what happens if you sleep through your Sainsbury's delivery slot? DD is poorly and didn't hear her phone. She's tried customer service but overseas call centre, and the line kept cutting out and she didn't really get what was being said. Now she's still poorly and got no dinner 😢

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/03/2024 14:49

Oh no, your poor DD @Seeline 🙁 I don’t know what they do, they may come back after the next delivery or two to try again? Does she have the number that tried to call her?

Cantonet · 12/03/2024 14:59

@Seeline Amazon Fresh can often deliver the same day, or almost instantly if you're in certain areas if your DD gets nowhere with the Sainsbo's order.

Seeline · 12/03/2024 15:54

Thanks both. It's not something I've had to deal with before! I suggested she ring the local big store who were much more helpful. Hopefully the driver is going to try again late afternoon so🤞 She eats gluten free so is restricted using some stores. She assured me she has chicken nuggets in the freezer 😁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/03/2024 16:53

Keeping my fingers crossed for her @Seeline

Seeline · 12/03/2024 17:46

Hurrah - she has food 😁 Not quite sure which system worked, but something did. Kids - always ready to offer a new challenge!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/03/2024 21:40

Hooray!! 🎉 😄

BlueMarigold · 16/03/2024 00:06

Can’t believe some children from this group are 20 already. My DD popped home for Mother’s Day. She made me a load of soup and froze it so I can have it for lunch. It feels like our roles have been reversed!

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/03/2024 00:21

DS came home for Mother's Day with his GF. She didn't want to go home as she lost her mum and it was the first Mother's Day. I felt honoured she wanted to spend it here - DS and I decided a really chilled day of bacon butties, forest walk and a take away.

Felt very proud of him for thinking of us both.

Cantonet · 16/03/2024 11:21

How lovely of your DD that she's looking after you @ blue marigold.
@purple sky that's so reassuring and a real tribute that your ds's girlfriend wants to come to yours for mother's day.

I spent Sunday/Monday batch cooking for dd1, as she'd had no time to do it herself. She's split up with her boyfriend of 3.5 years( although it was her decision) & is distracting herself by going out a lot. It was lovely to see her though, as she's working long hours we don't often see her for the weekend.

craggyrat · 20/03/2024 06:57

Going down to visit DS this weekend and he has said he wants to come back with us for a week - yay! His term finished last Friday and original plan was to stay in C all holidays so v much looking forward to having him home for a little while

EwwSprouts · 20/03/2024 08:39

Lovely to hear of so many thoughtful acts from the young people.

@craggyrat enjoy!

I'm picking DS up from the station later today. He'll be working to top up his funds for a couple of weeks and apparently has assignments due the first week of next term so we may not see that much of him. Still delighted to have him home though.

Seeline · 20/03/2024 08:44

Same here @EwwSprouts . Collecting DD on Sunday. She has 7 days work in the 2 weeks after Easter, and then another week before she goes back. But three essays to do during the break.
DS is coming back for a week on Easter Saturday, but hud dissertation is due at the end of April so not expecting to see much if him either.
Lovely to have them both home though.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/03/2024 08:44

DS isn't coming home for Easter because he's working. 😥

EffortlessDistraction · 20/03/2024 09:20

DS came back on Sunday, he has three weeks off but says he might go back for the third week, he has several assignments due in during April so is working on those while he's at home. I am helping him apply for a summer internship, there don't seem to be many of these in his field let alone in places he can get to easily so really wants to get the application as good as possible, it is complicated, he'd love to work at the place concerned, he went there on a field trip a while ago and loved it. He's also going back to his volunteering jobs here while he's at home for a day or two a week and has a hockey match at the weekend plus training tonight.

AnneOfCleavage · 20/03/2024 11:09

DD breaks up next Thursday and we pick her up Good Friday. Enjoy your time with your YP and have a fab Easter break. Can't believe two terms have nearly gone and her first year (your DC 2nd year) will be over.

Sunny here today which is very welcome after what seems an age of dreary weather. Patio pressure washed in expectation of a sunny Easter weekend - I better not have jinxed it now.

crazycrofter · 20/03/2024 11:14

Good luck to your ds with getting an internship @EffortlessDistraction .

Dd has been home a couple of days, for a doctors appointment. She's got a huge amount of work (assignments and then exams) to do over the next couple of months and is feeling the pressure as her average for semester 1 was really low. This is crunch time really. Her caring job in Notts is going really well though and they're very flexible, so she can have the four weeks at Easter off - and she's adamant that she must do regular shifts at her warehouse job here over Easter, or she'll lose the job. I was trying to persuade her to just focus on study.... but she says she'll just do morning shifts. She wants to keep the job so that she can do shifts over the summer too, as she doesn't want to do more than 2 days a week of the caring role then, as it will involve staying in her uni house on her own. She's also keeping her finger in with FestivAll and hoping to work for them at Reading festival.

ealingwestmum · 20/03/2024 13:39

Fingers x'd for your DS ED on the internship success.

That sounds tough Crazy, I hope the studies come together for her.

For those of you with returning YP for Easter - enjoy!
