Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Just had DD home for a couple of days on a bit of an impulse visit. Was a bit worried that something might be wrong, but she assured me she just wanted to see her Mum 😁 Despite quite a light timetable she has lectures Monday morning and Friday afternoon which makes weekend visits tricky. It was lovely seeing her - although she only has 2 weeks of term left!
She texted me on the coach home to say she had just heard that she'd got a job for Easter and summer on one of the kids holiday club schemes so she was really chuffed!

crazycrofter · 07/03/2024 10:29

That's great @Seeline , well done to her!

craggyrat · 07/03/2024 10:48

DS's 20th birthday today, it's so weird for them not to be a teen anymore!! Obviously he's out with friends tonight so we will see him on Sunday for a double whammy with Mother's day.

crazycrofter · 08/03/2024 15:41

Happy 20th birthday to your DS @JustHereWithMyPopcorn. Enjoy your joint celebrations tomorrow.

How lovely your DD did an impromptu visit @Seeline 😀 We live for these moments don't we!

DD is home for a flying visit this weekend and took me out for afternoon tea today for Mother's Day - she booked it weeks back at a fancy hotel and has been in cahoots with DH regarding it all. So lovely to have a one on one girly catch up. Is feeling a bit glum as she's ended things with a lad she had high hopes for as he revealed a few red flags which are on her non negotiables list of cons. Proud of her for trusting her instincts but it doesn't hurt any less at the time of break up.

Hope everyone has a lovely day tomorrow doing whatever they want to do FlowersCakeDaffodilBrewWine

crazycrofter · 09/03/2024 18:27

How lovely @AnneOfCleavage . Sorry to hear about the lad but good on her for trusting her instincts.

Ds’ motorbike dramas continue. He confessed he was hit by a car on Thursday - only told me as his knees were a mess (his protective trousers hadn’t arrived at that point) and he needed bigger plasters. He now seems to have accepted that he’s too big (as a weightlifter) for a 125cc and his limited eyesight in one eye is a risk. I’m relieved but he’s really down and cross with himself and now has a damaged motorbike which he’ll lose money on and £500 of protective gear 😬 Any idea where’s the best place to sell a motorbike? Really hoping he doesn’t lose too much on it

Cantonet · 09/03/2024 18:52

@crazycrofter that sounds terrifying 😱
But thank god he's seen sense ( hopefully... unless he's planning on getting a bigger bike?) & not hurt himself too badly.
Lovely to hear of the flying visits & all of the brilliant Internships.
I'm currently trying to chivvy my youngest along in his A level studies. He's still only heard from 2 choices so far & says what's the point in studying too hard? I don't know where his head's at, but I can't really pressure him too much, because of his previous mental health issues.

crazycrofter · 09/03/2024 19:16

Good luck with the revision chivying @Cantonet . Where does he want to go? Has he not heard from his favourite?

Ds seems to be starting to work seriously now, although he’s decided that school is largely a waste of time as they don’t teach and he can’t concentrate in school anyway. I think he’s probably right but might need more guidance than he thinks - and it means school are on my back again 😬 because he’s barely been in.

craggyrat · 09/03/2024 19:41

@AnneOfCleavage - afternoon tea sounds lovely!

@crazycrofter sounds v scary with the bike. Glad he's okay even if he's fed up re the money wasted

ealingwestmum · 09/03/2024 22:53

Omg Crazy. You’ve probably not slept well since he got the bike, fingers crossed he can offload it without too much of a financial hit.

Hope his offers come through soon Cantonet, good luck to both yours and Crazy’s DSs’ on the study efforts in prep for exams.

Anne I’m sorry to hear a day was called, but impressive that she was able to act so decisively on the red flags.

blinkbonny · 10/03/2024 08:39

Hi everyone and Happy Mothers' Day to all. I'm just back from a long trip away visiting family - DS surprised me by being at the airport with DH to pick me up, it was lovely to see him (and DH of course, though he got rather sidelined when I saw DS!! He came back from uni to be here for Mothers' Day which has made me feel Smile through the jet lag. Things seem to be going ok with uni and with his gf - he's hoping for an Easter internship but hasn't heard back yet so not sure that will happen. Well done to everyone's DC for their internship successes and varying adventures, I haven't been in for a while so just caught up and too much to comment on individually! Love hearing all the updates and marvelling at what varied experiences everyone is having.

Cantonet · 10/03/2024 10:04

Happy Mothers Day all💐
Dd1 has just informed me she is making a surprise visit home, so I'll crack out a roast.
She will have to share the bed with the spaniel ( who thinks she's a little girl ), who has now misappropriated it as a rather smelly basket, with all her toys.
I will have to change the sheets for her.
