Thread 49 - Covid GCSE Cohort - The nights are drawing in...

Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

DS used Nicholas Humphries @blinkbonny , I wouldn't recommend them though as they haven't been particularly helpful - especially when they left them with a non working boiler for over a week and my DH had to fix it when he dropped DS back after the sickness bout.

stoneysongs · 05/01/2024 14:36

Hello all, not been on for ages but will catch up with all the news shortly.

@blinkbonny DS didn't use an agency I don't think - he's renting directly from a landlord and I think he came recommended. Anyway he's paying through the nose so I wouldn't go anywhere near his advice 😂

There do seem to be options in Lenton for 4-5 beds around £100-120pw on Rightmove, you can search for student rentals on there.

Or if by chance there are 8 of them, next door but one to DS (terrace of three townhouses) has been empty this year at least. Very handy for campus! But something like £140pw I think.

craggyrat · 05/01/2024 14:58

Good luck with the mocks everyone. That seems a long time ago now.

Taking DS back tomorrow. Am hoping he fits in some work around rowing, swimming, basketball, climbing and the not really a girl friend just a friend who is a girl!

crazycrofter · 05/01/2024 15:26

@blinkbonny i think dd looked on purplefrog and unihomes but I’m not sure if they’re agents or just sites?

@JustHereWithMyPumpkin this is part of the problem, he isn’t applying to uni and he’s taking a gap year (or two!) so no need for predicted grades.

JustHereWithMyNewYear · 05/01/2024 15:32

@craggyrat DS1 is probably going back this weekend, he's trying to finish his coursework at home (which seems very confusing to me - land law) so that he can party with everyone when he gets back. 😂I think he's forgotten that he also has an exam to do...

@crazycrofter oh 😬

AnneOfCleavage · 05/01/2024 16:17

That pic is gorgeous @EerilyDecorated. Each time I look at it I see something new. A well deserved win 👏👏👏

Good luck to those taking mocks. How mean to throw them into exams their first days back. I'm back invigilating from Monday so our school have given them this weeks' grace to get back into work mode. I'm also back at my other school next week so have had 3weeks off which has been wonderful esp as DD has been here too.

Hardly anyone in RL knows this yet but DD passed her driving test yesterday on one of the worst days weather wise in the South so we are super proud of her. She got a cancellation but then a few days later wished she hadn't and wanted to cancel it but she'd have lost her money. So glad it's done as her lovely driving instructor said that he is giving it up to change job direction (he only said this once she'd passed) so she just squeaked in.

Happy New Year to you all.

craggyrat · 05/01/2024 16:21

Great news re the driving test @AnneOfCleavage !

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 05/01/2024 16:31

Congratulations to your DD @AnneOfCleavage that's a good start to the year!

Piggywaspushed · 05/01/2024 16:37

DS also passed his test yesterday!

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 05/01/2024 16:40

A double whammy of driving tests! Congrats to your DS too @Piggywaspushed .

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 05/01/2024 16:51

Congrats on new drivers!!

EwwSprouts · 05/01/2024 16:55

Excellent news about the driving test successes!

Good luck to those going through mocks.

I'm taking DS back to uni tomorrow. This break seems to have whizzed past.

crazycrofter · 05/01/2024 16:57

Well done on the driving test successes! It's such a great thing to get out of the way as it makes such a difference to their lives.

AnneOfCleavage · 05/01/2024 17:04

Thanks you lovelies and well done to mini Piggy on his test result too - was it beastly weather where you were too? .Crossing everything that mini crazycrofter gets a cancellation soon 🤞🤞

craggyrat · 05/01/2024 17:12

Congrats to your DS as well @Piggywaspushed!

Piggywaspushed · 05/01/2024 18:29

No, actually we had a lull. The weather set in about 4 pm yesterday so lots of floods this morning.

Delphigirl · 05/01/2024 18:32

Congrats to the new drivers! Hope my DD will join you in a couple of weeks. Third time lucky I hope.
So nice still to have my boys here but they both head off middle of next week. DD doesn’t have mocks until after half term which is good as she has been SO ill with norovirus on top of Covid, I don’t know how she would cope with exams next week. We are currently all healthy though - negative tests today Whoo hoo. I’m back to work on Monday after my unexpected Covid week off.

mummyinbeds · 05/01/2024 18:57

Happy New Year! Better late than never 🤣

Well done on passed driving tests. Boo to revision.

@blinkbonny DS's Nottingham House is with Reed Residential. He had nothing to do with organising it but they seen very relaxed with deadlines, do everything online, sort bills packages. What they don't do is remove previous tenants rubbish from the back yard.

@JustHereWithMyPumpkin
That land law question is awful!! DS has been staring at it for days 🙁 He hasn't started thinking about his two exams yet. He's staying at home to do them so he doesn't sleep in. I've no idea when he's heading back to Nottingham.
DD is going back to Aber on Tuesday for one exam and then no lectures until the end of the month.

PhotoDad · 05/01/2024 18:57

Congrats to new drivers!!

I've been playing boardgames with DS(16) most of the week, while DD has been doing Art and watching TV with us in the evenings, and have also after much stress managed to get my dad settled into into a "nursing/dementia" home just 15 mins walk from our house! DW has been back at work.

School resumes on Monday, so hoping to fill the weekend with a wildlife/photography trip tomorrow, and more boardgaming on Sunday. DD heads back to uni next Friday.

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 05/01/2024 21:29

@Delphigirl urgh to the Norovirus! I used to dread when it was going around schools when people would send their kids in after being sick. I am quite phobic about sick. 🙁

@mummyinbeds It really is a stinker, DS has been going round in circles too. He was trying to discuss it with me earlier as he just couldn’t get his head around it - I couldn’t even understand what he was saying. 😂. Did your DS get to lectures? Apparently there is some flow chart that you have to follow that the lecturer only filled in during the lecture but it’s not on the videos on Moodle. If he hasn’t got it I can ask DS to take a pic.

@photodad glad to hear you have your dad settled so quickly in a place close to you, that must be very reassuring.

Delphigirl · 05/01/2024 21:35

If you upload the pic I can probably explain it to him @mummyinbeds !

blinkbonny · 05/01/2024 22:38

Thanks for the inputs on housing, Notts crew! Will pass on to DS and cross fingers we don't end up paying way more for a worse place than he had already sorted. Apparently the decision to change was mainly driven by one person who didn't want the room that's not now going to be used by the girl doing a year abroad to be taken by a "randomer". Sigh.

Thanks for the input, and well done to all the new drivers! And @PhotoDad that must be a real relief about your dad - I well remember the stress of sorting similar for MIL some years ago. Hope he feels settled quickly.

mummyinbeds · 05/01/2024 22:44

@JustHereWithMyPumpkin yes please to the flowchart. He didn't go to many of the lectures 🤦
I apparently passed Land Law in 1991. I have no memory of it whatsoever. Might come back to you for some help @Delphigirl 😁

Delphigirl · 05/01/2024 23:21

Well I’m a chancery specialist so am meant to know this stuff…

cariadambyth · 06/01/2024 09:30

Well done to the new drivers. Dd still hasn’t started learning or done the theory exam. She seems very reluctant but I don’t know why? I’m encouraging her to learn this year as, I think if she doesn’t now, she probably won’t. She’s heading back to RH on Sunday and DS starts his Year11 mocks on Monday.
