Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Looks delicious @Delphigirl ! Love black forest

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/09/2023 19:09

That cake looks DELICIOUS, Delphigirl! Please save me a piece. 🤩

Ph, crazy, he sounds so much fun and I’m laughing out loud at his Oxbridge shenanigans!
DS went to Italy on a youth orchestra tour a couple of weeks ago. His speciality is photoshopping photos, which he posts as a response on every single chat…none of the staff on the trip were spared. Luckily, they thought it was hilarious, but some of them were close to the bone and had us wincing when he showed us!

crazycrofter · 09/09/2023 19:17

Hahaha @Alsoplayspiccolo , that’s a great skill to have! He needs to be careful though - ds’ first suspension from school back in year 9 involved photoshopping pictures of a staff member and creating an Instagram account for him 😬 Some of his friends then got quite carried away with the captions and speech bubbles as you might imagine 13 year olds would do….. 😩 Ds does sometimes go too far with things but I hope he’s learning from experience!

@Delphigirl that cake looks delicious!

Fiddlersgreen · 09/09/2023 19:26

Cake looks amazing @Delphigirl well done!
I can’t do anything in this heat, been sat in front of the fan all day. Taking DS back to Leicester tomorrow

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/09/2023 19:50

He’s got into trouble for similar before, crazy. Thankfully, we know most of the staff who were on the trip, and they know DS well so took it in the spirit intended…even the conductor (who was ‘inserted’ between Hitler and Stalin in one creation!!
I’ve already warned his new house parent. Luckily, she has a DS in the same year, and seems to have a good sense of humour.
One of DS’s skills is his ability to show different sides according to occasion/circumstances - some teachers describe him as quiet or sensible, when he’s anything but, once he’s relaxed and has sussed how far he can take things.

crazycrofter · 09/09/2023 22:38

That’s a great skill to have @Alsoplayspiccolo!

Ds tends to go too far and then have to rein it in if it’s inappropriate/not appreciated! His ADHD is his downfall really, he can be very impulsive.

Oblomov23 · 10/09/2023 08:41

Between Stalin and Hitler. 🤣

Thanks @Delphigirl for indulging me. Your Black Forest looks incredibly yummy, lush! Yum.

Ooh yummy

EwwSprouts · 10/09/2023 14:32

Fab cake! We just had melon and it was crunchy and tasteless. Need to change teams 😁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/09/2023 20:50

Congrats to your DS @Alsoplayspiccolo 🚙 🙌

Well done and good luck to all the newbies starting uni and new jobs.

please can I have a piece of that cake? 🙏

Shimy · 11/09/2023 19:03

Congrats to your ds @Alsoplayspiccolo . I'm trying to explain the concept of photoshopping to mil at the moment. Very very difficult. She has discovered YouTube and believes everything she sees e.g Royal family (she's a royalist) is absolutely true. Charles & Camilla have a secret dc and there's a photo of all 3 them together. Cries of it must be true because...I've seen the photo on Yooootubee!!!

@EwwSprouts I love crunchy melon, but sweet. Hope you're luckier next time.

PhotoDad · 11/09/2023 20:43

@Shimy Maybe just call it "airbrushing"? 😀

DD settling back in, she volunteered to be a "Welcome Buddy" and gave a tour to a new student yesterday. Bit of a manic week here with logistics, DW has just started a new role which requires her to travel a lot, and I have to drive things and people to various places. Doesn't help that someone nicked DS' bike from outside school today..!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/09/2023 07:28

We have a birthday in the house, DS2 is 16 today. I’m having cake for breakfast as is demanded of these occasions! 🎂

ealingwestmum · 12/09/2023 08:12

Enjoy JustHere, many happy returns to him 🎂

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/09/2023 08:15

Delphigirl · 12/09/2023 12:19

Happy birthday to him @JustHereWithMyPopcorn 🎂🎉

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/09/2023 12:29

Thanks @Delphigirl 🙂

crazycrofter · 12/09/2023 18:23

Happy birthday to ds @JustHereWithMyPopcorn . I love lemon drizzle!

PhotoDad · 12/09/2023 18:42

Happy birthday, @JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/09/2023 19:43

EwwSprouts · 12/09/2023 19:54

Happy birthday mini Popcorn. Cake and pizza sounds fab.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 13/09/2023 09:33

Thanks @EwwSprouts he had a nice day (despite school!).

PaddingtonPaddington · 13/09/2023 11:32

Fell off this thread somewhat. DD had a tough end of term followed by a resit a few weeks ago which she passed. She is now back on track having trialled a different ADHD medication over the summer which works really well for her and is now looking forward to year 2 starting next week. We’ll be dropping her back this weekend

Lots of good news and cake on this thread and lovely to see lots of updates from familiar names.

285NeuerNamen · 13/09/2023 15:17

Welcome back @PaddingtonPaddington It's really easy to ignore the thread when things are not going so well, I know I have been guilty of that. (DS also didn't had a tough last semester and is resitting the year). I am glad that your DD has passed the resit and can now move on. Good luck to her.

Happy belated birthday miniPopcorn.
