Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

@Takeittotheboss golly, sorry to hear that! I remember how quickly DS2s appendix blew up. One minute having Sunday lunch, the next prepped for surgery 😱

@craggyrat so pleased surgery went well. Hope you are being well looked after at home.

thanks for new thread @Oblomov23

Takeittotheboss · 26/08/2023 10:51

Just quick update on DS gap year. Continued travels with 2 months in Asia, then home 1 day before away for 2 months working at English language school. Flew down to holiday with us for 2 weeks & now home catching up on everything/one.
Driving test wise, has one booked for mid Nov in uni city (theory test runs out mid Dec), but never driven at all, plus unsure about starting uni & driving lessons in a new city.....argh! What to do?

Takeittotheboss · 26/08/2023 10:53

Thks@Delphigirl . Yes, very out of the blue. As we were just on point of leaving for holiday, guess my body thought I had time for it?🤔

craggyrat · 26/08/2023 11:04

@Takeittotheboss sorry to gear about the appendix and glad you got it sorted. DS still got his almost two years after initial problems!

Being v well looked after at home by DH and DS. Not lifting a finger, except to do post surgery exercises!

EwwSprouts · 26/08/2023 11:12

@Takeittotheboss Wishing you a speedy recovery.

@craggyrat Glad you are back home and menfolk are stepping up.

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 26/08/2023 11:38

Thank you @Oblomov23 and so sorry you are still suffering 💐.

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 26/08/2023 11:50

I was at a festival all day yesterday apologies everyone 😅. The site map on my lanyard was crappie so I was v conscious to not use my phone and keep it charged. As it turns out the map on the festival app was crappie too.

Also had some rubbish news. I've not been feeling myself lately , stuck in a cycle of trying to lose weight/diet/exercise but feeling really quite unwell when I do. Lately ive been feeling really low in afternoons too. Turns out I'm pre-diabetic and anaemic. My Dad has Diabetes. So lifestyle changes it is! Feeling a bit overwhelmed and also a bit worried as really need to get my anaemia sorted before anything or it just won't work.

I do want to have more energy (first and foremost) longterm and lose weight more than anything I put in my mouth shortterm though so that's a positive. I might start a Christmas Glow up thread.

Good news I did 35k steps yesterday at the festival, bad news I hurt like buggery today and have to do it all again ...in the rain!

Dd is at the festival too, she's just left in fishnets, a denim mini and a top I really thought was underwear. I'm going to pack waterproof for her so she can come and find me when her hoodie doesn't cut it.

Great to hear @craggyrat ! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

handmademitlove · 26/08/2023 11:58

@OrangeCinnamonLatte sorry to hear that. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago, with very high readings. I was really strict with myself and after 6 months was in remission. It was a very hard few months but like you, my dad was diabetic and I knew the problems it could bring if not managed properly. Message me if you want any tips or support!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/08/2023 16:08

Thanks @Oblomov23🙂

@Cantonet keeping fingers crossed that Ddog continues to feel better and enjoying his cuddles.

@craggyrat hope you recover quickly from the op.

Sorry to hear about the driving test fails @Piggywaspushed and @sazzy5 I keep getting caught out by the 20 zones when I pop over to west London - it's a nightmare if you're not used to them.

Feel better soon @Takeittotheboss

Alsoplayspiccolo · 26/08/2023 17:48

Thanks for the new thread, Oblomov23, and for your stirling work on the updated list, singingstones.

Hope DDog enjoys the time he has left, cantonet. He sounds much adored.
We’ve had to say goodbye to 3 of our lovely pups and it never gets easier. Fitting that yours is enjoying being spoilt on international dog day.

Hope your recovery is problem-free, craggyrat. Don’t be tempted to do too much too soon - embrace being looked after.

285NeuerNamen · 26/08/2023 20:10

@Takeittotheboss hope your recovery is swift and that your holiday was insured and you can go another time.

@OrangeCinnamonLatte i am expert on anaemia, having been on/off anaemic for 30 odd years and had every treatment and investigation. Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss. I know how very crap it can make you feel when levels are very low.

sorry to hear about the driving test fails.

AnneOfCleavage · 26/08/2023 21:52

Wrote a post yesterday on the other thread but iPad died so it didn't send or save - grr. Just found this new one now.

Congratulations on the GCSE results and commiserations on the driving test fails. Can totally empathise as we too are waiting for a test after DD's test was cancelled last week. Our local test centre has a low pass rate but DD doesn't want to try another as wouldn't have tried out the roads.

Sorry to hear of poorly people and dogs on here 🙁 and thanks for the updated list @singingstones - funny to see DD not having 'gap year' tagged on for the first time. It's actually a reality that she is going next month. Not ready for her to leave and she is 50/50 excited/ overwhelmed by the nearness of it all. Doing some summer work as I type.

Happy BH weekend 😄

Shimy · 26/08/2023 22:18

Cantonet · 26/08/2023 09:57

Don't worry @Shimy.
Doggie is very sick still & not long for this world. But it's actually really lovely to have him at home. And the anti-sickness injection the hospital gave him means he's still eating & drinking. The rest of the time he's being cuddled & he's happy to be home.

You’re very gracious @Cantonet . Whatever the future holds, your dog seems to be very much enjoying all the love being showered on him and I hope that lasts as long as possible.

Cantonet · 27/08/2023 20:27

Rusty - went to sleep this afternoon.
