Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

I'm glad your DD seems to be settling @Zebracat.

Exploding ovens and leaking showers falling through the floor sounds scary.

DS's house currently has a leaking shower with water coming through the kitchen light! He has switched the kitchen light circuit off at the main board and reported it to the agent via an online portal. I suspect he has just reported it as a lower priority leaking shower rather than the water in the electrics issue so will see how long that takes to resolve. They also have an odd conservatory/extension thing as part of their kitchen, I would be very surprised if it meets building regs, but have now found out that ground water occasionally comes up through a hole in the floor there too Shock

Despite all of that they are thinking of keeping the house next year...It's a nice layout and in a good location.

After chasing lots he has finally heard back from the student support person who has now booked him in, but typically when he has a physio appointment...

Wow, all these dubious house fixtures and fittings! 😮
Knowing him, my DS will head straight for one of these style of residences next year (currently in first year halls).....as he's v laid-back with a "I'm sure everything will be great, mum" type of attitude.

Yes sorry all. I've been trying to catch up over the last couple of weeks but for some reason I can navigate to read page three of thread and last page (then I have to go backwards).

Sorry to hear of house issues... must get the plumber out to look at the leak in the bathroom.

Dd OK. Some stuff has come out/ happened that would be very outing (and unfair) for me to share on here. Reading have been amazing and I would not hesitate to recommend them based on their truly outstanding student support systems. Dd has literally turned a corner because of their interventions and I am beyond grateful. She is now enjoying her course, making friends and staying away from relationships for now.

I met DH 26 years ago, he is 12 years older. He is in better shape than me !

Name change too 😆

Seeline · 17/10/2023 21:46

So pleased Reading was able to support your DD @OrangeCinnamonLatte . Hope she continues to find her feet.

EversoDetermined · 17/10/2023 22:14

If you had this thread bookmarked on page 3 I think that would account for all the oddness @OrangeCinnamonLatte

So pleased Reading have been so supportive of DD. We were really impressed with it on Open Day. Ds differed for ages whether to apply there or not. He didn't in the end because he found the town a bit big and busy but not for any reason to do with the uni itself.

Oblomov23 · 18/10/2023 08:07

Sorry to hear that Orange. Glad Reading have been supportive.

Sorry to hear things haven’t been great for DD @OrangeCinnamonLatte but pleased she is having good support.

i can’t say the same for Bath, DS still hasn’t managed to actually see the student support lady that he spoke to over the summer. He is hoping to see her this weekend or next weekend…. It seems it’s him having to do all the chasing which is not really “support” in my eyes.

thanks in advance for the new thread, may well name change too…
