Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2023 08:35

Oh, poor wee doggie 😞

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2023 10:06

Anyone know anything about iphones? DS was trying to set up a new one (under contract with Tescos) and it has locked him out. He is at work til 5 so Tesco won't help me over the phone.

I can't even find a way to factory reset without having access to the phone . He was asked to enter a passcode yesterday which he duly did and now it won't recognise it.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 29/08/2023 11:08

Oh, Cantonet, Rusty was a beautiful boy. ❤️
I know he’ll have had the most wonderful life with you, and will have paid back your love in spades.
Sleep tight, Rusty. Xx

sazzy5 · 29/08/2023 11:10

@Cantonet so sorry to hear about Rusty, our 4 legged friends are so special.
@Fiddlersgreen i hope you get an appointment soon, everything seems to be taking ages these days.

EversoDetermined · 29/08/2023 11:53

@Piggywaspushed might be worth calling the Apple helpline, even if he didn't buy the phone from them, they are extremely helpful.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2023 11:55

We might end up resorting to that. Everything online is gobbledegook.

I think any old phone shop will do it too but as it's a new phone, I'm not keen to start messing with it, or paying for it!

crazycrofter · 29/08/2023 12:17

We’ve used the apple helpline before a few times when phones have done that sort of thing. Does he have an Apple ID from a previous phone?

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2023 12:22

No, he's never had an iPhone. But he was in the midst of setting up ID when the phone attempted to text him a code which of course he couldn't receive as he put the phone number in which was transferring across. We didn't think it would be an issue and just gave up but now it won't let us in. No idea then if he even has Apple ID!

crazycrofter · 29/08/2023 15:36

We’ve all (except dh) got iPhones and have had them for years but this is the one thing I don’t like about them - their security! I foolishly had my work email connected to my first Apple ID and it was such a pain when I moved jobs! I’ve got two apple IDs now. Just make sure he never forgets his password… I’d recommend the helpline though to sort out initial issues.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2023 16:38

We are sorted. A man in town was bewildered by the passcode issue but duly reset the phone with no passcode and all is well!

I am always telling DH off for everything being on work emails.

Decorhate · 29/08/2023 20:50

I was in Dunelm earlier & it was full of teenagers plus parents clearly shopping for uni! I don’t think I need to buy much for Ds going into 2nd year though I need to get out his box of kitchen stuff & put it through the dishwasher

ProggyMat · 29/08/2023 21:02

Thanks for the new thread @Oblomov23 - hope you have a solution to your back soon- nowt worse, I’ve suffered for years 💐
Belting work on ‘our list’, as always @singingstones !
@craggyrat Hope- although I’m sure they are 😊-that the ‘men folk’ are continuing to look after you! Any news on DS’s second accommodation?
Run free bonnie lad, Rusty @Cantonet 💐
@scarlettdarling How is your lad doing? Hope he’s had a fabulous summer break!

craggyrat · 30/08/2023 06:41

@ProggyMat - yes not lifting a finger here! DH does most things anyway as I work and he is retired but now am doing absolutely nothing. DS has had a couple of days in London and Oxford with uni friends. His first time in London! He's back this pm and then working for next few days at the local hospital again. He still has the second lot of accommodation he was given so cheaper than first lot but not as cheap as he would like. Accommodation people say once freshers are allocated about 15 September they will find him something else then so that's good. Hope you've had a good summer
