FN - I have 3 girls - they have always had differnet size bottoms (due to age) and thus different size knickers. However, it was helpful when potty training that they could wear each others if needed - I think I've been particularly lucky in that the oldest favours tight knickers and the youngers like theirs on the baggy side.

Socks are a completely different matter though - we have what someone else has called the communist approach to socks - no-one has ownership rights over any

flashingnose · 12/08/2005 09:18

Thank you MrsWobble! Didn't have this with ds and dd1 (obviously) but am training dd2 and her bottom is pretty much the same size as dd1's, hence my dilemma .

Think you're right about the socks...

Lonelymum · 12/08/2005 09:51

flashingnose, you have hit upon an interesting problem. I think my ability to work out whose pants are whose shows that I am really able to do the most complex paid work too - rocket scientist? no problem!

I have three ds's and a dd. Ds1 and ds2 are only 18 months apart so, in many cases, could wear the same size pants, but I try and keep them segregated by at least a size. Ds2 wears ds1's pants when ds1 grows out of them or I buy him new ones. I have to think, a I am sorting the washing, all white pants = ds1, ds1's space pants = ds2, except Star Wars pants = ds1, all red pants = ds2, etc , etc. Dd is obviously wearing different pants, but now ds3 is starting with pants, I sometimes absentmindedly chuck some 2-3 pants in ds2's drawer by mistake!

I'm alright with pants - tend to buy different designs for ds1 and 2 and they are obviously different sizes. But socks - they seem to shrink a bit in the tumble dryer, all look really similar, and ds1 (8) is constantly coming down with ds2's (3) socks on going "Muu-uum, my socks are a bit tight..."

Lonelymum · 12/08/2005 09:57

My boys have identical sized and colour school socks. When I bought them, I said, you can just share them right? but ds1 insisted he wanted to keep his for him so I sewed a tiny bit of red cotton onto each of his socks. Aren't I a hero? (Or mad, yes I know!)

marthamoo · 12/08/2005 10:02

Whn ds1 started school I sewed name tapes in his school socks. Yes, I was mad. No, I will never do it again.

BarefootMama · 12/08/2005 11:13

Laziness yeah!

ds1 20 months
dd 18 months
ds2 24 months
ds3 27 months............. i see a paTTERN!

Lonelymum · 12/08/2005 12:19

Grrrr. Reporting in today to say that dh is home and messing up my routine. I went to town for a while and came back to find damp patch on floor (not wiped properly) and dh had given ds3 a drink but had not been around for him 15-20 mins later when the wee came out. Doesn't he know you have to put the child on the potty, not expect them to ask for it?

Lonelymum · 12/08/2005 12:31

Oh and he hadn't bothered to change ds3's wet pants either! He said he hadn't seen the point in changing them as they were already wet from when ds3 had been in the sand pit.

What planet are men on?

bettythebuilder · 12/08/2005 12:41

Hello.V useful thread. I've been potty training dd (2.7)for about 5 days now and she is doing really well. Stayed dry in town yesterday, told me when she needed a wee then held it in until we made it all the way to the M&S toilets. I was very proud! I have been using pull ups with pants over them when we've been out, and there have been no leaks at all. I have a query though. If we are out somewhere with no loos eg a play park, what can I do? Take a potty? If so, where do I empty it?

purpleturtle · 12/08/2005 12:43

chuck it in the bushes

bettythebuilder · 12/08/2005 12:52

Really?Won't old ladies tut at me?
Sorry to ignore you lonelymum.maybe dh thinks wet pants will encourage ds?!

purpleturtle · 12/08/2005 13:11

I'm not particularly bothered by old ladies' tutting. I'm sure most of them would get over it!

Lonelymum, I have to confess to leaving ds in slightly wet pants at times too. He's been wearing a nappy for the last 2 and a half years!

Lonelymum · 12/08/2005 13:30

I would leave slightly wet pants, but these were soaked!

I second weeing in bushes. I wouldn't bother with the potty even! My childrn have been known to wee in bushes near to playgrounds at very late ages. I won't say what for fear of disapproval.

SoftFroggie · 12/08/2005 14:20

Sat 6+ times this morning.

1 wee in garden

1 miniscule wee in potty after lengthy sitting, followed by praise, sweetie, etc, then I pop upstairs to change DS2 nappy and DS1 does enormous wee on floor. WHY didn't it come out with the tiny wee minutes earlier???

Am about to give him lots to drink as DS2 asleep and so I'll be able to chuck him on potty in 15 mins time.

Really can't see that this is going to work - am feeling despondant.

purpleturtle · 12/08/2005 14:28

Keep going SoftFroggie. it will happen.

SoftFroggie · 12/08/2005 14:29

First poo in pants while putting DS2 to sleep.

DH home this w/e. Bet he has much more success - not sure whether to be or or that he'll be the one to crack it.

purpleturtle · 12/08/2005 14:38

You will be able to be very [proud] of your ds1. Nothing to do with dh.

purpleturtle · 12/08/2005 14:39

You know when you have a really tight lid on a jar, and you try and try, and then someone else takes it off really easily? Same principle.

Dh might 'crack it', but it's only because of your ground work.

Enid · 12/08/2005 15:46

god

I havent trained dd2 and she is 2.10 and starts Kindergarten in sept where they expect them to be trained

yipes

she is a clever girl but is totally resistant to going on the potty and is also unbribeable. She just doesnt care about sweets unlike dd1 whose whole day is based around thinking about sweets/planning how to get them/where the next sweet is coming from.

It doesnt bother me in the slightest. If it were up to me (ie no kindergarten) I'd just leave her until she did it herself
