Just wondered how everyone's getting on, having actually produced?

I'm absolutely knackered, and have very nasty tear which is giving me grief (I ripped into the muscle a bit) but am in much MUCH better shape than with dd2 - and dd1 is thoroughly enthusiastic. Mind you, dd2 is still asleep most of the time. I'm aware that the next few weeks and months are going to be, ahem, not the easiest, which is why I thought it might be worth keeping in touch...?

Well DP left this morning at 4am - DS1 very stroppy probably because DP kept him up very late but strangely enough DS2 is starting to be a joy - I am keeping a record of his sleeps and feeds and that helps to keep a sense of control..

Like Motherinferior I have started not to feed him at night ie: between 11pm to 7am in the morning. He still wakes at 2am but I settle him back to sleep, it means that he eats really well at his 7am feed and has started eating more during the day - now nearly eating as much as he was doing when he was feeding at night. Ok. its only a few days now but with DP away I really want to try and tackle this sleeping through - both because I need my sleep but also as it is relatively calm without DP so good time to sort it out.

motherinferior · 31/08/2003 16:47

Oh, Kaz, best of luck. I am sooo dreading even my first night getting them both to bed (on Friday, dp at best mate's stag night) not to speak of first w/end with just the two of them (last one in September, dp at same chap's wedding - I asked dp jokingly if he was planning to snog one of the bridesmaids and he looked at me in HORROR at the prospect of any nubile young thing getting between him and a decent night's kip!).

Yesterday was a total nightmare but sleeping was a lot better today. And I've been driving the car on my own, how exciting!

Day started at 6am, ( or was it 2am when DS2 woke up) and has just finished with just DS2 to wake for 11pm feed....

Phew, lets hope tomorrow is better....

God, isn't it a nightmare? dh is feeding dd2 as I type, this is an early "last" feed for her so I am praying she will take it all and then sleep til 6ish. It varies completely from night to night at the moment, but I just wish she would take more than 5 oz then maybe she would sleep through more easily. dd1 is back at school on Wednesday and I CANNOT wait. I might actually get some housework done.
Sleep well ladies......

motherinferior · 01/09/2003 08:50

Dahlia, is she actually hungry in the night or quellable with a dummy? Just a thought. We got from 11ish to 6ish with only a brief waking - I'm so trying to get out of both her and me automatically waking at 4ish...

My parents are coming to lunch, oh what fun. Not.

OP posts:
kaz33 · 01/09/2003 15:49

Motherinferior - DS2 is doing the same as you, slept from 11am to 7.30 with a wake up at 4am quellrd by a dummy.

He is now officially teething and he is only 13 weeks old - mouth like niagra falls and hand constantly in mouth, pushing bottle away when hungry.

Have had two terrible days oh yes, this one is not over - brief respite as DS1 sleeps. He is so bored, I feel like a c**p mother as I fail to interest him in stimulating craft activites and we don't get out of the house till 11am.

But deserve it, I did something not very nice to someone recently so bad karma i thimk.

Dahlia · 01/09/2003 17:57

Motherinferior, she howls when she wakes in the night and is definitely hungry - I was up from 3am til 4.30am this morning and I am dreading tonight! We were doing so well too. She sucks her fingers a lot now, maybe she has a tooth coming, but in any case it makes a right din in the middle of the night! And Kaz, I too feel like a crap mother, the most exciting thing we have done these holidays is go to the park.

happyspider · 01/09/2003 21:46

kaz, you say:
He is now officially teething and he is only 13 weeks old - mouth like niagra falls and hand constantly in mouth, pushing bottle away when hungry.
This is spookily description of ds these days, and I was getting worried something was wrong with him: are these signs of teething?

He sleeps from 7PM to 4AM, and I should be sleeping now too as I am shattered, but got so much to catch up with!

motherinferior · 01/09/2003 21:59

Oh god, yes, the park. And I hate the park, I have to confess. Managed the song and story session at the library again last week - the fact that everyone sings out of tune and the bloke leading the session doesn't have any idea about chord changes is balanced out by the fact dd1 bounces about at the front, dd2 naps (of course, little ***, we're out in public aren't we) and I stash myself behind the buggy with a book...

...but it's the park again tomorrow.

Have to start looking at schools too. Oh My God.

kaz33 · 02/09/2003 14:26

Yes, happyspider - sound like teething - when DD takes a suck on the bottle in causes a vacumn which can hurt the teething tooth - or something like that !!

Teeth dont normally come through to about 6 months but as with everything to do with babies it is all dependent on your baby. Babies can teethe for months before you actually see any teeth - look for white lumps under the gum which are little teeth on the way through, but you probably wont be able to see anything.

kaz33 · 04/09/2003 21:22

Well survived till Thursday, off to my parents tommorow for a respite and then back to face solo parenthood on monday.

Yours reaching new levels of exhaustion.

KMS · 04/09/2003 22:23

hi all sorry haven't been on for a while but have just returned from 2 wk holiday with 5wk DD 3yr DS2 5yr DS1 and DH of course. DD is now 11lb 7oz (8lb 14oz at birth) so think my milk must be gold top!
She is now full of smiles.
DH is doing nights this week and isn't home from till 9am so will have to get boys up and ready and to school on time in between feeds and nappy changes. (why do babies always fill nappy on the way out the door!) not sure how I will cope espesially as DS1 doesn't want to go!

Both my boys teethed very early. DS1 had all 8 incisors in 2 wks when he was just 5 mths. try anbesol liquid as it numbs where you dab it. Gels get licked off before they work. not looking forward to all that again! I have great sympathy for you.

motherinferior · 05/09/2003 20:17

Kaz, just one night getting them both to bed is leaving me frazzled and reaching new heights of admiration for you.

DP has gone off to posh mate's 'stag' do. Which is costing him £75, and for which he has to wear a suit. What is wrong with this picture??

Finally managed to come online again, as I am trying to use my "baby free" time going to the gym and I am then too shattered to log in.

The good news is that I have lost 3 pounds (courtesy of slimming club too), I was a bit disappointed though as last time I tried to loose weight (I was a lot younger) I would loose it a lot faster.

thanks for the advice KMS and Kaz, not sure ds is teething as he doesn't seem in pain, he's got his hands constantly in his mouth and he's dribbling all over the place, but sleep is ok and is not crying (thank God!), I shall wait and see if any tooth appears soon.

Ladies, I am impressed! You still manage to look after your older children with a baby and no partner around...well done!
I still feel such a novice
Everything is still trial and error, I am really relieve that mumsnet exists!!!

motherinferior · 07/09/2003 10:42

Happyspider, DEEPEST respect for getting to the gym. That's what's out of the window for me!

My dd2 is chomping away at her paws too, but in her case it isn't teeth - it's part of the exploration of their hands/fingers/thumbs they do, and I recognise it from dd1. Yours may be doing the same? It's dead welcome in Casa Inferiore (er, sorry, must stop this cod-Italian, make that Chateau Inferieur) because the sooner she opts for thumb over dummy the sooner we stop having to get up at night to re-dummy her!

The really good news is that overall the night feeds seem really to be going, and day feeds are spacing out quite regularly. I'm particularly concerned about this because of the prospect of going back to work, and leaving enough expressed milk as I can (oh, and breastfeeding's going so much better these days). OTOH I've realised that because this baby was early I have another 8 weeks of maternity leave, and she'll be 19 weeks when she goes to our (wonderful) childminder, so that's calmed me down quite a bit.

But personally it's STILL trial and error for me. Maybe it gets a bit better by the fourth or so!

Well back from parents, fed, DS1 entertained and very happy. New session of tumbletots this morning, swimming on Wednesday - tommorow I am going to take them to the park - I HAVE DECIDED.

Hopefully make it to the weekend and DP's return before DS1 hates me again.

DS2 is definitely teething, flushed cheeks, high pitched screech and unconsolable crying. Just what i need NOT. Also has a cold which as i remembered always seemed to accompany teething. So not much chance of that sleep through the night anytime soon - last night DS2 woke at 2am and wanted to play till 4am. Oh heaven.

At the moment DS1 is asleep and DS2 is in far room of the flat screeching his lungs out - he is fed, clean nappy, is tired and was given Calpol two hours ago so not much I can do but go and cuddle him and I need half an hour to myself before DS1 wakes up and it all starts again.

Welcome to my living hell.

Hi Motherinferior - how is the night feeding going - any better ? DS2 is totally random - some days hardly anything at random times and other times stuffing his face.

Got the lads off tonight DS2 at 7pm ( left him for 10 minutes screaming his head off and then he conked out. Poor mite, bad time to start teething and I couldn't give him any more Calpol ) and DS1 at 7.30pm.

motherinferior · 09/09/2003 11:18

I seem to have cracked feeding between the 10.30ish feed and an EARLY morning one (it was about 5 this morning); but not the dummy. I really hoped she'd get the hang of her thumb but she hasn't quite done so yet!

Ooops, dd1 has just crayoned over half the 'office', including her dad's precious ergononic keyboard. Oh bugger. Cleanup Together time, I suspect...

OP posts:
kaz33 · 09/09/2003 14:24

That sounds great - ds2 still waking at any time between 2-4am. AAAargh.

Made it to Holland Park today, thanks to the lady who held DS2 while i pushed DS1 on the swings.... hard work, DS1 now asleep and DS2 fully awake and balanced on knee being stimulated by computer.

The house is such a tip

motherinferior · 09/09/2003 18:38

Oh, she does wake up. And then rumbles and fidgets and thrashes about and I try to see if she'll find her thumb or fist or anything, really, and then finally stumble out of bed to bung in dummy and wonder if I should feed her anyway.

Took dd1 for her first ever proper haircut today. Looks an absolute angel.

OP posts:
kaz33 · 09/09/2003 19:48

Motherinferior - same as my DS2, why do they wake up? DS2 has found his thumb but that doesn't seem to help. Do you intend to take away the dummy entirely when DD2 finds her thumb ? All new to me as DS1 did not have a dummy.

motherinferior · 10/09/2003 15:13

DD1 found thumb and got progressively less interested in dummy. DD2 shows no sign of real thumb discovery, and was awake for two to three hours rumbling around this morning before I fed her at 6am. Don't know whether I should just pick her up and feed her - she doesn't REALLY wail, and I really want to get out of the constant waking, but at the moment I wake up at 1.30 or so (I think this is more because it's when I've woken up when having bad sleep anyway - after the first few hours) and then at around 3.30, whether or not she's woken already because I'm braced for that, and then when she starts rumbling...

All very VERY exhausting really. Oh god, should go and see what dd1 has managed to destroy now!

kaz33 · 11/09/2003 14:19

Thinkyou should patent the " ? babies" thread - the September girls have just started. You have changed the face of Mumsnet for ever, Motherinferior.

Tonight I am going to put DS2's cot in the lounge so he will really have to wake up to rouse me from my slumber - maybe i'll sleep through the 2.30am wake up.

DP back on Saturday - so his two week trip nearly over. Thankgod.

Dahlia · 11/09/2003 16:02

Hi Girls! Have you missed me? Bloody computer has been playing up but appears to be ok now. dd2 is sleeping well at night (but it changes from week to week) but she still only takes 5oz max. She is finally holding her head up now which is a relief, I was starting to worry. Kaz, I am dreading the start of teething having read all your posts. I really hope it gets better soon for you. xx
