I hope someone else is training too as we can celebrate and commiserate together
since dd got up this morning she has been bare bottomed. i have left the potty out and told her where it is and left her to it mostly.
she has weed on it 4 times, pood on it once and had 1 accident near the potty while eating, she made no attempt to get to the potty and i think she was more bothered about her lunch.
i have done her a tick chart to tick whenever she uses the potty and she loves it, she says tick chart now when she goes.
The only time i intervened was when she hadnt weed for 2hrs 15 mins so i gave her milk and sat her on the potty and she weed.
She is now asleep so ive put her a nappy on and told her its a sleep nappy.
Hopefully some of you will come and join me.
When bare bottomes what do you do when they sit in their highchair etc, i have laid a nappy open in the chair.

oh and so far today one poo in potty, 3 wees and no accidents. she is asleep now with nappy on.
My sister is a nursery nurse and visited me today. she said to put her in pants (which i may do tomorrow) and help her undress every so often and offer potty if she doesnt ask to go. She also said i shouldnt put her in a nappy for naps, just let her sleep on a caremat but she wees 50% of the time during naps so im not sure.

putting them in pants really does work, my eldest was rather slow to train, we'd been trying with training pants for months. As soon as I took away the training pants it just clicked, dry at night and everything.

Foxy800 · 10/04/2009 17:38

Thanks guys, she is holding it in but not all day. Usually for 3 hours max.

We too have a potty in the middle of the room we are in, 1 upstairs and ask her every so often if she wants to go.

She has a sticker chart and we have explained if she has a wee on the potty she can have a chocolate button, 2 for a poo.

jemart I agree with the training pants. Im a nursery nurse and have seen first hand what you are saying.

my only problem with putting dd in pants/trousers is that she cant undress herself so at the moment she says wee runs and does her wee on the potty with not much notice but if she was dressed she would probably wet herself which i thought may put her back a bit.

Know what you mean. Im trying to put Jody into skirts so the only thing she really has to worry about is the pants.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 10/04/2009 19:02

Hi, Can I join in?

Started DS potty training today. This was his first day in pants and we had 1 wee in a potty this afternoon. Gave him a sweetie reward and big cheers from me, DH, granny and granddad.

I'm putting him in a nappy at night but not for naps. Got a mattress protector for the cot. Today he was dry after his nap.

We are going to stay home as much as possible for the first few days of potty training although supposed to go to the zoo on Tuesday!

ilovetochat · 10/04/2009 20:22

well today we had 6 wees and a poo in the potty and no accidents and she said wee or poo 4 out of 6 times beforehand so tomorrow we will try pants and probably have accidents all day.
We have been home 3 days now, aaargh!
need to get dd some skirts, she is inbetween sizes at the moment and she has lots of dresses in the next size up but they are a bit big yet. (and dont want them all ruined with accidents)

We have had a great day, only one accident and everything on the potty. We are finding that if we 'pressure' ds to go (ie ask him if he needs a wee etc) he holds it in, whereas if we leave him to his own devices and don;t mention it he is fine. Still bare bottomed though.

Whenever he does somethimg he says "Say well done!" and if it is a poo we get a description such as "Look, it;s just like a rainbow"

I am enjoying not changing his nappy and having fewer to wash.

ilovetochat · 10/04/2009 21:11

hi provincial, thats exactly like dd, if i ask her if she wants to go she says no but if i leave her to it she gets on with it. I only encourage her when its been a few hours and i know she must need to go. she is lasting 2 1/2 hours between wees so if i kept asking her all the time it would be pointless.

Foxy800 · 10/04/2009 22:04

Maybe that is something I should tryand se how we get on.

WE have had 2 accidents today and nothing on the potty but I have managed to get her to sit on the potty and toilet twice today. She not too happy bout it but did do it so will just keep trying.

hoppybird · 10/04/2009 22:54

May I join in too?

My dd is 2.7, and we started potty training in earnest this week. She's pretty much like your dd, Foxy, inasmuch as she will hold it in for a couple of hours at a time but not actually wee use the potty. I was getting increasingly depressed reading on the thread how everyone else's dc's were actually managing at least a few wees on the potty! However, she absolutely loves sitting on it, she just doesn't have the confidence to actually piddle in it! She'll sit ages on it, ask to read all her potty books, she knows exactly what it is for, she even gets up, asks for toilet paper and practices wiping. I often try to encourage by going myself at the same time, but no success yet. She is aware when she has an accident and has offered to help clean up, which is very sweet.

It's funny how provinciallady and Ilovetochat have said that not reminding their dc's to 'go' is more helpful - when I potty trained my ds (just took a week) and I found that more encouragement was exactly what he needed! Maybe my little dd is the exact opposite. I'll try and hold off reminding her tomorrow, and see if it helps.

Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 09:29

Good luck hoppybird, thats what Im going to try today. And just every few hours try to get her to sit on the potty just to try and get her to like it for now as she knows what it is for, she puts her dolls on it and she also wipes her bum!!!We have had 1 in our sitting room for months!!!
She sat on it for 2 seconds this morning with gentle persuasion, she didnt like it but hopefully the more we do it the more she will use it.
Will keep you posted on how we get on today.

Good luck everyone who is potty training little ones at the moment.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 11/04/2009 13:38

Hi no direct hits so far today for us. DH and I just had a row about whether to give a reward for just sitting on the potty. I say no. DH says yes. Anyway poor DS just worn out and gone for a nap but I am guessing he will wee during his nap and wake himself up!

Oh dear have accidentally eaten a bag of mini eggs with the stress.

Thankfully it is a gorgeous day out so we can be in the garden.

Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 14:40

WE have had no direct hits today either but no accidents either, we went out for an hour this morning so she was in a nappy and we,ed in that though.

However we seem to have taken a very small step forward today in that she keeps wanting to sit on the potty and toilet, not using it though. She even pulled down her knickers once.

I personally have given her the odd sticker for trying as she was completely refusing to sit on it to begin with but not doing that now and given no other rewards for trying like you.

She knows if she does a wee on the potty she gets a chocolate button and 2 for a poo.

Dp's can be a real pain cant they Halfmumhalfbiscuit? My dp keeps telling me its cruel and child abuse to try and make lo sit on the potty (and I dont mean forcing her on it and making her sit there, I mean getting her to sit on it but getting off when she has had enough). I mean for goodness sake how else are they going to learn if we dont try and encourage them and help them!!!

Unfortunately our weather is awful so we are stuck indoors!!!Lo just in knickers and a skirt though.

ilovetochat · 11/04/2009 14:57

hi all,

we have put dd in pants today and she likes them so thats ok. she has used the potty 3 times and no accidents so far but when she wants to wee she just heads for the potty and sits down, i then have to quickly pull her pants down or she would wee through them, so im having to be within ear shot at all times.

We have managed a trip to the park. I didnt put a nappy on as i dont want to confuse her. I just pulled some jogging bottoms on her, easy up/down and took the potty. i times it too so she had just done a wee so probably be ok for a while. she was fine, i reminded her she had no nappy and if she weed she would be wet and she didnt have an accident, success!

I put a caremat thing on the carseat just in case. I have also layed an open nappy in the high chair and told her its a cushion

I have put a nappy on her for her nap again now. is everyone letting them sleep nappy-free?

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 11/04/2009 15:35

Foxy800 it is tricky getting DP's to stick to the plan. Unfortunately now DS is demanding sweeties just for sitting on the potty and won't go on it without. So plan has back fired. He hasn't done a wee for ages which is suspicious.

DS did not wee during his nap. He wasn't in a nappy either. I have been putting a nappy on him at night though.

Going to get him a drink now to see if that moves things along!

Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 16:03

I know what you mean about not weeing for ages.We have been home since about 1130am ans although she has been sitting on the potty so far she has done nothing on the potty and had no accidents. She has even walked to oour local shops with no nappy on.

WE are only putting nappies on to go out and to go to bed.

Just getting a little concerned about how long she is going especially as she hasnt pooed for 2 days either!!!!

She is like a different child too at the moment, just having strop after strop!!!!

Just going to keep trying and hope she gets better.

I guess she has taken a step forward by actually sitting on the potty and toilet, just need to get her using them now!!

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 11/04/2009 16:34

We have just had worlds biggest wee - on the sofa of course. Then he sat on potty for 15 mins but nothing [exasperated emoticon].

He is now back playing outside in his pants.

No poo here for 2 days either!

He stropped a bit earlier but it was because he was really tired. I think the change in routine is probably a bit of a shock to their delicate toddler systems and making them grumpy.

Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 17:05

Thats what Im hoping it is too halfmumhalfbiscuit.

Well we still havent done anything at all!!!!

Its a lot for them to take in isnt it? After all they have been used to nappies since they were born.

Im quite proud of her though, it was only a short walk earlier, we were out about 30 minutes in total and she stayed dry the whole time.

ilovetochat · 11/04/2009 17:08

when dd had an accident and i was there i quickly put her on the potty so i caught some and praised her for getting some in the potty. now if she starts to wee she runs and finishes on the potty which is better than just standing watching it happen, might be worth a try

OP posts:
Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 17:39

Up till now that wouldnt of worked but now she is starting to sit on it I can give that ago.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

TheProvincialLady · 11/04/2009 19:08

We have had no accidents at all today so that is fantastic - though ds did wear a nappy to the cinema (poor boy has been stuck indoors for too long now and the trip had been planned for ages). He did have a wee in thew nappy but not much and interestingly as soon as the nappy came off he sat on the potty and had a huge wee. So maybe he is starting to prefer it now? Still bare bottomed though = we are leaving pants until next week when he has really got the hang of heading for the potty in plenty of time.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 11/04/2009 19:17

ilovetochat that is a good idea re catching the end of a wee in the potty.

Foxy800 the dry walk is a good sign!

Just had a classic. DS was helping me in the kitchen and was all excited about making rice crispy buns. Just as the chocolate hit the crispies I heard a fountain-like noise and he was doing the worlds most massive wee all down the kitchen cupboard door and floor and chair. Thank God my mum was about to mop up otherwise it would have been a slippery chocolatey disaster. Unfortunately he was stood on a chair mid cooking so no chance of getting to the potty.

Anyway a few hours later he sat on the potty for ages whilst watching tv and did a wee. Cheers all round and very proud with himself. Time for bed now and we'll see how we do tomorrow.

TheProvincialLady · 11/04/2009 19:20

I just want to add that I tried potty training with DS about a month ago and it was a disaster, wee everywhere and whilst he would sit on the potty for hours he wouldn't do anything there. So don't feel that if it isn't going well at the moment that you have to carry on or they will never do it - DS seems to get it this time and is genuinely keen to do it, which he wasn't last time looking back.

Foxy800 · 11/04/2009 19:48

Halfmumhalfbiscuit we had a similar experience earlier.

Dd hadnt been all afternoon despite sitting on the potty/toilet then we went up to get ready for a bath and bless her just as she was walking into the bathroom she weed everywhere bless her. Tried to get her on potty but she had finished it by the time she sat on it.

She is in bed now so will see how we get on tomorrow.

Good luck everyone who is potty training at the moment.
