I have bought lots of single this and a few of that, different sizes and types. I figure till we get to see their size, length, build, long term feeding plan, heavy wetter/lots of little wee's, how we will do the washing - nightly or every second and so on and so it's not worth risk of buying loads of the wrong sort!!

I've got nearly all used and so if some prove totally useless to me I haven't lost too much.

Sandy's and wraps seem loved by all. The wraps in particular.

babyjjbaby · 01/01/2009 21:52

any ideas need rid as need th espace lol

4andnotout · 01/01/2009 21:53

I wouldn't get small itti's as they are tiny! Go for mediums and use the smallest setting, other than that you have chosen fairly sound choices. I also recommend buying 2nd hand it works out a lot cheaper.

Yes, I got that advice fron the rep at the baby show. Bought one med green and am loving it. Would love a job lot [no chance].

ceb80 · 01/01/2009 21:59

Was def gonna go 2nd hand where possible. Am lucky as we have a real nappy shop in town that does 2nd hand.

Good tip about ittis thanks

Forgot to ask if anyone uses modern baby pop in nappies, think they might be quite new but look quite similar to Bumgenius.

4andnotout · 01/01/2009 22:05

I have some coming have tried them before and they are good, i adore bumgenius onesizes as i have 2 babies in nappies so only need one sort of nappy in the nappybag!
Im very of an actual nappyshop, where i live (norfolk) there is no such thing

ceb80 · 01/01/2009 22:11

Well I'm Suffolk which is not known for it's modern thinking so was pleasantly surprised! Shop is in a slightly dodgy area of town but the lady is really knowledgable and very nice.

Did you use reusables from day 1? Some people do and others don't as apparently the poo stains your lovely nappies to begin with!

AlienSwampMonster · 01/01/2009 22:12

I am in love with my (large) Itti Bittis and my BumGenius BTP V3 - plus I have some newborn and small Sandy's waiting in the wings for the arrival of DS3 in February so I applaud your choices, ceb80.

From what I've read of the small and medium Itti Bittis, the advice seems to be skip the small and go straight for medium as babies soon fit in them as they are so trim.

Same with the Sandy's, really, the newborn ones are sooooooo minute (but cute as!). If you have a big baby s/he'd be out of them before you could say 'meconium' - and you might just want to wait til your baby has stopped pooing meconium before you start with washables? Maybe get half newborn Sandy's and half small which you can use more as night nappies to start with as a size up will be much more absorbent?

Like every other cloth nappy user, I love Airflow wraps, but for nights I much prefer fleece (Stacinators in particular).

Best advice? Start slowly. If you are like most of the posters here you will end up having tried at least one of every imaginable nappy and be well up on the pros and cons of each.

thebluefoxategreensocks · 01/01/2009 22:12

rusmum: Do you give your nappies a prewash/rinse before doing them at 60 degrees? I have never used Sandys, so can't speak for them in particular...but I was getting lots of problems with smelly nappies and never thought of the idea of a prewash/rinse....after nearly 3 years of cloth nappies! duh! LOL So first I started doing them on a prewash first, and then a prewash as well as a rinse/spin (since my machine's prewash only gives them water once - and I think the rinse/spin cycle of 15 min or so gives water twice), so now I'm just doing the rinse/spin cycle and then washing them on a time saver 60 degree wash and they come out lovely & fresh...just using 2 tablespoons of cheap non-bio. Of course, you might already be doing this - but worth saying anyway, I hope.

AlienSwampMonster · 01/01/2009 22:13

Ooooooh, this thread moved on while I was composing!

ceb80 · 01/01/2009 22:18

No worries ASM I did rather come in and hijack, glad to know I have made some good choices! What do you prefer about the fleece wraps?
Stupid question alert, roughly how long is the meconium stage?

4andnotout · 01/01/2009 22:20

I used cloth from day one (well about 36hours old) with all 4, i used paper liners for merconium and just cheap muslins and terry squares until the dreaded orange bf poo started

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 22:23

Thats what I was going to do 4, use tiny nappies that won't last long anyway, and are second hand and such great value due to the generosity of mumsnetters!! I'm not looking to recoup costs by selling on, and dd will no doubt grow out of them sharpish anyway, so may as well jump in!

Not letting my itti bitti any where near her till we're on fully changed poo of no noxious value!

Befanasflower · 01/01/2009 22:24

KOMH - it's sunflower78/xmasflower etc (kep on changing but always the same theme really ... sorry to hear no success with nappies, hope rash has cleared though...

ceb80 - nice selection there. only had 4 nb sandy's, but I had bamboo small ones and so used them from wk 4 (I think, , should go back on old thread and I'd find out.)

you all got me lusting after these ittis now... you bad people, you know I've got an addictive personality when it comes to nappies!!!

AlienSwampMonster · 01/01/2009 22:28

Meconium only lasts a few days. But I am still traumatised by it.

Fleece is just lovely and soft and breathable. It allows for a lot of evaporation so they don't seem so sodden in the morning.

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 22:29

Fleece best when their mobile is that right?

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 22:31

Completely off nappies but I know someone is out there so can I just say....

Isn't it a pig when your dh/dp takes the remote to the other couch to flick over - then leaves it there, with crap on the tv, to go spend a manly half hour in the loo doing what ever it is they do in there.
Was just nicley comfy with laptop and now I have to move! TUT!

ilovelovemydog · 01/01/2009 22:35

Treedelivery - your DH gets off the couch? Mine has been horizontal for hours, but in his defence, he had knee surgery yesterday....

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 22:37

He does - but mainly to go to the loo.

Befanasflower · 01/01/2009 22:56

LOL at DHs and loo... when DS asks where daddy is, I always say to him "where do you think?" so he knows he's in the toilet (otherwise known as the throne)

Essie3 · 01/01/2009 22:57

Happy new year all!
I didn't use reusables until DS was about 4 weeks old, but he was teeny at birth and too small for them. If I had the pop-ins, I would have started sooner. Also, DS's meconium was a one-off onto a hospital towel which a nurse had to help with because DH was still emotional after the birth (cunning fox he is!).
Mind you, half of it was in my waters before he came out...

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 22:58

Mine too!! She charges in and demands 'Daddy, are you there again? You're always making poo poo smells and noises'

So true!

ilovelovemydog · 01/01/2009 23:02

Am getting all broody thinking of DS in his Sandy's Extra Small . He was done with being tar baby at about 3 days? He was soooo cute in his little Sandy's. And little safari wraps.

How can I be broody with a 10 month old?

4andnotout · 01/01/2009 23:02

ESSIE Did the transfer go ok your end ?

treedelivery · 01/01/2009 23:08

ilovemydog - you can't, and should drink no alcohol or go to bed in anything other than a knackered state or you KNOW whats gonna happen......
