Do we have an OU support thread and if not, shall we?

Cos studying with the OU, esp around kids, is soooooo hard

I am preparing to do S205 (The Molecular World). I cannot get my head around thermodynamics. I need about 2 hours just to sit with NO DISTRACTIONS but between 3 HE'd kids and a partner who works daft hours I am not getting a chance.

Also I cannot for the life of me remember WHY I am doing this

Ooh Marslady - you are studying for the same degree that I want to eventually get to! How are you finding it?

MarsLady · 07/02/2009 16:23

I have completely loved studying with the OU. I took breaks to have the children and so it wasn't a quick (lol) 6 years but it has been about 10. I love it.

I'm so sad that they've gotten rid of so many summer schools. They were the highlight (plus the cheap student bar)! Now they are moving the timetable round so there's no space for summer school anymore. My best summer school was for the Shakespeare course. I met and have kept some wonderful friends from there.

I hope you continue to enjoy it!

I've done a couple of short science courses, and I started S104 back in september, but I have had to take advantage of the interrupted study scheme as I was really struggling with making the time to study.
Hence the reason why I am back on here all the time

shall we start a thread??

ShrinkingViolet · 07/02/2009 17:40

Can i join you? I've got 80 points under my belt, but got a letter last week to say that the modular Certificate of Management I'd started was finishing next year, and if I wanted to finishe it, I'd need to get a move on (or words to that effect ). Which has given me a spur on to register for the remaining modules, and plan the rest of my degree (BSc). I'm just wondering what I could do between now and August to get me back in the swing of it all again.

I'm really struggling to get started on my new course (I'm doing DD308 and this is my fourth year). Got a tutorial on Saturday, so I'm definitely going to attend that and hope it gives me the kick up the arse I need

orangehead · 10/02/2009 23:58

Hi, I'm doing EK310. Its my fourth course and my first level 3, so thats a bit scarey. I noticed a few of you are doing Ed209, I did that last year. Do you know about Erica Coxs revision packs. They are really worth it, I will get a link.

By the way am not going to comment on the standard of oral as I am burying my head in the sand about that - you didnt say that - I didnt hear it - so all will be ok !!!!

Hi I'm studying MST209, and now 12 weeks pregnant with my 2nd. I had 2 mc's last year while studying MST121 ans MS221, even having one of the mc's during the exam in October, but I passed. I'm worried this time as baby is due 6 weeks before exam, if it's mid October as usual. I'm trying to get ahead with this course, but it's so hard staying awake , any advice?

frannikin · 18/02/2009 22:00

I really need to get restarted...and keep going this time. Anyone else get demotivated really easily?!

Molesworth · 19/02/2009 09:40

Me too frannikin. I seem to be finding it harder each year (this is my fourth) for some reason. I had to drop a course in 2007 because I'd taken on too much and the course was so difficult (trying to run before I could walk), and that dented my confidence. I did manage to complete my course last year, but the doubts linger and that affects my motivation aaaarghh

frannikin · 19/02/2009 13:17

I always do this to myself - 2 weeks of really enthusiastic hard work, thinking it's really interesting and then I get distracted...and the books sit there....and they gaze at me malevonlently and I know I ought to do some work but there's always something more important. Like ironing.

Molesworth · 19/02/2009 17:34

Once I dismantled my computer keyboard, washed and then dried it with a hairdryer in a desperate bid to avoid studying

Crazy self-defeating behaviour isn't it?!

CatchaStar · 19/02/2009 19:01

I currently have dd lifting up my top, and blowing rasberries onto my left hip. And now she's just bitten said hip = ouch.

And I wonder why I have managed to do naff effing all!

babbi · 24/02/2009 14:55

Molesworth I am so delighted that someone else goes to such efforts to avoid studying as well !!
As I said on an earlier post friends can always tell as soon as they enter my house if I am overdue to study or hand an assignment in !!
House is pristine and homebaking and cooking elaborate recipes from scratch are all the rage !!!!

Molesworth · 28/02/2009 00:26

babbi

Alas, I hate housework so much that I'll find ever more pointless creative ways to avoid studying and remain lazy.

I researched my family tree last year instead of revising, for example!

leothelioness · 09/03/2009 03:08

oh the procrastination I had a decent head start on my current course as I am doing 2 summer schools in July but guess what it look less than a month to go from being ahead to a week behind the study calander.

CatchaStar · 10/03/2009 15:10

Hello all, hope you're all ok!

Just thought I'd celebrate my news - I passed my first assignment fo U212 (Childhood) and got an unexpected 60%

Currently working towards my first TMA for ED209 (Child development) which needs to be in for the 13th! Think I'm on the right path with it

Dd now having a nap so it's beautifully quiet without cbeebies blasting in the background to distract me. I'm begining to loath the bloody programme! Have also managed 4 loads of washing as it's a lovely sunny day, really wanted to go out for a walk with dd as it's so nice, but studies call

pumpkinsoup · 10/03/2009 17:42

well done!

How are you finding the course? (Childhood)

That must be loads of work - Childhood, Child Development (and a child)!

leothelioness · 11/03/2009 05:44

By the way is anyone on here doing the same course as me I am doing S204 unity and diversity.

CatchaStar · 12/03/2009 18:24

Thanks pumpkin!

Am really happy I passed, considering I've been out of uni for 21 months now I'm so pleased I managed to do the assignment, especially as I was so out of practice lol!

Have finshed and sent my first etma for child development today which I think I've managed to do quite well....I think. We shall see. My confidence in it will probably mean I've done it all wrong!

I'll be honest and say I'm not finding it as hard as I will, because at the mintue it's the easier assignments it's not too bad, but they'll get progressively harder as the courses go on. The only thing I find difficult is managing my time during the day with an extremely active toddler at my feet! But I find the OU materials so good that it's just a case of read, learn and write

Surprisingly I'm enjoying child development more, it's an area that really interests me so am enjoying learning about it all. Childhood is just like being back in my first year, it's all ringing a bell lol.

It's just 2 assignments every month so very managable, it's getting motivated that's the problem a lot of the time!

Molesworth · 13/03/2009 23:56

Congrats catchastar

I've just submitted the first TMA for my course (had to get an extension, so not the best of starts)

juneybean · 19/03/2009 17:58

I just got my mark back and it was a 48, I'm absolutely gutted Need some picking up and shaking about?

Molesworth · 19/03/2009 22:18

oh juney, I'm sorry to hear that
