Do we have an OU support thread and if not, shall we?

Cos studying with the OU, esp around kids, is soooooo hard

I am preparing to do S205 (The Molecular World). I cannot get my head around thermodynamics. I need about 2 hours just to sit with NO DISTRACTIONS but between 3 HE'd kids and a partner who works daft hours I am not getting a chance.

Also I cannot for the life of me remember WHY I am doing this

All finished - Thank goodness

Now I have 8000 words to be in by 8th March

HandleMeCarefully · 25/01/2009 20:54

OOOOh Nicecupoftea! I am currently doing AA100 (started in Oct and finish end of May)...

muppetgirl · 25/01/2009 21:00

fab x

I've got an experiment to do and report to write of 2000 words by the 11th feb but can't get started due to tutor not having given us our marked assignments back!!!!! We had a tutorial last sat and he said he would have them ready for us to collect the friday just gone and it's now sunday. I hate it when they give you a day as I can't focus until I know how I've done.

leothelioness · 26/01/2009 01:38

Hi muppetgirl welcome to the maddness. I did DSE212 a couple of years ago too. Good luck with your experiment write up.

babbi · 26/01/2009 23:36

Hi Evansmummy , yes I am still around - hiding under the blankets - really hoping the TMA`s etc will go away !!!
How are you ??
Have decided this evening and have chatted through with Dh a kind of timetable where I will be without DD (he can take her out etc).
I must get started on the course materials to try to alleviate some of the panic that I am feeling !!
It is always obvious in my house when I am dodging studying - the whole house is gleaming , laundry and ironing fully up to date , as I search around for all those things that simply must be done "before I settle down to get the books out !! "
Honestly wish I could get a grip of myself, I just know if I got on with things instead of employing delay tactics I might actually feel a bit more confident !!

Hope you are well and rested ready for the off !!

Good luck , I will be sure to keep in touch !

KatyMac · 27/01/2009 07:48

Last TMA done now I have to do 8000 words of an ECA (starting it without feed back from the TMA, which seems a bit unfair)

ChopsTheDuck · 27/01/2009 08:07

Can I join?

Just got confirmation yesterday that all registered for my last law course, starting 6th feb. Bit worried considering it's taken me 4 months to do the registration, how on earth am I actually going to do the course!

This wasn't helped by actually deciding to read the course description today and the reviews stating it is a nightmare. So now I'm really dreading starting. Last year I got so tetchy and stressed and shouty, I'm going to have to find ways of keeping stress levels down this time.

ChopsTheDuck · 27/01/2009 08:08

what's an eca, katymac?

KatyMac · 27/01/2009 08:33

No totally sure - feel a bit the same at the number of words (& this is level 1)

Could it be 'End of Course Assignment' maybe (pure guess btw)

NiceCupOfTea · 27/01/2009 09:31

HandleMeCarefully!!!!!!!!!!

How's the course going? Tell me all about everything you've done so far so i can know what to expect - is the workload ok?

muppetgirl · 27/01/2009 11:17

I passed my 2nd assignment!!!

WOOHHOOOOO

...now settles down to start no 3
[grin

KatyMac · 27/01/2009 12:03

Congratulations

HandleMeCarefully · 27/01/2009 12:29

Hi Nicecup,

I've found the workload very manageable - but then I am a SAHM with school age children. I rarely work at the weekends or in the evening - I probably do about 10 hours per week in total whilst the kids are at school (more if an assignment is looming).

The course is very enjoyable - a broad subject. I love that we have been doing art history, poetry and literature as well as more conventional history. So far have done 3 TMAs and 4th is due in about 10 days. Assignments have covered Cleopatra, Cezanne, Poetry and the Dalai Lama (next one is on Ireland). I hope you'll love it as much as I am

NiceCupOfTea · 27/01/2009 13:05

Cheers, HandleMe

I'm really looking forward to starting next month, it looks like a very comprehensive humanities foundation course. Mind you, a week per subject looks a bit speedy for snail-like me. Is there enough time to take it all in before writing the TMAs? And tell me about the tutorials/day schools you've been to (if any) - are they helpful? I'm planning to sign up for level 2 A210 Approaching Literature starting this October, which should be pretty intense. Which course are you doing next?

MarsLady · 27/01/2009 13:08

You'll be fine Chops! You know you will. Glad you've registered. Go girl!

HandleMeCarefully · 27/01/2009 20:58

There is enough time NiceCup, and you can always skip the odd chapter if you fall behind. I skipped both the Diva and Plato because neither have an assignment related to them and I needed to time manage (after doing very little during the Pre-Christmas rush)

My next course is Exploring History Medieval to Modern - plan is to get a History degree. Good luck with it all....

sandy4 · 01/02/2009 21:31

Is anyone studying W200 (understanding law)??

I completed W100 last year & start W200 tomorrow .

Had mad ideas of becoming a lawyer, then realised it's a tad difficult studying & juggling family (3DCs) so have decided to do it for 'fun' & see where it gets me.

evansmummy · 03/02/2009 08:21

babbi, i know what you mean. It's my first time on an OU course and I've only just started but I am already finding it interesting that I think I have the time to do this and that around the houes rather than getting down to study! Must be more regimented in my approach!

Went onto Lyceum for the first time last night, very interesting! Hopefully will meet some great people, I was surprised that the level of oral French was so high! Am looking forward to my first tutorial in a couple weeks time.

So have you started actual studying yet? How far have you got? How you finding it?

MarsLady · 03/02/2009 12:48

evansmummy... which French course are you doing? I didn't think that there was a level 3 French course (or maybe I didn't pay it enough attention as I knew I didn't have the time for another language course). I did the first two and loved them. Reading about you doing French is making think of taking it up again next year when I've more time. I finish my Creative Writing in May (and the degree) but this study bug has bitten me bad! lol

evansmummy · 04/02/2009 18:42

I'm doing L310 Nouvelles Mises en Point. Only just started but loving it already! My first ime with the OU, so I'm still in the 'honeymoon period'. Really looking forward to getting more into Lyceum to chat with people!

MarsLady · 04/02/2009 22:21

I just looked at that. I knew I didn't have the time to dedicate to it so have put off applying. Let me know how you go. You may find you continue to enjoy it even when the honeymoon is over!

Frasersmum123 · 05/02/2009 18:02

Hiya everyone

Can I join in - I havent officially started yet, but am due to start AA100 in October.

Reading through gives me a great idea of what I am letting myself in for!
