My DP is Welsh, but only knows a handful of phrases... but I know that there are a couple he would to know.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me how to say (and write)

"I love you"
"Good Girl"
"Well Done"

Thankyou oodles. Thankyou and disgusting are about the extent of my knowledge!!! Ooh, and "big pit"... the joys of road signs...

Dwi'n dy garu di

Hogan dda

Da iawn!!!

Where is he from fs?

tiptop · 17/03/2005 22:32

I love you = Dwi'n dy garu di

Good girl = Merch dda

Well done = Da iawn

flamesparrow · 17/03/2005 22:33

Is there any chance you can write it in speakable for me too . I had one Welsh lesson during English Lit at college, and that is the extent of my knowledge... I have a feeling we were reading biscuit packets!!!

Lovely mad Welsh woman!!!

Anyway... DP is from Cwmbach, Aberdare. He's been here since he was 18 (26 now), just going home to visit family, but still has soo much accent. Its lovely, B has a slight welsh tinge to her few words.

And before anyone panics... she is being raised to support Wales in rugby

Hi, moondog! You can explain the difference between merch and hogan. You'd do it better than me.

flamesparrow · 17/03/2005 22:34

I was wondering about that... didn't know if it was a north/south divide thing!!!

OP posts:
tiptop · 17/03/2005 22:40

I'll have a go.....

I love you = Dwi'n dy garu di. dween dee gar (as in Gareth) ree dee.

Good girl = Merch dda. That's so hard to do! moondog will do it, I'm sure!

Well done = Da iawn. Da (as in darkness)yee aw oooh nn.

This isn't much good, but I've tried! I think you need to speak to someone on the phone to get the speed and stuff, though. To say it and be corrected until you've got it, so to speak.

moondog · 17/03/2005 22:42

Ok...

dween duh garry dee

Hogan dda ('dd' as in 'the')

Dah yown (to rhyme with 'gown')

To me, merch and hogan are just north/south things. Dh (Aberteifi) would say former, me the latter.

God the match!!! I'm going to a wedding on Saturday. Imagine that half the guests will be sneaking out of the reception in the hotel and going to the public bar!

moondog · 17/03/2005 22:42

tiptop..where are you from?

tiptop · 17/03/2005 22:48

moondog - Ger Castell Nedd. Where is the wedding? Aren't you over the water at the moment? I have family from Aberteifi! Some of my long losts had the name Tivey and I always pronounced it Teifi without thinking. Then, when I met them, I realised that they pronounced it Tivvey. When I looked into their part of the family tree, I discovered that they were from Aberteifi. They'd moved around the 1600s to Staffs/Derbys and changed the name to suit.

Sorry for the hi-jack flamesparrow!

tiptop · 17/03/2005 22:51

Merch = m (rolled) er (as in Erica) ch (the gutteral (?) sound)

My attempt!

moondog · 17/03/2005 22:52

Back in Caernarfon now!!! Wedding is here.
(Interesting about the name change. My mother is from staffordshire! Just phoned her. She has a Welsh exam tomorrow (after 40 years of hearing us three speak it with my father she decided to ha ve formal lessons!) and is sh**ing bricks!
Shes has also entered the Eisteddfod this year (Pabell y Dysgwyr)

You go Mom!!!

tiptop · 17/03/2005 23:00

I'm down the road in Arystth. We had a wedding a couple of months back in S Wales. It was perishing cold but was dry. I have some excellent Staffs/Derbys surnames in my family tree. Do you have any Orpe, Whetton, Litton or Newbolds in your family? Good on your Mum for having lessons. I seem to be recovering from ME and I'll go back to learning once I'm better. Ds is going to a Welsh medium secondary school and I need to know more. He took part in the Eisteddfod on Anglesey last year in the Can Actol on stage. He was on the tv for about a minute several times, too! He loved it. Neither he or dd got through this year, so we're not going to the Eisteddfod in Cardiff in the May half term now. Good luck to your Mum in her competition.

moondog · 17/03/2005 23:03

Thanks! I'll tell her!
Mostly Baileys and Shufflebothams in my family (lol!!)
Bummer about the ME..
Dh, went to the welsh Ag. College in A'wyth (before meeting me at uni).
Reckoned he didn't have a woman the whole time he was there....aaah!!!!!!!!
(Made up for it once he got to Bangor though!!!)

We were young and wild ......once!!!
Sigh.....
