Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

Luxe50 · Today 09:16

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

You sound like the evil stepmother from Grimm's fairy tales, OP.

Zanatdy · Today 11:13

Of course a quick call to his daughter is fine, perfectly normal.

susiedaisy1912 · Today 11:13

Her dad has just got married to you, that’s a big adjustment for a little girl. Of course she wants to speak to him for reassurance that she still matters to her daddy. Don’t get in the way of their relationship.

It’s just a phone call.

I guess she has just started in the role, and hopefully the responses on this thread might engender a re-think on the Op's part. Let's hope so, for the sake of that little girl.

Bloody hell.

Yes, your DH should be able to speak to his daughter whenever they want to. This is normal and highly unlikely his ex is trying to intrude on your holiday, particularly when she's away herself.

His daughter is only 9 so it will probably just be a quick chat about something exciting she's seen on holiday, what he's seen etc. If DS is with his dad for more than 1 night, he asks me to call him every night. When he's with me, he has the option to call his dad whenever he wants to; he doesn't even need to ask.

Dandeloosha · Today 11:15

Oh come on, why wouldn’t he want to speak to his own daughter? Why wouldn’t his daughter want to have a chat with her own dad? Completely normal - and unless you have him tied to the bed for 24 hours a day there’s no reason why he can’t sit back and have a nice long call.

"Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break?"

Who cares if it is? He should take any opportunity to be there for his child. If you care about him you would be supporting that, not acting like a jealous child yourself.

Be very careful about forcing him to choose between you and his daughter, especially for something as trivial as a 10 minute call. If he is a remotely decent father, you will lose, and rightly so.

I think being territorial as a new wife, when the first family is still under the age of 15 is a very bad start indeed.

Having said that, I'm just assuming the 9 yr old belongs to a first family. It could be part of a second family, or third.

Oh good luck with that attitude 😚
Imagine competing for attention with a 9 year old as a grown arse woman.

if you are THAT jealous and insecure, perhaps you shouldn't have chosen a pre-love husband? It's done now, you mad your bed.

I hope you will be kind and welcoming at all times to your step daughter.

Step mother here, you're being a dick about this. It's one phone call. Your new husband is a father and it's totally normal and positive for him to communicate with his daughter.

Maybe his daughter's mum is wanting to interupt your honeymoon but one phone call during your trip isn't wild. It's wilder that you'd question it and concerns me for your marriage ahead.

I think a brief call is absolutely reasonable, especially for a 9-year-old. It doesn’t have to interrupt your honeymoon or take away from your time together—just a few minutes to say hello and let her know her dad is thinking about her. At that age, hearing from a parent can be reassuring when they’re away on holiday too. I wouldn’t automatically see it as the ex trying to interrupt your break; it could simply be about what feels normal and comforting for the child. You can still enjoy your honeymoon while making a little space for her. ❤️

aberturret · Today 11:28

I’d think twice about marrying a man who would happily go a week without speaking to his kid, tbh.

HoppingPavlova · Today 11:29

Yes, and he should be speaking to her more than once a week no matter where is! I’d think a good chat 3 times a week in this situation would be entirely normal. How is this interrupting or disturbing you? Surely, even on honeymoon you don’t spend every minute together. You seem to have very odd expectations.

mtobrokeme · Today 11:29

Well, yes, he should speak to the person most important to him in the world while he’s in his holiday.

Boringmel · Today 11:29

I'm sure she could "manage" without speaking to her dad for a week, but why should she have to? She needs reassurance that she is still important to him. She will always have known him for longer than you have.

Be careful - your attitude suggests you are going the right way to set up permanent problems for your husband, his daughter and yourself.

QueenofDestruction · Today 11:30

violetcuriosity · Today 09:18

Yes, this is normal. He is her Dad first, your husband second. Forever.

That is not true if you have a good marriage once children are adults they are not always first, your marriage is your primary relationship as it should be for your adult children. Anyway its not a competition for family there are more people who can be important and take precedence depending on spefic circumstances each time. Anyway to OP its normal for kids to want to speak to their parent when they are away.
