Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

Luxe50 · Today 09:16

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

Oh and she isn't 'our Stepdaughter'. She's your Husband's Daughter, and YOUR Stepdaughter. I feel fucking sorry for her to be honest, if this is how you feel already.

TiggyTomCat · Today 10:47

You won't understand a parent/child relationship until you become a parent yourself. I didn't but I do now. It brings out emotions you didn't know you had.

A small child wanting to talk with her Dad during the course a holiday spent apart is a normal emotion.

Wow aren't you a peach OP.

What on earth is your problem?

Poor little girl. This doesn’t bode well.

NileLotus · Today 10:48

This slightly reminds me of when my ex and his wife pretended they were going on honeymoon to a place with a huge time difference so he wouldn't be able to speak to our daughter. She doesn't speak to them at all now.

Katey83 · Today 10:48

Yes it’s normal for a child to want to speak to their parent. Good luck OP step-parenting is not for the faint hearted! (Ignore the weirdos saying ‘he is dad first husband second’ ‘he loves her more’ etc. It is a very different feeling being a spouse to being a parent and not a competition between you).

Nah, I don't have kids but I have some common sense, empathy, and memory of being a child myself.

Tablesandchairs23 · Today 10:51

She's little girl who wants to speak to her Dad. What's wrong with you.

EveryoneUsingOutro · Today 10:51

You better wise up fast that’s all I’ll say.

Tanyasfatmate · Today 10:52

You're the sort of woman that gives stepmothers a bad name.
Congratulations on driving a wedge between dad and daughter:If you even need to ask this question on an internet forum, he'll have picked up on your resentment toward his child. If he's as weak as most men in this position, he'll scale back his time with her, the bond between them will wither and he'll be all yours!!

Strawberry53 · Today 10:52

Wow just wow. Yes it’s normal for a nine year old girl to want to speak to her Dad when they’re apart for a week and it shows good co-parenting for them to be able to arrange this. Like it or not you are part of a blended family now so I’d really think about if this is the approach you want to take as a step mum, immediately assuming the mother of his kid is trying to interfere in your honeymoon. It comes across as very self absorbed. He is a dad before he’s anything else, that’s just the deal when you bring kids into the world.

100% this! There are lots of things about parenting that people without kids might legitimately find it hard to understand but given we've all been kids the desire of a child to very occasionally speak to their parent isn't one of them

PurpleThistle7 · Today 10:55

I think they should talk to each other every day if she wants to. How odd she had to ask her mum to set it up.

Stormyrose · Today 10:56

Wow this is really dismaying , how can you object to him calling his child, and think it’s about his ex wife? What’s wrong with you?

WildLeader · Today 10:57

The DD probably wants to show her dad her holiday and see his.

have you spoken to your new H about your reluctance for him to speak to his child while you’re on holiday @Luxe50

as someone who got married a few weeks ago to a man with adult dd who he speaks to most days, I’m fairly confident he’ll message them while we’re on our honeymoon later in the year

i almost hope you have voiced your insane thoughts to him so he realises just what a mistake he’s made.

your jealousy is pathetic.

GottaBeStrong · Today 10:57

Why aren't you encouraging him to call her? When I got with my ex, he had a daughter and I had no children. I always encouraged the relationship as I didn't want to get in the way. I wanted her to have the same access she had to her father before I came along.

DysmalRadius · Today 10:59

TBH though, shame on the man who married someone who thinks like this. He has brought this lack of compassion into his daughter's life, someone whose first thought on marriage is that they will try and undermine contact between a father and daughter to serve the narrative that the ex must be trying to interfere in their relationship.

So if he has chosen the OP, and married her knowing that she thinks small kids should just suck up lack of contact with their parents to enable the adults to have a holiday without unwelcome reminders of their responsibilities, then it's on him if the OPs attitude impacts his daughter.

Applesonthelawn · Today 11:05

You are unreasonable to think that your dh cannot talk to his child whenever he or the child want a chat. You sound very precious about your honeymoon - the child is far more important and always will be.

Schoolchoicesucks · Today 11:07

A brief call with his 9 year old daughter? What is the problem with that? Half an hour out of the honeymoon week. For his child. Of course she can "manage" a week without speaking to him but why should she have to? Why should he have to?

Strawberrydelight78 · Today 11:08

If you didn’t want the inconvenience of your husband phoning his child while abroad. You shouldn’t have married a man with a child. But you have so just suck it up.

KookyFish · Today 11:08

WTF, is it worlds shittest women on mumset this morning? Between this and my husband doesn't earn enough its a shit show of embarrassing women.

Op isn't going to come back to this thread

Very wise IMO. If I'd posted something this wrong on every level I too would not come back.
Kind of makes you wonder really.

EmailsaysOOO · Today 11:09

Yes, I don't think he should ignore his daughter.

Unless you just had a shotgun wedding in Vegas with the nightporter, I'm assuming you actually do realise what the basics of parenting involve.

It is frightening the number of men who allow women to come between them and their dc. There was even a thread the other day where money had been loaned money to the Sdd and the SM was then was crowing about the fact she had encouraged the father to report the DD for fraud because she had lied about why she needed it.

I mean she was wrong to lie, but when you are encouraging a father to report his own DD over a couple of thousand, rather than seeking to get the relationship back on track, you know you have well and truly "won" the bond-breaking game.
