Dinner at my house has been a straight-up circus lately. One kid just announced they’re going vegan, my youngest is deep in that “plain pasta or chicken nuggets, nothing else” phase, my husband acts personally insulted if I put leftovers on his plate, and my middle one can’t do dairy. So I’m over here squinting at food labels like I’m trying to crack a code. Most nights, I’m running three short-order menus and just hoping at least one person actually eats. I cannot be the only mom barely hanging on here, right?

Between picky eaters, allergies, diet trends, and the grocery list that never ends (and is crazy expensive), it honestly feels like I’m running a diner, minus the tips or any help. How are you all handling this and not losing your minds? Hit me with your survival tips, or just tell me I’m not alone! Moms, I’m all ears.

I feel your pain, we have 2 sets of allergies that don’t overlap a multi faceted ED who is Neurospicy (her term not mine) DH is also very obviously not NT and the only carnivore but he just gets something meaty served alongside something <anything> someone else is eating

We only accommodate allergies in our house. If they don’t like the dinner, they can go to bed without one. It has happened and I have no issues or guilt about that! The only time the can participate in the decision making is for their pizza toppings once a week 😂

@Bjorkdidit

it IS OP’s responsibility as a mother to ensure her family are served healthy and nutritious meals every day that they enjoy.

You are having a laugh.

WTF? The more I read this single sentence the more I find wrong with it.

First, it is a parent’s job to provide meals for their children. My DH has worked incredibly hard over the years, but he can still find time to knock up a roast chicken with chips and peas or a pasta and sauce dinner if needed (now that he's realised he has to make dinner too! Took a while, but we got there.)

Secondly, trying to cook something nutritious and healthy THAT EVERYONE LIKES will kill the average parent with varying degrees of hopelessness. Don’t even try to peddle that shit - it’s a lie. It’s your job (and the job of any other parent in the house) to feed your kids. If they like it, bonus. If you are too busy for the healthy bit, so what, kids are resilient. If they are not hungry at bedtime, you are winning.

I’m on a restricted diet and mostly the family eat what I make - DD is the one who turns her nose up so often cooks for herself or will cook for us occasionally and I have to ‘do my own bit’ (which defeats the purpose).
I do often make a base meal and it can be added to etc.
Thankfully none of us is veggie currently as i cook a lot of chicken and salmon (only fish DD will eat).

To add, we are all adults.

same here, except i'm not cooking....My other half went mad the other day. sick of cooking 4 meals for 4 people. I'm gluten and dairy intolerant but his daughter is just plain difficult. my son says whatever there is. i will have most of the stuff partner eats, if it's pasta i have rice noodles but same sauce. his daughter is the one refusing to eat stuff. he's now said if she wont eat what we are having she can make her own noodles. and that's that. he cooks for the rest of us.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2011/oct/26/french-government-banning-vegetarianism-schools Read this. It shows that French schools are literally banning the daily vegetarian option.

And also, the French medical community is against vegetarianism, and the recommendations are quite clear that kids should be eating animal-based protein to be healthy. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31615715/ .

While veganism itself is not illegal, parents face severe consequences if their dietary choices lead to malnutrition. In this case, I totally understand the parents being condemned, but the law is very clear about it, unlike in other countries. https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/news/french-vegans-charged-with-child-neglect-217512 . I started looking into this because I have one friend living in Toulouse, and her paediatrician told her it is child mistreatment to reduce meat intake. So I was like, Am I mistreating my child by letting her go vegan?

The Guardian article is more than 14 years old... that's not proper research.
