Where do you put a newborn down safely during the day?

I'm spiraling down a rabbit hole at the moment planning what I need to buy for my baby due in September. It's my third but there has been quite a gap since my last. There is so much more information available on safety and best practice with newborns and seems everything is did with my previous 2 is now dangerous!

So my question is where do I put the newborn down in the day, downstairs?
I will have a next to me crib upstairs for night time. Thinking of times when im busy cooking, helping the other children etc.

Thank you all.

We had Moses baskey downstairs and crib upstairs so if we were downstairs, baby was in moses basket. Last feed / bum change etc before we went to bed we'd transfer them upstairs

Overthebow · 19/04/2026 21:13

We had a Moses basket for downstairs, although in reality neither mine liked to be put down so it wasn’t used much.

we have a joie travel system and use the carry cot and the carry cot stand for downstairs use.

when his asleep during the school run I’m able to transfer him onto the pram

Moses basket.
Baby bjorn bouncy chair on the most reclined setting
Carrycot from the pram
On the floor (depending on how old/rowdy your other children are)

I had a Cocoonababy which DD loved. Happy memories.

Moses basket downstairs - put them in it from day one so that they would get use to it. When they were a little older, we used the playpen every day.

Moses basket downstairs

We used a travel cot that had a raised bit for a newborn. Worked perfectly to keep DS separate from the DDog. Felt much more stable than a moses basket to us. Once DS could move more, we used the travel cot itself as a playpen for a bit.

NailsForChristmas · 19/04/2026 21:17

We used the bassinet from the pram.

Thunderdcc · 19/04/2026 21:17

Wherever you want, they can't move! My two both screamed their heads off in the Moses basket, looking at the ceiling isn't much fun. We had the Baby Bjorn bouncy chair, or my in-laws had a fisher price one that had a toy bar and played music.

TeddyBeans · 19/04/2026 21:20

On a play gym mat or a big fleece blanket that was made into a little bed for DD. The only other thing under her was a little donut pillow to help keep her head nice and round

DejaMooo · 19/04/2026 21:20

We used the carrycot from the pram - very handy for popping on to the pushchair frame when she fell asleep and I had to do the school run. Also had a bouncer and playmat which were very well used.

Travel cot, with the raised newborn bit initially.

it saved having to find somewhere to store the travel cot.

it was sturdy

they were then used to the travel cot.

in another house (different baby) a Moses basket.

pram that went completely flat.

when I was a child, my baby brother napped in my 'toy' silver cross pram. 😘

I wouldnt leave a newborn unsupervised in a bouncer

Hohofortherobbers · 19/04/2026 21:39

We had a playmat with arches over it and toys mirrors etc dangling off. Very useful and easily moved room to room, it was only approx 1m square

ultracynic · 19/04/2026 21:41

Baby beanbag, both of mine loved having little naps in it.

Moses basket, or pram bassinet/carry cot.

When they are too big for that, activity mat (assuming you aren’t leaving the room - I used to put DS down so I could potter, read a book, drink a cup of tea etc. I wasn’t leaving him unattended).

cinnamontroll · 19/04/2026 22:32

You’re having your third child and you do not know where to put your baby during the day? What did you do with your previous 2 children?

Helpboat · 19/04/2026 22:36

A small Moses basket which I could drag around the house with me for the first 6 months.

After 6 months or when they can sit up, a baby bouncer and or high chair.

Upstairs, next to me crib in our bedroom and regular crib in nursery.

After they can sit/stand next to me was switched to those travel cots in our room.

doghasnodentures · 19/04/2026 22:38

Moses basket ,pram or baby bouncer.Car seat if just back from car drive and occasionally straight into cot .

Sofasophie · 19/04/2026 22:54

Save money by having the crib upstairs and use the pram downstairs- no brainer! The carrycot part of the pram is a must have for baby to lie flat but it won’t be used often at all so definitely use this downstairs!

You have the advantage of baby lying flat/ safe area/ can move it around easily/ can pop out for walk or return from walk and leave baby to sleep- it’s everything you need in the first few months.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 19/04/2026 22:59

Mine never slept in a moses basket, screamed the place down in pram as well. Generally screamed at all times tbh (eventually diagnosed CMPA).

Mine lived in the sling.

mummybearSW19 · 19/04/2026 23:08

Moses basket upstairs
rocking basket thing on wheels downstairs
then
Pram downstairs and bedside cot upstairs

also sling a lot of the time. Hanababy wrap when super small. Various when they were older. Tried some from local sling library.

stokke trip Trapp baby set - means baby can be safely laid down at the right height whilst everyone is having dinner. Loved mine. Wish I had it for my first but only found out about when pregnant with my 2nd.
