Where do you put a newborn down safely during the day?

I'm spiraling down a rabbit hole at the moment planning what I need to buy for my baby due in September. It's my third but there has been quite a gap since my last. There is so much more information available on safety and best practice with newborns and seems everything is did with my previous 2 is now dangerous!

So my question is where do I put the newborn down in the day, downstairs?
I will have a next to me crib upstairs for night time. Thinking of times when im busy cooking, helping the other children etc.

Thank you all.

As others . .. in the bassinet part of the pram, just move it around, or in the pram outside. Even with current advice I would still leave a baby outside in a pram. I am surprised you don't just do what you did with your other kids.

Moses basket for downstairs, next 2 me for upstairs. As baby gets too big for Moses basket, travel cot/playpen can be moved around pretty easy. For awake time bouncer chair and when older a jumperoo

mondaytosunday · 19/04/2026 23:19

Travel cot, bouncy chair, floor (on a mat).

We had a baby bjorn bouncer and a mamaroo swing. Upstairs, I'd just pop them into the cot.

Also used a playpen when they were a bit bigger and mobile to keep them in one place.

Inthenameoflove · 19/04/2026 23:26

We had a small cot upstairs, a Moses basket and the bassinet on the buggy. But also fairly quickly we would put the baby on a mat on the floor. Maybe 3months? He was quite happy wiggling about. We didn’t have a dog though.

You’re having your third child and you do not know where to put your baby during the day? What did you do with your previous 2 children?

Pram downstairs. One of my kids slept much better outside so he was often in the garden. My youngest preferred the pram inside.

mummybearSW19 · 19/04/2026 23:42

You need this if you have older kids.

i already had the Tripp Trapp chair. I acquired the NB set via FB or GumTree.

it was a game changer. Baby at same height as everyone else for meal times or when a mate comes round for lunch or whilst you make a coffee
loved ours

I did ffs. Does the OP have amnesia from her previous children? Even if it’s been a considerable age gap you don’t just forget how to look after a baby when you’ve done it twice already!

Scrumpymum · 20/04/2026 10:21

I haven't forgotten what I did with my last 2 but it's been quite a gap. There is so much more advice now about safety such as not leaving in bouncers to sleep, beanbag a big no, if I now know and still did it I would be wrong to do so.
Floor not really an option with clumsy older children who like to wrestle and fight constantly!

I'll have a look for a Moses basket on MP I just didn't want to waste money on something which I wasn't sure would be used much or for long. I don't sit still much so wanted something quite portable.

We had a cot upstairs and moses basket downstairs but ended up using the pram bassinet mostly so the moses basket was a bit superfluous

wishIwasonholiday10 · 20/04/2026 11:06

If asleep I used Moses basket or pram bassinet. The pram works better as it’s darker with the hood down. If awake baby swing or Tripp Trapp newborn set. The Tripp Trapp is the only place she tolerated being put down awake for ages with the help of fish TV (the Baby Einstein aquarium toy brought off Vinted)

Can't you read? OP has said it's been a while, and so much has changed. My mum literally slept in a drawer so you can't just do what you used to do. If you don't have anything useful to say, maybe.. don't?

Moveoverdarlin · 20/04/2026 11:09

Next2Me crib upstairs and Moses basket on a stand downstairs.

lebin · 20/04/2026 11:12

I’m looking at getting the Najell baby carrier for my second. Hoping I’ll used it a bit more than a Moses basket as you can pop it in a the pram/ next to me/ cot.
First child I held a lot of the day but it won’t be practical this time round.

Basically - if they are asleep it’s a cot/ Moses basket/ carry cot/ baby carrier. If they are awake all the above are fine but also a bouncer or playmat.

SJM1988 · 20/04/2026 11:12

Carry cot part of the pram. I has a moses basket with my first but he hated it so didnt bother second time around. Our carry cot fitted on the moses basket stand perfectly.

kscarpetta · 20/04/2026 11:14

I mostly put my 3rd in the sling, or if she cooperated then the pram. Also had a bouncer when she was a bit bigger but only if supervised due to risk from older siblings.

Hohumitsreallyallthereis · 20/04/2026 11:24

Hohofortherobbers · 19/04/2026 21:39

We had a playmat with arches over it and toys mirrors etc dangling off. Very useful and easily moved room to room, it was only approx 1m square

Same. Also used the pram (it had a bassinet) if I knew we were going for a walk soon. We had shops, playground etc walking distance so were out most mornings with the older one. Often the baby was asleep before we left the house! The pram spent more time in the house than in the car boot.

But then my older one stayed well clear of the baby until he was about four months and more interesting:-) so baby being on a mat for a few minutes wasn’t an issue.

mindutopia · 20/04/2026 11:29

Bouncer or a sling. Or a blanket on the floor, but probably not with other children (or pets) running around.

Rounder888 · 20/04/2026 11:31

I had a Moses basket and a bouncer downstairs for when my toddler was home as well, then also a play Mat for during the day

StormGazing · 20/04/2026 11:34

I used the pram’s carrycot in the daytime, this rapidly changed to the baby gym which was brilliant

WonderingAboutBabies · 20/04/2026 11:43

I had the newborn attachment for the TrippTrapp, DD would often snooze in it while I cooked in the kitchen with her in the room. It was handy as we had a small flat and a dog, so I didn't feel comfortable leaving her on the floor while getting on with chores. We also had a nest on the sofa but only allowed her in it while completely supervised. With the Tripp Trapp attachment I could pop to the loo but wouldn't do this with the nest.

We had a next to me in the bedroom for overnight sleep.

We are about to move to a 4 bed (from a flat) and will have all the same set up but will add a moses basket to the living room for our next child!

Same! The pram we had is certified safe for sleeping and it was ace! He loved sleeping in there more than his crib. The pram basically lived in our living room until about 5/6 months, I laid out a temporary carpet to not destroy the flooring underneath with dirty pram wheels.

A long gap i presume woth modern baby gadgets and ideas have changed
As well as fads and ideas as they do
Go be a biarch to someone esle aye.

Star2004k · 20/04/2026 12:35

Moses basket when very newborn and when a few weeks old we used a bouncer suitable for newborns (ergobaby has one).

but the floor on a padded playmat is also fine as long as no one will trip on them/pets etc.
