Where do you and your partner fall in birth order?

Just for fun. I noticed in my family, everyone seems to fall in the same birth order. Probably just coincidence, but wondered if any of you had similar.
My partner and I are both second born
My brother and wife are both first born
My mum and dad are both first born
My grandparents were both fifth born
My inlaws are both first born

I wonder if my children will follow a similar pattern

I'm an only and DH is first born of three. My mum was the eldest of four, Dad was the third of four. Friend is middle child of seven and her DH is the elder of two. So no, not around here.

Plastictreees · 12/09/2025 14:47

That’s interesting. I’m an only child, my DH is the youngest but his sibling is 16 years older so he felt like an only child in many ways.

HostaCentral · 12/09/2025 14:52

Last born for both of us, but that was third and fourth.

My Mum and Dad were oldest of three, and youngest of 8 (three died at birth), so youngest of 5 living.

We’re both only children.

My ex was the youngest of 3, previous ex was also an only child.

gingercat02 · 12/09/2025 14:55

Me oldest him youngest
Brother youngest SIL middle
BIL and SIL both oldest
Mum oldest Dad middle
MIL oldest FIL middle

Scousemousey · 12/09/2025 14:55

My DH is the eldest of 5, I am the youngest of 3.
There is definitely some of the same dynamic at play sometimes. He will try to use his "oldest child authority" to influence my choices or opinions. I sometimes revert to "youngest child helplessness" when I want him to do something I don't want to do myself. We are aware of it and play up to it for the lols. 😁

I’m the youngest of 3
dh is the eldest of 2
my mum is the eldest of 4
my dad is 3rd of 5
mil is the eldest of 3
fil I s the middle child of 3

honeylulu · 12/09/2025 15:18

I'm the first born of two. Husband is second born of four although his older sister was disabled so he was always treated as the oldest if that makes sense.

My adult son and his girlfriend are both first born of two.

But my sister is a second born and her husband is an only.

Grandparents on mums side were second and fifth born.
Grandparents on other side were first born of three and an only.

Aunt second born (youngest) and her husband youngest of three.

So the strongest pattern seems to be two eldest children together. But that's only my family and it's also skewed because there always has to be a first born!

I do think eldest children tend to be given more responsibility and maybe we then flock together.

GentlemenPreferBuzzcuts · 12/09/2025 15:25

I’m the eldest of five, he’s the youngest of five.

romdowa · 12/09/2025 15:26

Both the eldest of two.

ResusciAnnie · 12/09/2025 15:26

Both second of 2 same-sex siblings.

Coldnightsapproachingwhereismyduvet · 12/09/2025 15:26

Me and dh are both only dc...

CherryBake · 12/09/2025 15:27

Dh is the first born
I'm the only born

BourgeoisBabe · 12/09/2025 15:28

I'm fifth of six, my DH is fifth of nine.

VegQueen · 12/09/2025 15:29

We are both youngest of 2 but have very different family dynamics including with our sibling and very different age gaps.

ApricotCheesecake · 12/09/2025 15:30

DH and I are both youngest of two
My brother and his wife are both eldest of two
My dad is eldest of two and mum is middle of three
My FIL is eldest of two and MIL is youngest of two

LupaMoonhowl · 12/09/2025 15:31

Interesting question!
I am the eldest, and my four significant relationships have also been with the eldest child.
My bro and his wife both second children.
On a related note, as s school teacher I used to amuse myself with my incoming Y7 classes by betting with myself where in sibling order they were and got to be pretty good at guussing correctly.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 12/09/2025 15:34

I’m the eldest, DH is fourth of five.

TheFallenMadonna · 12/09/2025 15:35

I'm the oldest. My DH is the middle, but the oldest son, and that mattered in his family. My DS is the oldest of two, his GF is the youngest of two.

CarpetKnees · 12/09/2025 16:03

Complete mix here, amongst both my siblings and their spouse, my in-laws and their spouses, and also my adult dc and their spouses.

Ddakji · 12/09/2025 16:07

I’m second born and youngest
DH is third born (second youngest)

I think it’s just your family!

Thundertoast · 12/09/2025 16:12

Oldest and oldest, and thinking about it, lots of people in our families follow similar patterns!

Meandery · 12/09/2025 16:14

I'm the oldest, with a sibling 10 years younger. DH is youngest but his siblings are all 20+ years older.

So we both spent our early childhood essentially as the only child in the household.

Onefortheroad25 · 12/09/2025 16:15

I’m the youngest of 2 (brother deceased now though)
Dh is youngest of 5. No obvious patterns in our lives anyway

OklahomaSunsets · 12/09/2025 16:25

I’m the middle child of 3 children, my partner is the youngest of 3.
