I feel fucking horrendous, 8m ds, just stared crawling, just got a gate and not put it up yet, went to the loo with him, took my eye off the ball for 30 seconds because older ds (8) was sat with him, next min he fell down the stairs, i chased him down but i just wasnt quick enough, he cryed but nothing like i was expecting, ive seen worse when hes fell back on his bum when he trys to pull himself up. he has a lump on the side of his head but its only small. i feel fucking awful, im such a shit mother, im tired and i fucked up. He's alert, chatting, babbling and blowing raspberries.

Do i take him the drs or A and e? Or just monitor.

Im still shaking, please be kind i know im shit.

How many stairs? I would err on the side of caution and go to a and e personally.

Motnight · 05/07/2024 08:34

You're not a shit mother by the way!

Top to bottom. Take him to the hospital to be checked out

Imustgoforarun · 05/07/2024 08:35

I would get him checked as it is the side of his head. But my 8 month old also did the same and was absolutely fine.

Accidents happen, kids are incredibly fast. He sounds like he's doing fine but as he's 8 months I'd take him to a&e to be safe. Don't beat yourself up though love.

FloatyBoaty · 05/07/2024 08:36

That’s a long fall for a little kid. A&E. Even though he seems fine, but it’s the right thing to do to check. You must be very shaken, so get something hot and sweet to drink when you pass a machine. And don’t give yourself a hard time, accidents happen.

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 05/07/2024 08:37

I would personally monitor if he seems completely fine to avoid a lengthy wait in hospital but have a very low threshold for taking him to A&E if anything at all seems amiss.

My friend's 3yo was in A&E last week with a huge egg on her head and they said to monitor for 48 hours for sickness/loss of consciousness etc but said any symptoms were more likely to show in the first 4 hours.

Peclet · 05/07/2024 08:37

Accidents happen. You’re not a bad mum. My baby rolled off the bed and under it. Not only did her hurt himself I also couldn’t find him for a few seconds.

Get him checked for peace of mind and put the stair gate up!

Cheepcheepcheep · 05/07/2024 08:37

Oh you poor thing. I’ve been there - my 18mo fell about 2/3 of the way down the stairs when I was popping a jumper on my eldest. Sadly mine broke his arm but that was obvious at the time.

Either way though, I think it’s an A&E job. And be kind to yourself - it happens, I’m sure he’s fine, and before you know it the only person who will be traumatised by this or remember it will be you(!)

rainbowsparkle28 · 05/07/2024 08:37

A&E.

PortiasBiscuit · 05/07/2024 08:38

The first time my friend realised her baby could roll is when she heard him crying at the bottom of the stairs.
It’s sort of a right of passage, if you are very worried take him to A&E. However if he calms down, eats and drinks normally and is not more sleepy or whiny than usual, he’s probably okay.

TheBizzies · 05/07/2024 08:38

If he's alert like you say and you have checked no obvious injuries then no I wouldn't be going to an and e. I would monitor very closely

i wouldn't be relying on an 8 year old to keep eyes nears stairs either in the future, too much responsibility

SJC2015 · 05/07/2024 08:38

I'd take him to get him checked because of the lump but my DD did the same at around 8/9 months. She was fine. After the initial shock you wouldn't have know anything happened.

You're not a shit mum. Something like this happens to all of us at some point in our children's lives - even if people tell you it hasn't it has!

Bells3032 · 05/07/2024 08:39

I'd say A&E. GP won't be able to do any xrays etc. If you have an A&E with a kids section deff go there. And you're not a shit mum. accidents happen. Sounds like he's ok but best to check him out

Don’t be a dick, you second guess yourself at times like this and she’s asking for advice because it’s hard to think straight when you’ve had a shock.

FeatherBoas · 05/07/2024 08:39

He could have other injuries, go to A&E. The obvious bump on his head may not be the most worrying bit, he needs checking over properly.

GagaBinks · 05/07/2024 08:40

I rang 999 when my 10 month old did it. I was hysterical.

He was absolutely fine but there's no way I could've just monitored him myself. I needed someone professional to tell me he was OK so I could calm down. I'll never forgive myself for it happening.

pinkchristmaspudding · 05/07/2024 08:40

I would be straight to a&e. I fell down the stairs holding my 7 month old, he bumped his head and had a lump. We went straight to a&e and it was a skull fracture. I don't want to scare you at all, just pointing out the possibilities.

He did scream the house down like I've never heard mind; which was a tell tale sign of something more serious.

Lulooo · 05/07/2024 08:40

Take him to AE just in case. You are absolutely not a shit mother. Don’t beat yourself up. Hopefully he’ll be fine but AE as a precaution. Be prepared for some awkward questions at the hospital and just be absolutely genuine in your response.
Sending a virtual hug x

VirginiaGirl · 05/07/2024 08:40

Happened to my son when he was about 2, he slid down face first, was absolutely fine. You aren't a bad mum. These things happen.

HazelWicker · 05/07/2024 08:41

Go to A&E. if you keep an eye and something seems odd and you then go, it'll be a red flag as for why you didn't go straight away to start with. Just go now.

medianewbie · 05/07/2024 08:41

A&E for reassurance. Good luck x

randomusernam · 05/07/2024 08:42

I feel down the stairs top to bottom and they classed it as a trauma emergency. Get him to a&e now or better ring an ambulance. Not a bad mum. These things are so easily done
