I feel fucking horrendous, 8m ds, just stared crawling, just got a gate and not put it up yet, went to the loo with him, took my eye off the ball for 30 seconds because older ds (8) was sat with him, next min he fell down the stairs, i chased him down but i just wasnt quick enough, he cryed but nothing like i was expecting, ive seen worse when hes fell back on his bum when he trys to pull himself up. he has a lump on the side of his head but its only small. i feel fucking awful, im such a shit mother, im tired and i fucked up. He's alert, chatting, babbling and blowing raspberries.

Do i take him the drs or A and e? Or just monitor.

Im still shaking, please be kind i know im shit.

Christ for an 8 month old falling too to bottom of stairs I’d have phoned 999 immediately. Babies can hide their injuries incredibly well, seem fine and go downhill within minutes.

Fall off a bed? Yes wait for partner etc, but top to bottom of stairs is 999 first, post on mumsnet later.

whatamess100 · 05/07/2024 14:51

He's completely fine, the drs were amazing and we only had to wait 45 mins.

Thanks for the support and kind words

I don’t think any parent in the entire world has never had a situation like this. We’ve been there. I think with a bump on the head it may be worth going into a&e, just to rule anything out.

Pheeeew, thanks for updating. So happy for you.

Funnywonder · 05/07/2024 15:12

Good news!

DollieBantrysPantry · 05/07/2024 15:13

Really pleased your son is fine, I know it’s easy to say but hope you will soon feel ok too, a massive upset/shock for you that you forget in a hurry

Greatmate · 05/07/2024 16:33

That's great. It's better to get checked out. Now you can move on. I still ruminating about when I fell over while carrying my youngest in the baby carrier. She didn't have any bumps or bruises but I still think about it. I didn't go to hospital because It was the start of COVID. I had 2 under 2. I was scared shitless and was considered ECV.

Excellent news OP that's the main thing, no harm done! You are extremely lucky with the wait, good job it wasn't Friday/sat evening!

Askingforafriendtoday · 06/07/2024 18:05

So pleased he's ok, OP. You did the right thing and you sound like a lovely mum. Similar things have happened to us all.

It seems so sad that you needed to tell people to be kind and yet some were still just horrible 🤔 What's wrong with people?!

Namechangedididittoo · 06/07/2024 18:22

My toddler fell off some play equipment (many years ago now) she seemed fine at first so I kissed it better and told her to carry on playing it was only later on that the deformity showed itself and she had a badly broken arm that needed operating on.
we’ve all done these things don’t beat yourself up

Ilovetravelling · 06/07/2024 18:28

I fell from top to bottom of the stairs at the age of 17months. I was in a coma for 2 days before I woke up. Afterwards I was completely fine, but at the age of 5 I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. My mother was told it was probably due to this fall I had. I will be on medication all my life. Even though he seems fine I would still take him to A&E.

Jumpers4goalposts · 06/07/2024 18:41

If you are happy waiting to do a whole list of other things he doesn’t need to go to A&E. When my baby fell down the stairs (top gate hadn’t been locked shut) it was straight to A&E everything else could wait, and GP’s came and picked up eldest.

whydoinotgetalife · 06/07/2024 18:47

you are not a bad mother!! my 5 month old DS fell off the bed yesterday, feel exactly like you do but we are both not awful mothers. bad mums don’t care

Luxembourgmama · 06/07/2024 18:49

définitely A&E

MMAS · 06/07/2024 18:56

I have no children but fail completely to understand why a mother that has just had her under 12 months baby fall down a stairs not immediately call an ambulance or any kind of Doctor. Why in the name of God would you as a mother use this Forum for help in the first place ? The time it took to actually type your question beggars belief.

Skybluepinky · 06/07/2024 19:00

A&E and don’t leave an 8 year old in charge of yr baby even for short periods of time.

JT12 · 06/07/2024 19:06

I know I am late to the post. A similar thing happened to me. A&E. I took mine straight to A&E and had head x-rays and tests done. He was absolutely fine but I felt awful. I still have flashbacks about it. I had a similar distraction from my 2 year old and was holding my baby with one hand but turned around to deal with my toddler and the baby did a kind of flip and fell. 21 years later and he is still fine - phew ❤️

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 06/07/2024 19:12

Have only read a few replies.
You're not a shit mum.
You've not fucked up.
Was going to advise going to A&E - glad to see you made that decision.
My daughter and son-in-law are great/loving parents. My Grandchildren (7&4) have "season tickets" for A& E.

Flopsy145 · 06/07/2024 19:52

My DD did this same age, I caught her at the bottom and she was fine. Very easily done as these things happen so quickly ❤️ I still feel guilty about my 5 week old DD rolling off a footstool while I went to get myself a slice of cake. Happens to us all at some point!

Doglady1764 · 06/07/2024 19:53

Honestly OP it happens to the best of us. Try to be kind to yourself and take it easy ❤️

Because calling an ambulance was unnecessary.

itsjustGin · 06/07/2024 20:53

A&E.

Tbh i agree with those saying that it should have been immediate. A taxi or call your husband home from work. I would not dither about doing other chores.

I don't understand everyone saying that a baby falling down the stairs is normal or a right of passage either.

Older children i can understand but a baby should never be close enough to unguarded stairs to fall down them.

Lyraloo · 06/07/2024 20:57

Better to be safe than sorry, go to a&e! Don’t beat yourself up, accidents happen especially when babies are first on the move, one day they can move a few inches slowly and the next they’re across the room in a split second. There are not many mums who haven’t had an accident with a little one. You’re not a bad mum. Hope all is ok.
