Hello

I'm really worried as I dropped my newborn baby 5 weeks old as I was walking down stairs I had about 3/4 steps to go and he landed on our wooden floor! He cried his eyes out but I checked for any bumps or bruises but he has calmed down now and seems fine but should I get him checked?

I feel sick and so awful about it!! He's due for a nap so very tired but almost don't want him to sleep as just so worried I've hurt him 😭

Thanks
Emma

Ring 111 or go to A&E.

wandawaves · 03/10/2023 13:20

Yes you need to get him checked.

jadey1991 · 03/10/2023 13:20

Hi op I couldn't just read and leave... I would get him checked at the hospital as that is quite a few steps. Did u fall too?

I hope baby is ok

Take him to a&e immediately

helplesshopeless · 03/10/2023 13:20

Hello

Given he's so young and he landed on such a hard surface I'd go and get him checked out at a&e. Hopefully they'll see him quickly and then you can be reassured that he is ok.

What PP said. But skip 111 and go straight to A and E.

This stuff happens - don't feel.guilty - but do go and get him.checked out.

emlouba · 03/10/2023 13:22

Ok I'm going now I feel so awful

I'm glad you're going in. Always get a baby seen if they've been dropped from that sort of height and landed on a hard floor.

I hope he's okay and you're home soon.

PinkDaffodil2 · 03/10/2023 13:24

Definitely take him to A&E to get checked over, they won’t judge - this is quite a common scenario. The only safeguarding concern would be if you delayed taking them in.

Ok I'm going Omg I hope he's ok I feel so sick about it

Don't feel bad accidents happen. Just get him checked over

Londonscallingme · 03/10/2023 13:25

i can understand why you feel awful, as anyone would, but this must happen a lot and they will regularly see people in hospital who have done the same or similar. I am sure he’ll be fine but good to get him checked out x

Olika · 03/10/2023 13:25

It was an accident but def be on your way to A&E. ❤️‍🩹

DunderMifflinInc · 03/10/2023 13:26

Accidents happen but you absolutely need to get him checked out.

parietal · 03/10/2023 13:26

Take snacks! When I took baby to A&E for checks after a fall, we had to stay for hours for observations.

TheBeesKnee · 03/10/2023 13:27

He's probably fine but the rule of thumb is if they fall 3ft or onto a hard surface. It's good that he cried, means he was responsive.

Best of luck!

Agreed. Make sure to overpack everything you would usually need in case you're there for a long time

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 03/10/2023 13:28

Try not to worry, it's better to get him check out, I'm sure he's fine but your only worry if you don't get him checked. Call 111, although their probably call 999 but better than driving yourself as you can't see him if he's in the back seat or see if someone can take you. Accidents do happen to everyone.

Bendysnap · 03/10/2023 13:28

Take a moment to pack a full bag with everything you might need for four + hours.
phone charger, snacks for you, nappies etc etc

MariaVT65 · 03/10/2023 13:29

It’s always a good sign that he cried. It would be more concerning if he remained silent on unresponsive.

It’s great you’re taking him to a&e to get checked. If anything urgent happens like that again, please just ring 111 straight away instead of posting on here.

Good luck! Hope baby is ok x

lenalove · 03/10/2023 13:34

The same thing happened to my mother when I was a baby - she took me to A&E to be checked and luckily all was fine, just a horrible shock. Definitely better safe than sorry though, hope all OK for you both xx

Ok I'm going now I feel so awful

These things happen don't worry yourself just get him checked. Keep us updated

Thewizardbinbag · 03/10/2023 13:37

Hope it’s all Ok but don’t panic. Newborns can take a bumping! And if he cried then he wasn’t even winded, no lumps or bumps or bleeding or anything sounds all OK.

Get him checked but calm yourself; nothing to panic about unless he starts showing any off signs or they tell you there is an issue.

Thebigblueballoon · 03/10/2023 13:39

OP, my parents dropped me on a stone floor when I was six weeks old and cracked my skull open. It was horrific and I screamed blue murder, but it was fine in the end and no lasting damage. They’re more resilient than you think and I’m sure he will be fine. Take him straight to A&E and don’t beat yourself up.
