Hello

I'm really worried as I dropped my newborn baby 5 weeks old as I was walking down stairs I had about 3/4 steps to go and he landed on our wooden floor! He cried his eyes out but I checked for any bumps or bruises but he has calmed down now and seems fine but should I get him checked?

I feel sick and so awful about it!! He's due for a nap so very tired but almost don't want him to sleep as just so worried I've hurt him 😭

Thanks
Emma

Pleased he is ok and as previous posters have said don’t be too hard on yourself 💐

HamstersAreMyLife · 03/10/2023 15:54

So pleased he's OK. My oldest fell off a high bed onto the floor as a baby and whilst he was completely fine I was in bits. ☕

Wouldn't say it's embarrassing

There are those of us who have dropped our baby and those who will drop one.

Mariposista · 03/10/2023 16:03

Very glad the baby is ok. Put it behind you now OP, you will know to take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I do wonder what the MN reaction would be if it were a father dropping a baby. No doubt very different.

Pockettopic · 03/10/2023 16:04

It’s best to say something than nothing because you don’t know what it may have caused, but hopefully nothing!

Justnotsureaboutit2021 · 03/10/2023 16:08

My husband did exactly the same with our newborn, it was awful. We took the baby to A&E and he was absolutely fine but with young children, ALWAYS play it on the safe side when it comes to their health and get them checked out.

TadpolesInPool · 03/10/2023 16:13

I once went into work shaky and pale. Colleagues asked if I was ok. I said my baby (9 months? Cant remember) had fallen off changing table flat on his back. I was so upset and felt that I would (and should!) be judged.

To my surprise came an outpouring of similar stories! They all remember how awful they felt.

It was an accident. You did the right thing getting him seen and now you can also rest easy knowing he's not been injured.

Less embarrassing than posting on a thread that you haven't bothered to read.

Great news OP ❤️

Dannysgirl31 · 03/10/2023 16:28

I'm so glad he's okay!!

I know how awful you must feel but be reassured he's okay xx

DonegalGhirl · 03/10/2023 16:28

Ahh God love you, I’m sure your baby will be fine but you’ve done the right thing getting him checked out at A&E.

I accidentally spilled a small drop of boiling water on DD’s thigh when she was a similar age, I immediately put a cold cloth over it but a red mark still appeared. Although in my head I knew she was fine I took her to the pharmacist to check out. However when I walked into the shop, like you I just burst out crying. The staff couldn’t have been nicer, she was checked out and I was assured she was fine but I still had insisted on buying cream & dressings for burns……just in case. She’s 19 now and scar free.

bpBe kind to yourself as accidents can happen to anyone Xx.

Olika · 03/10/2023 16:32

So glad to hear baby is fine 😍

Its5656 · 03/10/2023 16:33

Glad he is ok, don't beat yourself up over it. Accidents happen. I fell down a entire flight of stairs when my son was a baby, broke his toe. I remember feeling awful.

TrishTrix · 03/10/2023 16:33

I saw so many babies who were dropped when i worked in Paeds ED. It's really common. Glad you got seen and to all those who may encounter this thread afterwards do go and get your kid checked.

I also saw several colleagues kids. So even if you know a lot about falls prevention it still happens!

My top tips:
Don't leave kids on high surfaces (e.g car seat on the worktop/ table) where they might fall.

Always strap them into the pushchair
Try to avoid leaving them lying on a standard bed as that seems to always be where a kid works out how to roll for the first time.

Dominoeffecter · 03/10/2023 16:40

Drilled the baby 😂

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/10/2023 16:50

Glad he's fine OP
You did absolutely the right thing
I tripped and banged DS's head off a doorframe at similar age
Most people have stories to tell
Be kind to yourself

Pinkbonbon · 03/10/2023 16:52

Unless he landed on his head he'll probably be absolutely fine. Unless there's a break you can't see on a limb somewhere...but he'd probably be screaming the place down non stop if that.

But best go get him checked over just incase though. Don't beat yourself up. I'm sure it happens to everyone once.

YukoandHiro · 03/10/2023 16:53

Accidents happen when you're exhausted but he does need to be checked. Glad you're going in

AbbeyGailsParty · 03/10/2023 16:53

When you’re settled back at home just check your stairs that there’s no loose carpet, anything that could have made you slip. But don’t stress yourself again, these things happen.
A relative of mine dropped her baby behind the TV, in the days of huge, box shaped TVs. Baby was ok!

NeverFullyDressedWithoutAScarf · 03/10/2023 16:59

I dropped my second daughter - it was really traumatic (more for me than for her!). She is now a perfectly healthy and happy 15 year old. I have never forgotten the feeling :-( .So glad you went to a&e :-)

Mel2023 · 03/10/2023 17:02

Please take him to A&E and get checked. They won’t judge and these things happen. Babies are more resilient thank you think. Are you ok? My baby slipped through my fingers when I was getting his wriggly bum dressed at the health visitors after weighing him. He fell off the table and landed on the floor hitting his head. Luckily our HV was a nurse! I was more traumatised than him, and they sent us to A&E. He was absolutely fine. But it’s always better to get them checked over x

StarlightLady · 03/10/2023 17:06

So pleased all is well OP. 💝

Remember it's over, there is no need to beat yoourself up over it.

Inastatus · 03/10/2023 17:07

@Mel2023 - she’s been and he’s fine.

OP - glad all is well.
