Hello

I'm really worried as I dropped my newborn baby 5 weeks old as I was walking down stairs I had about 3/4 steps to go and he landed on our wooden floor! He cried his eyes out but I checked for any bumps or bruises but he has calmed down now and seems fine but should I get him checked?

I feel sick and so awful about it!! He's due for a nap so very tired but almost don't want him to sleep as just so worried I've hurt him 😭

Thanks
Emma

Why would it be embarrassing. OP I tripped and dropped one of mine when they where a baby absolutely terrifying experience but luckily they where fine. I'm glad your little one is OK to. Don't be hard on yourself it happens

Sazzie12153007 · 03/10/2023 20:01

My eldest fell off the bed at that age went straight to A&E to get her checked luckily all was fine. Next day had a visit from health visitor and shortly after a call from social services. Just for a welfare check. But was signed off straight away as accidents happen 🤗 glad baby is OK.. xx

MissCordeliaPreston · 03/10/2023 20:27

I dropped one of mine on her head on a hard surface. Called an ambulance (couldn't drive as I fell too and was in a lot of pain - and we were blue-lighted in. Felt like a fool and time waster when I was told she was fine but I had a broken coccyx. But they prefer you to be safe than sorry so you absolutely did the right thing in taking your baby in. Now, forgive yourself. These things happen and babies are pretty resilient.

Glad all is ok OP. FWIW I’ve worked in A&E for many many years and you would be surprised just how often this happens. The parents are invariably way more upset than the baby who is usually completely fine by the point they get seen in A&E. Try not to beat yourself up about it, it happens to the best of us ;including me!)

kamboozled · 03/10/2023 20:40

Please don't beat yourself up over this - total accident! Hope everything is okay with the check up. xx

My eldest learned how to roll over the only time I left him on the sofa. I was just going to grab something out of the kitchen and.... THUMP! WAAAAH!
I credit DH for choosing the thickest underlay for the carpet so he had a soft landing. I never left him on the sofa again.
Since then he has managed to headbutt a coffee table (needed a butterfly stitch), attempted to climb into the boot of our car (forehead needed gluing) and fallen less than a metre from some school play equipment onto his outstretched hand which resulted in a fractured elbow. He said he went to wave at a friend - with the hand he was holding on with. He also walked smack into a bright yellow bollard in the school car park and needed that stuck back together too.
My youngest just likes putting things up his nose and eating coins. He was 8 when we ended up in A&E because he'd eaten a two pence piece and it was stuck, causing him a lot of pain. Had to knock him out and fish it out in the end and the doctor said he was hoping for a higher value coin!
I've told them both that A%E doesn't give rewards for frequent flyers.

Ignore this twat OP. They’re just acting like a dickhead for their own entertainment. Pathetic really 😂

Glad LO is ok!

Social services would end that call and all have a moan about what a ridiculous waste of time that report is, before wasting tax payer money to send someone out just as a tick box exercise.
Stuff like this happens, especially with new parents. It isn’t a social services case.

Doobeedoobeedoobee · 03/10/2023 21:08

You poor thing. I’ve got a 14 month old and went to A&E last year because I dropped her when walking. It’s horrible isn’t it. Really really feel for you. The guilt will go I promise!
Best for your baby and your peace of mind to get it checked out. Sending so much love

Dibbydoos · 03/10/2023 22:04

Go to A&E don't bother with 111, he's 5 weeks old and fell from a big height....

JanglingJack · 03/10/2023 22:25

Only read the OPs posts.

Waiting to be seen at 14.11

Home by 15.11.

I'll go back and double check.

JanglingJack · 03/10/2023 22:27

Okay, fine to go home at 15.11 after waiting to be seen at 14.11. I love the NHS and their fast turnaround!

emlouba · 04/10/2023 02:39

@JanglingJack yes they were so fast - I think maybe as he's only 5 weeks?! But they did amazing - they checked him all over xx

Thanks again everyone & im glad I'm not only one who has done this reading your stories! Never again though. Honestly made me feel sick with worry and I felt awful, can't stop cuddling and kissing him! Xx

Try a little sling for him, might give you a bit of extra confidence on the stairs maybe?!

emlouba · 04/10/2023 18:08

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece @Thewizardbinbag oh god I didn't even see the nasty comment! What did they say? You always get someone negative comment, the hospital reassured me it happens and not to beat myself up over it - I still feel awful but I'm walking very carefully down the stairs now- will never happen again as I'm being extra cautious! Made me feel awful xxxx

@JanglingJack yes I have got a sling today, thank you- I used it and even with that on I'm holding on him - too scared now, being extra cautious xxx

worth checking for future - Do you have a private hospital near you? Our local private has a children’s A&E and it’s £100 to be seen - they see you immediately, might be worth checking out rather than sitting in A&E for hours.

JustHappyWhereIAm · 04/10/2023 18:48

Just seen this and wanted to just say - so many of us will have done similar, it’s perfectly normal, and not your fault at all. Accidents happen!
Glad your LO is fine, must have been scary for you. Sending hugs. x

Toohot2trot · 04/10/2023 18:56

Just came on to say my Ds rolled off my bed, was changing him, turned round to grab baby wipes and he was on the floor.I felt absolutely terrible about it but the staff at A+E were wonderful about it, accidents do happen x

She was in and out within an hour! Give the NHS credit where it's due 🙂

Jacesmum1977 · 04/10/2023 19:03

They say if there’s no vomiting then children should be fine.
Always a good thing to take them for a check up that young just in case he’s broken anything but you’ll be surprised at how robust babies/kids are.

MadMadaMim · 04/10/2023 19:07

A 5 week old baby dropped down multiple stairs and they didn't keep baby on for a few hours of observation?!?

Hopefully, there won't be a near time, but if there is don't let them go you off. Sounds like they just about had time to check for anything broken - how long were they with the baby?

Tighginn · 04/10/2023 19:11

I don't think their is a parent in the world that doesn't have a story like this tell. Be gentle on yourself.

Namechangedididittoo · 04/10/2023 19:14

When my daughter was two weeks old I fell asleep on the sofa whilst holding her it wasn’t until I woke up and she was on the carpet did I realise I’d dropped her 🙈
the guilt was awful but it was an accident as was yours
I’m glad you’re little one is safe and well
try not to blame yourself

masterblaster · 04/10/2023 19:19

Get him checked for your peace of mind.

but…

babies bounce. I was once carrying my daughter in my shoulders (she was maybe 2). I failed to walk off a kerb of maybe 3 inches. She somersaulted off backwards.

absolutely nothing wrong with her. I thought I’d definitely killed her.
