Hello

I'm really worried as I dropped my newborn baby 5 weeks old as I was walking down stairs I had about 3/4 steps to go and he landed on our wooden floor! He cried his eyes out but I checked for any bumps or bruises but he has calmed down now and seems fine but should I get him checked?

I feel sick and so awful about it!! He's due for a nap so very tired but almost don't want him to sleep as just so worried I've hurt him 😭

Thanks
Emma

BurbageBrook · 03/10/2023 14:54

(Sorry missed update glad you're getting him checked-- obviously don't blame yourself.)

bluestar5 · 03/10/2023 14:55

Oh darling. Accidents happen and you shouldn't blame yourself. My son fell head first from his pushchair unto concrete when he slipped out of my hands. It just happened so quickly and I felt terrible. Luckily he was ok and hope your little one will be the same. Big hugs xx

IveHadItUpToHere · 03/10/2023 14:57

I hope your baby is ok OP. You did the right thing taking them to the hospital. Babies are surprisingly resilient but it's just as well to get them checked Flowers
Every parent has a baby falling or rolling story.

Miisty · 03/10/2023 14:58

Take him to A and E for a check up I’ve had patients ring me up saying they’ve drilled the baby or it has rolled of the bed for safeties sake go to A and E Also a bit of useful information if you put baby in a sling(in front of you)be careful if it’s icy as you can slip !

These things happen , 30plus years ago we were at a friends , her very new baby was in a big silver cross pram in the sitting room . Her daughter ( my daughters friend ) was messing about on roller skates , she threaded her arms through the crossbar of the handle and was chatting away , probably about 6 or so , anyway her skates slipped from under her and she wooshed down on to her bum . The pram turned in to a catapult ! And sent Sophie flying, she literally flew in to the back cushion of the sofa ! We were so shocked we just stared at each other for a second, before little one let out the most indignant yell ! Life happens soph was and is fine . Please don’t beat yourself up, there’s not a mother alive who doesn’t wish to rewind time at one point xx

We were at a funeral. Dh was outside with six month baby and dropped him. He had a real shiner on his forehead. Fortunately lots of nurses at the funeral who checked him over. You won’t be the first, and certainly won’t be the last. Don’t beat yourself up, and I hope baby (and you) are okay.

Riverlee · 03/10/2023 15:00

@Popetthetreehugger you’ve put a name in your thread. Don’t know whether you intended to.

Emeraldrings · 03/10/2023 15:03

Happens to all of us.
When I was about 18 my cousin said to my mum I'm glad emeraldrings is okay because I dropped her when she was a baby! My mum wasn't overly pleased.
I also dropped my DD when she was a baby, misjudged a step and she fell. We went straight to A&E but she is 17 now and absolutely fine.

NewGrad · 03/10/2023 15:08

Aww poor love. Glad you’re taking him to be checked out. Fingers crossed you’ve both just had a big fright

emlouba · 03/10/2023 15:11

Thank you so much everyone! That worried me absolutely sick. He's fine thank goodness ♥️ we are fine to go back home! Honestly felt so awful, so thankful he's ok. Xx

Glad he’s okay and it’s great you got him checked over. Great you’ve got peace of mind now and hopefully you can both have lots of snuggles at home this afternoon!

BlurredEdges · 03/10/2023 15:20

Op 💜
My youngest had an accident when he had just started crawling. I should have been watching him and wasn't (didn't realise how quickly he could move).

He was totally fine, but that was just luck, it could easily have gone the other way. I think about it every single day and it was about 8 years ago.

What I'm saying is we have all fucked up as tired parents. I'm really glad your baby is OK and well done for getting him checked so quickly.

Lovelymoon · 03/10/2023 15:23

I hope it goes okay! Don’t be yourself up about it. It happens to the best of us. Just be prepared for the staff to do full body checks of your baby’s body for bruises etc to rule out foul play. It’s never nice having to sit through that but obviously it’s protocol.

alhough, will there be any staff? As there are strikes? You might be waiting a while ❤️

sassyduck · 03/10/2023 15:23

Accidents happen. Please be kind to yourself.

momonpurpose · 03/10/2023 15:29

Op it's happened to us all in one way or another. Hey roll off the ved or bang into furniture. I'm so glad he's ok.

Ineedanewmoniker · 03/10/2023 15:34

My just 2 year old managed to injure himself in an empty house. We had just got the keys and walked in, the furniture hadn't arrived, he tripped over his own feet and launched himself into the side of a toilet (door had been left open). He had a huge black eye and we ended up in A&E and reported to the health visitor before we had even registered at a GP. I felt absolutely awful, but he was fine.

FUPAgirl · 03/10/2023 15:37

I am so glad he is ok OP. Don't be hard on yourself, it was an accident, we all have them! I promise we have all been there at some point!

CardboardHat · 03/10/2023 15:38

Well done for getting him checked. It’s the parents who don’t get their children checked that doctors and SS judge not the ones who go in. Happens to every parent dont worry OP

Lwrenagain · 03/10/2023 15:39

So glad he's okay @emlouba 💐

As a pp said, we've all got stories of similar! Go have a brew and calm down now, all is good x

Tryingandfailingagain · 03/10/2023 15:39

A&E. He needs checked by a paediatrician.

you’re not the first, and won’t be the last. Will be an awkward conversation but you need to take him to be checked over.
