Hello

I'm really worried as I dropped my newborn baby 5 weeks old as I was walking down stairs I had about 3/4 steps to go and he landed on our wooden floor! He cried his eyes out but I checked for any bumps or bruises but he has calmed down now and seems fine but should I get him checked?

I feel sick and so awful about it!! He's due for a nap so very tired but almost don't want him to sleep as just so worried I've hurt him 😭

Thanks
Emma

In years to come you will be able to wind him up and say it's because you dropped him on his head when he was a baby!!😛

Don't be so hard on yourself. Glad he's ok.

I had my newborn (stupidly) in their Moses basket on the floor. 4 year old was messing with a balloon and sat down hard on his head!!! They're 20 and in uni now so don't think it did any damage!!

Be prepared for some pretty intensive questioning. This happened to my sister when she fell downstairs with her newborn and hurt herself trying to protect the baby.

Lifeomars · 03/10/2023 17:19

So glad to read that he is ok, please be kind to yourself, we all have at least one tale to tell about accidents when our kids were small and not so small. I didn't realise my baby had learned to roll over, put them on my big bed, turned my back, heard a noise followed by a shriek and there they were flat on the floor. Luckily they landed on a thick soft carpet and were fine but I will never forget how shocked and guilty i felt. Hope you are feeling calmer now and can put this soen to experience

Glad all is OK xx Accidents happen, I remember my baby falling off the bed and I was mortified but she was fine. I always worry about stairs as I can imagine it is easily done to trip. My eldest also fallen downstairs when she was a toddler but again luckily she was fine.

Picklemeyellow · 03/10/2023 17:23

I did the same with ds when he was a newborn.
He was in his car seat and I lifted it up to pop it in one of those small shopping trollies and it slipped right out of my hand and it landed on the concrete with a huge thump, several people ran over to help and I felt like the worse mother in the world.
Took him to the doctors and my lovely GP told me she had fallen from the top of her stairs whilst carrying her newborn. I think you would be surprised just how many little mishaps happen with newborns but you did the best thing getting it checked.
My ds turned 18 the other day and no lasting damage done.

Viviennemary · 03/10/2023 17:33

A & E without a doubt. Needs to be checked

Thank you so much everyone! That worried me absolutely sick. He's fine thank goodness ♥️ we are fine to go back home! Honestly felt so awful, so thankful he's ok. Xx

Glad he is fine

You did the right thing in checking him out

Don't be so hard on self

So glad your little one is ok OP. Don’t be afraid or shocked if you get a call from your Health Visitor or GP as a follow up. It’s totally normal after something like this for a welfare check to take place - it happened to me and all I could think was, if they’re checking me out, hopefully they’re also checking out the kids who also need the support.

Hope you have a lovely evening

BashfulClam · 03/10/2023 17:53

Babies are quite bouncy little things. My older brother shoved me down the stairs in my pram, I was 4 days old. My dad then dropped me in a swimming pool at a few months old because I was really wriggly (my uncle said it was like trying to hold a salmon when he held me). I was fine. As others have said crying is a great sign that he’s actually ok, when they stay silent you worry.

Motherofchickenslol · 03/10/2023 17:59

A doctor who had my three week old baby swaddled in a blanket dropped her as he unwrapped her after cutting her tongue tie, he swears he caught her but I wasn’t so sure. We spent hours in A&E but long story short she was fine and touch wood I won’t need to sue the hospital or Dr in question. It was very frightening and I too felt sick with fear. The hospital still needed to report it to social services but obviously as it was out of our control no further action was required. A day I will never forget!

What again?

OP has been to A&E, her child has been checked over. All is well.

My son fell out of his cot , after climbing up, at age 12 months, straight onto floor, he screamed
it was 3am, I woke, jumped out of bed because it made my blood run cold
he was fine. Totally
i still have a very crocked and broken toe I got - as my leg was numb, and I buckled as I jumped out of bed, crashed to floor, and was screaming at my husband to reach child- through his snores
he dealt with baby, went back to bed (both of them) and I was still on floor crying with pain
🤣🤣🤣🤣
son is 30 now, I wiggle my broken crocked toe at him from time to time to remind him what I did for him as his mother 🤷🏼‍♀️

itsgettingweird · 03/10/2023 18:47

Glad they are ok.

These things happen. Luckily rarely!!! But you won't be the first or last parent to drop their child.

Be kind to yourself.

My ds did exactly the same thing at 15 months. Straight on his forehead.

In the middle of a tropical cyclone (we lived abroad) and a power cut.

He's 19 now and his knack of "perfect timing" hasn't changed 🤦‍♀️🤣

Clarich007 · 03/10/2023 18:50

On a summer holiday at the seaside. We were sitting with our backs to the sea wall The only seat available.
There was probably a 20 foot drop over the wall onto the beach below.
Tide was fully in.I was holding him.He was a year old.
He was giggling and doing that thing where babies bend their legs and sort of bounce up and down.
All was fine then suddenly he bounced nearly out of my arms, shot over my shoulder.I just managed to grab his nappy and pull him back..He would have been dead.
I felt so sick all afternoon and kept going over and over it in my mind.It was awful.
He's now 36 with his own 1 year old baby, yet I still
@remember it as if were yesterday.
So glad your little one is ok

You are most welcome Flowers

FeloniusGru · 03/10/2023 18:55

I’m glad he’s ok and that you feel reassured 🙂

I dropped one of mine out of bed in the middle of the night at about that age, and the other I dropped head first on a coffee table at about 2 weeks old 😱 was terrifying at the time but they were both fine and we laugh about it now.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind parents I got to the hospital now we are waiting to be seen, I just burst out crying as soon as I got there! I feel absolutely terrible, he seems ok but I'm glad I've came to get him checked xx god I feel so so sick - never am I carrying him down in his bed again!!

I carried my baby down in his Moses basket. One of the handles slipped and he rolled down a few stairs

i never did it again and he was fine

shivawn · 03/10/2023 19:04

Oh no I remember being constantly scared of dropping my son at that age! So glad he's okay and back home again.

Blanketpolicy · 03/10/2023 19:09

You wont be the first with an accident on the stairs with a newborn and you wont be the last so don't feel bad.

My SIL tried to carry sleeping dniece downstairs in her moses basket and it tipped and dniece fell out of it at the the top of the stairs and rolled right to the bottom. Also thankfully completely ok, always worth a check.

Glad everyone is ok.

Okaygoahead · 03/10/2023 19:11

Oh love, I know how you must be feeling, DS at 3 months had a nasty bump (DH fault, I'm only carrying a grudge 28 years later). Right as rain, graduated from a Master's degree last week. It's not recommended, mind, to drop them on their heads, but sometimes they do get through it.

WomanHereHear · 03/10/2023 19:14

Glad everything is ok. I hope you’re ok too, as mums we forget about ourselves don’t notice our own injuries

Friendofdennis · 03/10/2023 19:39

As people have said take him to A and E it happens to many mums. I slipped on the beach and dropped my baby on some rocks. She landed on her head. We went to hospital and had her checked and she was ok. But I felt awful too
