My washing never smells nice! What do you use?

I use persil bio liquid and comfort pure fabric conditioner. But I never get that ‘ahh these clothes smell so nice’ feeling.
they don’t smell unpleasant or anything and they are all clean but I want to be able to say oh that smells so nice!
any recommendations on what to use ? My kids don’t have sensitive skin or anything and are older now so feel I don’t have to stick with the gentle stuff

I used to use powder and my clothes were itchy and stiff also it didn't smell fresh, using a detergent before wash helped me also the scented liquid ones

Motherofwildlings · 12/08/2023 19:31

Oh god, I feel so awful because I know it’s so bad but surf or fairy washing powder and fairy conditioner and then the beads too, my favourite is lenor unstoppables, I have the fabreeze in the same range. If you get those little bags they put sugared almonds in and fill them with the beads then stick them in your draws/hang them in your wardrobe it helps keep the smell for even longer, or just shake them under draw liners if you have them.

Motherofwildlings · 12/08/2023 19:37

Forgot to mention, obvs clean the washing machine, but I live in a hard water area and find clothes smell a bit meh anyway, however when using a cold wash cycle it’s always a good idea to get the antibacterial stuff to chuck in so that all the foisty smells go. Fabulosa do few different ones, much cheaper than the brand. I am one of those who want their washing to smell amazing all the time, it feels very “adulty” 😂

You must not like the smell of freshly washed clothes 🤣

I like the smell of clean clothes that don't not sticking fabric conditioner 🤮🤢
clothes do not need fabric conditioner
it's actually up there with stinking of fags

@FatLarrysBanned how many washes would you say you get out of them? Duvet Day sounds right up my street!

Bottle says 24 washes.

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/08/2023 19:44

I think a very heavily fragranced laundry smell is over-rated and suggests your clothes haven't been rinsed properly.

Lidl Formil bio powder has a lovely gentle scent and powders are the best for keeping your machine clean.

If your clothes are smelling a little musty because they took too long to dry, then try Halo sports wash. It's anti-fungicidal and gets every last trace of mustiness and/or BO out of clothes.

I was recently in a holiday let and the towels gave off a strong laundry products scent but if you really held them close to your face and had a good deep sniff there was mildew underneath it all! Revolting! I would have complained but it was a friend of a friend's place.

Cottontail8 · 12/08/2023 19:52

The scent of freshly washed clothes is the scent when you take them in after line drying. My clothes smell amazing and fresh when I bring them in, but I’ve never used fabric conditioner in my life, I don’t see the point of it. There are so many people who suffer from migraines and scent sensitivity and it’s absolutely horrible for them to be on public transport/buildings with so many artificial and strong smells around, from air fresheners, perfumes, deodorants, washing powders etc.I don’t suffer from either of those things, but walking past people wearing jumpers smelling of fabric conditioner or walking into a charity shop smelling of strong washing powder/fabric conditioner makes me so nauseous and gives me a headache. For some people strong smells can set off a migraine for hours or days so we can all think about our use of heavily scented products (deodorants, perfume etc.) more carefully.

Drying my clothes outside doesn't make it smell nicer IMHO.

I just don’t understand, the difference is like night and day. Do you hang it out right away, early? It smells so nice.

Freshly washed clothes don’t need to have an artificial scent of fabric softener mingling in the air, actually makes me feel a bit queasy, clean & fresh doesn’t mean it has to smell 🤢

fullbloom87 · 12/08/2023 20:40

I just use loads of softener, much more then the recommended amount.

Mummytotheboy · 12/08/2023 20:44

I use fairy pods and no fabric softener and my washing smells really nice. I don't have a choice really as I get a slight irritation from most fabric softners and I'm not spending my money ever again on those bloody scent boosters that boost nothing! I tried persil non bio pods on their own and my washing smelt like wet dog!

Saammy · 12/08/2023 20:50

Don’t mean to blow my own trumpet here but my washing always smells unbelievable! I sell loads of my DD’s clothes on Vinted and people always message to ask what I use - I’m super sad I know but it always makes me buzz 😂
It’s taken a long time and lots of trialling to get the combo right (I’m so fussy and love great smells) but it’s definitely got to be Bold lavender & camomile liquitabs with either Lenor unstoppables (gold orchid or the dream ones) or comfort ultimate care coco fancy!

It's really bad for your clothes and washer though!

QueenOfHiraeth · 12/08/2023 21:26

My DIL uses Persil bio liquid and Comfort Pure which smells gorgeous but I struggle to get much fragrance on mine no matter what I use
I can't believe people use vinegar and say it smells fresh though. I tried it once and my washing had a nasty sharp tang to it - never again!

bakewellbride · 12/08/2023 22:05

Fairy in wash scent boosters and line dry whenever possible are my top 2 tips.

Nah, if I buy stuff on Vinted and it stinks of fabric softener I can’t get it in the wash quick enough.

Elly46 · 12/08/2023 22:34

I think fairy pods or non bio with the blue comfort pure comes out smelling strong and clean. I also use a little splash of laundry cleanser in the main and also conditioner drawers; the dettol one or shop own brand. Seems to keep any damp smell away too, especially from hubby’s gym/work clothes.

Saammy · 12/08/2023 22:37

Good for you but so it should regardless tbh!

I'm the same - bought a dress and it smelled so strong I had to hang it outside until I could get it washed!

Threenow · 12/08/2023 23:06

I think over time you just get used to the smell of any products you use and don't notice it any more. Line drying does makes clothes smell lovely and fresh - especially in a good breeze!

So I keep hearing - and yet my clothes last and last, and so do my washing machines.

Threenow · 12/08/2023 23:11

Forgot to say however that I don't like clothes which reek of fabric softener. I prefer a fresh, clean, scent.

EmptyTheFrickingBins · 11/08/2023 07:33

Fairy pods. They smell great even without softener!

Another one who uses these. The washing drying on the line smells lovely when I walk past.

fullbloom87 · 12/08/2023 23:14

@EmptyTheFrickingBins my washing machines going strong after 10 years and I rarely buy new clothes so all good here.

Threenow · 12/08/2023 23:22

Also use a hot wash when you can, it kills the bugs that multiply on clothes, and the bugs that produce smelly armpit odour.

Where I live many people wash in cold water. We don't have bugs on our clothes, or smelly armpits.
