I use persil bio liquid and comfort pure fabric conditioner. But I never get that ‘ahh these clothes smell so nice’ feeling.
they don’t smell unpleasant or anything and they are all clean but I want to be able to say oh that smells so nice!
any recommendations on what to use ? My kids don’t have sensitive skin or anything and are older now so feel I don’t have to stick with the gentle stuff

Eco egg and line dry and clean the washing machine regularly. Opposite to the poster above, I can’t bear it when you get something from eBay and it reeks of fabric softener! I like my clothes to smell of nothing.

IvyIvyIvy · 11/08/2023 08:37

Clean your washing machine thoroughly and hang your clothes outside. I don't use fabric conditioner and only use unscented ecover but the hanging outside in the fresh air is a must.

I'm not a big fan of over scented clothes. A friend gave some hand me downs for the kids and they smelt SO strong it's taken 3 washes to get rid of the (fresh and clean!) smell. She uses lots of fabric conditioner she said.

Mine smells lastingly fresh- but better, I think :)

I use Ecover and line dry. www.ecover.com/products/laundry/concentrated-bio-laundry-liquid/

Agreed!!
My SIL uses tons of softener and laundry sheets and her laundry smells so strong! I hate it!
I also use an eco laundry liquid and that's it. I also double rinse the clothes.

@FatLarrysBanned is it a subscription or can you just buy as you need?

I just buy as I need it. If I ever subscribe to anything I end up with stockpiles or running out. There's no middle ground. I'm sure more organised people can do it but not me.

UndercoverCop · 11/08/2023 08:43

Usually ecover liquid and softener, but I tried m&s eco range recently at it's much cheaper, it's really good! Smells lovely but not too strong. I've converted to their bathroom, shower and kitchen cleaners too rather than method

UndercoverCop · 11/08/2023 08:43

And yes line dry

ArianaGrande · 11/08/2023 08:45

@FatLarrysBanned thats good,I feel a bit weird about subscribing also. The packaging looks so unique.
I might try the sample of all of them.

We had this same issue and we’re advised on here to switch from liquid to powder. Have never looked back. Clothes smell amazing every time!

Elisheva · 11/08/2023 08:49

Which wash cycle do you use? My washing was coming out a bit meh and I switched to a longer cycle which has made a big difference to how fresh it smells.

SushiSuave · 11/08/2023 08:50

I want to add - I feel like my washing never smells that nice but we've just come away and when I opened my suitcase the washing smelt lovely! I wonder if I can't really smell it at home because the house smells of it?

This!
I use Aldi powder for whites & the separate one for colours. I think Aldi powder and probably other powders have something in it which helps keep machine clean.

I rarely use fabric softener which can turn a sour smell if you use it too heavily.

I always line dry outdoors or in the conservatory.
Changed the beds yesterday. They smell lovely.,

StarlightLady · 11/08/2023 08:51

I run a washing machine cleaner through my machine every month and rinse through the filter under the kitchen tap. You’d be surprised how much gunge (often fluff from socks) gets caught up in there.

(Dr Beckmann does the washing machine products.)

Have you tried changing brands? You might just be nose blind to the familiarity.

Utter facepalm!

Well, it would make them smell nicer!

Yes. Thanks, I meant that one :)

Takeabreather23 · 11/08/2023 09:01

I don’t use a lot of softener ( I’ve learned it’s better that way ) I use two fairy pods
fairy softener and a lot of the time I use the Lenor unstoppables (fresh) too

i love clean laundry smell

do you clean your filter out regular ?

SoupDragon · 11/08/2023 09:07

I rotate several bottles of softener so that I use a different one each time.

line drying makes me want to bury my nose in the laundry and breathe deeply though.

Sellingbedtime · 11/08/2023 09:08

I think any pods smell good! Maybe you have gone nose blind and need a completely different scent?

GetOurraMeWay · 11/08/2023 09:24

If clothes still smell strongly of detergent after they have been washed and dried, they have not been rinsed properly during the wash cycle.
Also liquid detergent will bung up your machine - use powder instead.
If you want your clothes to smell of something artificial then febreeze 'em!

TenderDandelions · 11/08/2023 09:50

I use Comfort Strawberry & Lily fabric softener. It smells lush.

I can't line dry and I don't have a tumble dryer, so all my washing is dried on airers and even after weeks of sitting in a drawer my clothes come out smelling beautiful.

StarlightLady · 11/08/2023 09:51

One afterthought after l pressed send. I’ve already mentioned regular filter cleans and washing machine cleaner. It’s also important to regularly remove and clean the drawer. Particularly if you use powder in the drawer.

SoupDragon · 11/08/2023 10:19

If you want your clothes to smell of something artificial then febreeze 'em!

do you use febreeze on yourself as opposed to scented soda/perfume/deodorant?

longtompot · 11/08/2023 10:47

Despite cleaning my machine it has decided it will no longer take fabric conditioner from the little dispenser. I use non bio washing powders, either Fairy or Persil usually and Fairy FC.
I have found some non bio washing liquid capsules with fc in, which I was very sceptical about, but it works! It's Persil 3 in 1 capsules and they really make the washing smell gorgeous, but not in an overpowering way. I also line dry.
I do wash towels, flannels and tea towels in non bio powder with no fc and I tumble dry those as my dd has fibro and finds line dried towels too uncomfortable for her skin.
Persil non bio 3 in 1

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/08/2023 11:02

I use the self clean function on the washing machine every couple of weeks.I use non bio gel and whichever fabric conditioner but the scent booster beads from any brand make a difference
